Description

To all 10/ 10111 JOHN PETER FRANK, OF PAP'AIKOU, TERRITORY OF"HA'WAIII BUBETTEF- Application filed March 23, 1923. Serial No. 627,230.
it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN PETER FRANK,
a citizen of Papaikou, county of Hawaii,
have invented new and original Hawaii,
the United States, residing at Territory of lmproven'ients in Burettes, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to the design and manufacture all kinds of in laborator so that the said burettes of a burette which will permit fluids and chemicals to be used ies and manufacturing plants will protect the fluids and chemicals contained therein free from any dust, oxidation or other contamination,
and which may be drawn off through a stopcock fitted in person uslng the the lower end, and to permit the same to measure the amount drawn off by means of units of measurement indicated upon burette.
the side of the In ordinary burettes now in use, difficulty is had in filling, rendering it necessary to use a detached funnel.
Also with such burettes it is necessary to remove detached funnel from top of burette and replace same with a cork as a means of keeping the solution in the not in use.
burette free from dust, when As the cork or stopper must be again removed when the solution is drawn off, from the bottom of burette, considerable contamination of chemicals with foreign matter ensues, chemical solutlons and oxidation of takes place when using this ordinary burette.
To overcome these ob ect1ons and defects,
1 have therefore invented and designed a burette as shown in the single figure of the drawing, which is a side elevation, so that the same shall contaln an integral funnel bowl A at the top, tension of the hollow shaft a central vertical passage 0 use a detached which bowl will be an ex A of the burette, as to form a semi-globular or d openi lg, rendering it unnecfunnel for filling. below the attached funnel there al stop-cock C, provided with for the admission of fluids and chemicals to the hollow shaft 13, and
1 a a passage 0 ,for
of the burett stop-cock C i in shape,
or chemical.
an inclined vertically disposed the escape of air during filling the passages c and 0 being in Below the hollow shaft B, cylindrical s the and adapted for holding afiuid At the lower end of the hollow cylinder B is located a second stop-cock D which contains one transverse passage cl for draining off the fluid or chemical, said stopcock oeing made of the same material as the complete burette. Both the upper and lower stop-cocks are of the familiar design permitting the same to be turned with a handle at the side and removed for the purpose of cleaning. The upper stop-cock may be entirely removed, and, when so removed, a brush or other mechanical cleansing utensil can be inserted directly into the burette so as to come in contact with the inside walls of the cylinder, and thus facilitate cleansing.
I claim:
I 1. In a burette, in combination, a hollow shaft portion having graduations thereon, a funnel at the upper end thereof and having a vertical passage registering with the bore of the said shaft, a stop-cock having a transverse passage adapted to connect the passage between the funnel and the bore of the shaft, said stop-cock also provided with a second passage operably connected with the said bore and leading outside the container above the stop-cock to permit escape of air from the shaft when filling, and to prevent entrance of extraneous matter to said shaft when the aforesaid stopcock is in passive position, said stop-cock passages adapted to be simultaneously opened and closed, and means for discharging the contents of said shaft at its lower end.
2. In a burette, in combination, a container comprising a hollow shaft portion having graduations thereon, an integral filling funnel at the upper end of said hollow shaft and having a passageway registering with the bore of said shaft, a turning plug mounted in said shaft below the said fun nel, said turning plug having a transverse vertical passage therethrough in. register with the bore of the shaft and the outlet passage of the funnel, when the device is in filling position, said turning plug also being provided with a second transverse passage therethrough disposed obliquely to the vertical passage and adapted to communicate with the bore of the hollow shaft, and provide an air escape when said turning plug is in filling position, said second passags leading outside the container above the turning plug, the outlet end of the verllU tioal passage and the inlet end of the ten to; the bore of the hollow shaft, both oblique passage lying within the area of of said transverse passages adapted for the bore of the hollow shaftywhen in filling simultaneous opening and closing and a 10 position, the discharge end of said. oblique discharge stop-cock in the lower portion of 5 passage adapted to be blanked when the said shaft.
turning plug is in passive position, whereby to prevent entrance of extraneous mat- JOHN PETER FRANK.
