EDGAR S. DOUGHTY, RED WING, MINNESOTA.
TOY cannon.
Application filed August 29, 1924.
[ '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR S. Douerrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Wing, in the county of Goodhue and State of ltiinnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Toy Cannon, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ectof this invention is to provide a compact and durable toy cannon adapted to be readily manipulated to impel a projectile with unusual accuracy. This invention also includes certain other novel features of construction, which will be pointed out in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the best form of my device at present known to me; Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved toy; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side view of a projectile for the same.
The cannon is supported upon a broad base l, carrying a pair of rigid standards 5. Pivotally supported upon pins 6 in ,the standards 5 is an arcuate body member 7 25 which carries a. cylindrical member 8. A barrel 9 projects from the periphery of the member 8, while a hollow, hemispherical member or bulb 10 of resilient material caps the member 8. Communicating with the interior of the bulb 10 is a passage 11 in the memberS which also connects with an axial bore 12 in the barrel 9. Projectiles tor the cannon are formed, as shown in Fig. 3, with a spindle 13 adapted to be inserted in the muzzle of the barrel 9 and a head 1% which forms an abutment for the muzzle when the spindle 13 is inserted in the bore. A handle 15, rigidly secured to the back of the arcuate member 7, is adapted to be manipulated to aim the cannon.
As will be readily understood, the cannon is loaded by inserting the'spindle 13 in the muzzle of the barrel 9 as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2. By manipulating the handle with one hand, the barrel may now be aimed at a suitable target. To discharge the projectile 14, the bulb 10 is depressed by a quick movement of the free hand to thereby expel the air through the passages 11 and 12 against the projectile.
Serial No. 734,964.
Operation of the device is greatly iacilitated by placing the bulb 10 directly above the pivotal support and in alignment with the handle 15 and barrel 9. By the formation of the projectile with the head 14, the possibility of jamming in the bore is precluded and the maximum effect of the air upon the projectile is secured. It will be noted the cannon is very compact and there are no parts which are liable to wear rapidly or get outof order.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is:
1. A toy cannon comprising a cylindrical body member, a. barrel projecting from the periphery of said member, a pivotal support for said member, and a hemispherical bulb of resilient material capping said body member, said body and barrel being formed with passages for air communicating with said bulb, and said bulb being adapted to be compressed to expel air through said passages.
2. A toy cannon comprising a body member, a barrel projecting from one side of said member, a support for said member and a resilient compression member formed to contain air and mounted on said body member, said barrel and body being formed with passages for air comiruinicating with the interior of said compression member. and said compression member being adapted to be depressed to expel air through said passages.
3. A toy cannon comprising a base plate having a pair of standards thereon, a cylindrical body tiltably mounted between said standards, a barrel fixed on the forward periphery of said body, said barrel and body being formed with passages for air, a resilient cap for said body member formed with an air chamber in communication with said passages, and a handle project-ing rearwardly from said body.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
EDGAR s. no oerrrr.
