UNITED STATES WILLIAM EDWARD MARTIN, OF STAMFORD, ENGLAND.
ROTARY PUMP.
Application filed April 9,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM EDWARD MARTIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Rock House, Scot-gate, Stamford, in the county of Lincoln, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that type of rotary pump, air compressor and the like, having a fixed cylinder, a cylindrical piston of smaller diameter which is moved in an eccentric path around the interior wall of the cylinder, a slide pivoted to the piston and moving in a plane which passes diametrically through the fixed cylinder, suction and delivery ports in close proximity to the said slide and walls by which the slide is guided.
According to the present invention, a plurality of such pumps are arranged side by side in a single case divided from each other by a rotating diaphragm fixed with respect to the eccentrics and the driving shaft.
Upon the driving shaft are two end discs fitting the interior of the cylinder. Suitable means are provided for connecting the driving shaft, the end discs, the diaphragm and the eccentrics all rigidly together. According to the preferred embodiment of the invention one end disc is in contact with a shoulder on the driving shaft and the other disc is pressed tightly towards the said shoulder by means of a nut 011 the driving shaft.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a section taken 011 the line 83 showing a modified construction and showing, at one end, the cover for the piston slide broken away.
' Fig. 2 is asection on the lines 44:, 44, of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, a is a driving shaft having two eccentrics b b keyed thereon. c c are fixed and floating bushes surrounding the eccentrics. d (Z are the eccentric pistons mounted upon the bushes 0 0. e is the cylinder casing having a front cover 6 and a rear cover 6 A diaphragm is fixed with relation to the driving shaft 44 and as shown is formed integral with the eccentrics b b. g is a slide of the same width as the eccentric piston (Z and having a head mounted within 1924. Serial No. 705,359.
a suitable bearing in the eccentric piston (Z. h is a. suction port and Z1. a delivery port of the same length as the eccentric piston (Z. The two suction ports and two delivery ports are divided by a part c" of the cylinder 6. 2' is a wall dividing the suction and the delivery ports and formed. integral with the base of the pump. The slide 9 is kept in contact with the wall 2' by means of the wall 2' which is held in position by the bolt 2' passing through the distance collar 2' and screwing into a boss on the wall 2'. Each slide 9 is formed with a slot to pass over the distance collar hen the shaft (4 is driven it causes the pistons to move around the interior of the cylinder casing e and to rock upon the head 9 of the slide 9 in known manner.
The shaft a is provided with end discs j j The disc j is in contact with a shoul der in on the driving shaft a. The disc j is pressed towards its adjacent piston by means of a nut k which screws on to a thread formed on the driving shaft a. Each disc is turned down to form a shoulder 7' on its outer surface which. is in contact with the cylinder cover.
In this construction, as the end discs j, y' the eccentrics Z2 6 and the diaphragm f are all fixed with respect to the driving shaft (1. there will be equal and opposite end pressure against the diaphragm f and an end disc j or j as each piston (Z is delivering but no end pressure between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder as in known constructions.
The cover 6 is provided with a lubrieating device Z and the shaft a is bored. at a to convey the lubricant between the pistons d d, the bushes 0 0 and the slide 9 and its head 9 What I claim as my invention is 1. An improved rotary pump, air compressor and the like having in combination a driving shaft, a plurality of eccentrics keyed upon the driving shaft, a piston slidably mounted on each eccentric and moving in contact with the inner wall of the cylinder, a diaphragm dividing each pair of pistons and fixed with relation to the driving shaft, end discs upon the driving shaft between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder, a slide pivoted to each piston and moving on a plane which passes diametrically through the cylinder, a suction port on one side of each slide, a delivery port on the other side of eachslide, two walls dividing t the suction and delivery ports between which the slides are located, and means forrigidly connecting together the-end discs, diaphragm, eccentrics and shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved rotary pump, air compressor and the like having in combination a driving shaft, a plurality of eccentrics keyed uponthe 'driving shaft, a piston surrounding each eccentric and rotatingin contact with the inner wall of the cylinder, a diaphragm dividing each pair of pistons and fixed with relation tothe driving shaft, end discs upon the'driving shaft between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder, a slotted slide pivoted to'each piston andmoving on a plane which passes diametrically through the cylinder, a suction port on one side of each slide, a delivery port on the other side of each slide, two walls dividing the suction, and delivery ports between which the slides are located, distance collars separating the walls and bolts passing through each distance collar, substantially as set forth.
An improved rotary pump, air com pressor and the like having in combination a driving shaft, a plurality of eccentrics keyed upon the driving shaft, a piston surrounding each eccentric and rotating in contact with the inner wall of the cylinder, a
' diaphragm dividing each pair of pistons and fixed with relation to the driving shaft, end
discs upon the driving shaft between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder, a collar on the driving shaft against which one end 'disc abuts, a nut screwed on the driving shaft which is screwed against the other end :disc, a slotted slide pivoted to each piston andmoving on a planeqvhich passes=diametri cally through the cylinder, a suction port on one side of each slide, a delivery porton the other side of each slide,"twowallsadividing the suction and delivery: ports between which the slides are located, distance collars separating the walls. .andbolts passing. through each distance collar, substantially as set forth.
4. An improved rotary pump, air compressor and the like having in combination a driving shaft, a plurality of eccentrics keyed upon the driving shaft, a piston surrounding each eccentric and rotating in contact with the inner wall of the cylinder, a diaphragm dividing each pair of pistons and fixed with relation to the driving, shaft, end discs upon the driving shaft between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder, a
shoulder on the outer face of eachend disc, a slotted slide pivoted to each piston and moving on a plane which passes diametrically through the cylinder, a suction port on one side of each slide; a delivery port on the other side of each slide, two walls dividing the suction and delivery ports between which the slides are located, distance collars sepa rating the walls and boltspassingthrough each distance collar, substantially as set fortln An improved rotary pump, air coludiscs upon the driving shaft between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder, a shoulder on the outer face of each end disc, a collar on the driving shaft against which one end disc abuts, a. nut screwed on the driving shaft which is screwed against the 'pressor and the like having in combination a dr1v1ng shaft, a plurality of eccentrics other end disc, a slotted slide pivoted to each i piston and-moving on a plane which passes diametrically through the cylinder, a suction port onone side of each slide, a delivery port on the other side of each slide, two walls dividing the suction and delivery ports between which the slides are located, distance collars separating the walls and bolts :ipassi-ng through each distance collar, subistantially as set forth.
