No.152,067. Patentgdlpnexnan.
wnuissis: v wf/.MM5 fg ATTUBNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orr-10EI EDYVIN A. BROOKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORK-SOLE BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,067, dated June 16, 1874; application filed March 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, EDWIN A. BROOKS, of the city, count-y, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Cork-Sole Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view ot' a gaiter to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g part-s.
My invention has for its object to furnish improved cork-sole boots and shoes which shall prevent the heat from passing from the feet in winter and to the feet in summer, which will keep out the dampness, will be very light in comparison with the thickness ot' sole, and may be repaired with the same facility as ordinary boots and shoes. The invention consists in the upper, the inner and middle sole, the two layers of cork combined with each other and secured by two seams, and in the combination of the sole-leather band and its leather cover with the upper, the inner and middle sole, the two layers of cork, and the welt to which the sole is sewed, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the upper. B is the inner insole, to which the upper A is secured by a seam, C. D is the cork, which is made of two slabs, parts, or layers, which are placed the one above the other, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Making the cork in two parts or layers prevents the dampness from passing through,
however thin or thick the cork may be. E is a band of sole-leather, which is pasted around the edges ot' the cork D, and which is covered with a strip, F, of in'e'French calf-skin. The cover F and the upper edge ot' the sole-leather band E are sewed in with the upper A to the inner insole, B, as shown in Fig. 2. G is the middle sole, to which the upper A, the lower edge of the 'sole-leather band E, the cover F, and the welt H are sewcd by a second seam, I. The upper A i's taken up in both seams, which gives great lirmness and strength to the sole. J is the outer or main sole, which is sewed to the welt H by a third seam, `K, in the ordinary manner. f
This construction allows the sole to be repaired, or the boot or shoe to be resoled, with the same facility as an ordinary boot or shoe.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The upper A, the insole B, middle sole G, and the two layers ot" cork D, combined with each other, and secured by two seams, O I, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the sole-leather band E and the leather cover F with the upper A, the insole B, middle sole G, the two layers of cork D, and the welt l'l, to which the sole J is sewed, substantially as herein shown and described.
