UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
JESSE M. PER'ICLE, OF HUTCHINSON, MINNESOTA.
SNAP HOOK.
Application filed June 20,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Jnssn'lvl. PERICLE, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the county or' McLeod and State ot lsinnesota, have invented certain new and uselul improvements in Snap Hooks, or' which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a snap hook of great strength primarily intended for use by 'farmers for tethering cattle, particularly strong bulls, for which reason this hook may properly be known as a bull snap.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation and partial section ot tie device, and
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
1n the drawing, the reference numeral 10 represents one of the side bars and the ref-v erence numeral 11 the other side bar of the snap hook. These side bars are arranged in spaced parallel relation and are connected at one end by an arm 12. The side bar 11 is shorter than the side bar 10, the latter terminating in a hook 13 which is bent back in the plane ot the bars. At the end of the hook 13 is formed an enlarged head provided with a socket 14 facing the end of said other side bar 11.
A brace 15 firmly connects the end of the side bar 11 with the side bar 10. A longitudinal chamber 16 is formed in the side bar 11 adapted to receive and form a guide for a sliding bolt or plunger 17. The outer end of the sliding bolt normall7 projects beyond the end of the side bar 11 and engages in the socket 14 to be supported thereby. A coiled compression spring 18 is inserted in the chamber 16 back of the plunger or sliding bolt 17 and tends to push the latter into engagement with the socket 14. The space 19 between the ends of the hook and the side bar 11 is sufficiently wide, when open, to permit of the insertion of a stout rope or the link of a chain. The reference numeral 2O represents an eyelet or ring which has swiveled connection with the transverse arm 12.
The wall of the chamber 16 facing the side bar 10 is provided with a longitudinal slot 21, the rear end of which terminates in a notch 22. Through this slot projects a finger piece 23 which is secured to the slid- 1924. Serial No. 721,294.
ing bolt and by means ot' which said bolt may be retracted to open the hook. It it is desired to leave the space 19 open, the finger piece, after having been drawn all the way back, is swung into engagement with the notch '22. rilhis will retain the bolt in retracted position against theI action of the spring 18. A slight side pressure on the tinger piece will release the bolt 17 which will then be pushed forward by the spring 18.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A snap hook comprising a pair of parallel side bars, an arm forming a rigid connection between the said bars at one end thereof, a brace spaced from the arm and forming a rigid connection between the side bars near the other end thereof, a ring swivelcd on the arm between the side bars and projecting rearwardly from said arm, one of the side bars being provided with an overhanging hook terminating in an enlarged head, a. space being formed between the end of the hook and the end of the other side bar, and means adapted to close said space, said means including a spring actuatedl sliding` bolt arranged on the other side bar, a socket being provided in the enlarged head of the hook adapted to receive the end of the bolt.
2. A snap hook comprising a pair of parallel side bars one of which is hollow to provide a chamber, an arm forming a rigid connection between the side bars at one end thereof, a brace between the side bars, one of the side bars being provided with an integral overhanging hook terminating in an enlarged head, a space being formed between the end o1' the hook and the end of the hollow side bar, means adapted to closel said space, said means including a sliding bolt disposed within the chamber, a socket being formed in the enlarged head of the. hook adapted to receive the end of the bolt, a spring arranged in said chamber tending to hold the terminal ot' the bolt within the socket, and a finger-piece on the bolt extending through a slot provided in the hollow side bar, said finger-piece normally pointingin the direction of the hooked side bar and being normally housed between said side bars.
8. A snap hook comprising spaced parallel side bars one ot which is hollow to form a chamber, an arm forming a rigid connection between the side bars at one end thereof,` abrace spaced from the arm and forming a rigid connection between the side bars near the other end thereof, the other side bar being provided with an integral overhanging hook terminating in an enlarged head, a space being formed between the end of the hook and the hollow eide bar, a swivel eye carried by and extending rearwardly from the connecting arm between said Side loars,V
means adapted to close said space, said means including a sliding bolt arranged within the chamber of the hollow bar, there bolt, a'spring seated inV said chamber tendbeing a socket formed in the enlarged head of the hook adapted to receive the end of the 15 ing to hold the end of the bolt in Said socket, and a finger-piece on the bolt extending through a slot in the hollow bar, said fingerpiece normally extending in the direction of the hooked side bar and said slot having a notch adapted to receive the linger-piece'to hold the bolt in retracted position. Y In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
