WAGON GEAR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE VVATSON WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bennington, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon Gears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vehicle frames, having reference more specifically to the construction of the connecting means between the running gear and the front bolster of light Wagon gears and has for an object to produce a form of swivel connection that effects a more permanent connection between the parts referred to.
The accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification illustrate in the different views a preferred form of my improvement which is herein described in detail, the invention however residing in the broader conception of the essential parts substantially as shown.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a childs vehicle to which an embodiment of my improvement is applied;
Fig. 2 is a partial plan View of the swivel mechanism; and
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same, partially in section, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Having reference to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a familiar four wheeled type of childs coaster wagon having a body 2 supported by spring members 3 front and back, the front member 3 being supported by a bolster piece 4 made of a small piece of channel iron which in turn is pivotally connected to the front axle 5 by means of the bolt that corresponds to and performs the functions of the king-pin in an ordinary wagon structure.
A channel bar 6 is secured in an inverted and these two parts together form the axle proper. A disc 22 is secured firmly to the upper face of the inverted channel at a point midway between the wheels, so as to move with the axle proper in all swivel movements. A similar disc is secured to the under face of the bolster channel 4 and in superimposed relation to and in contact with the disc 22. The bolt 10 is secured in any suitable manner to the axle rod 5 and inverted channel 6, passes upwardly through aligned apertures in the superimposed discs 20 and 22, through the bolster channel 4, and has a threaded free end.
A brace strap 16 which is secured to the body of the wagon extends downwardly over and rests upon the bolster channel 4. The pin 10 passes through an aperture in the brace 16, and a nut threaded upon the upper or free end of the pin 10 serves to clamp the brace to the bolster and the latter with its attached disc to the axle and its attached disc.
The upper end of the bolt 10 need only be threaded down to the level of the extension 16 or the top surface thereof, and has upon its threaded end the horizontal nut 25 which has a locking means comprising a plurality of radially disposed longitudinally cut notches 26 for the reception of a cotter pin 28, a hole 27 of substantially the same size as the width of the openings 26 having been provided in the bolt 10 at a predetermined height for the reception of the pin 28.
The position of the orifice 27 longitudinally considered, is such that it will contain the cotter pin 28 within the notches 26 of the nut 25 and the notches are of suflicient depth to permit a slight margin of adjustment of the nut to maintain in suitable relationship the extension 16 operably upon the bolster iece 4.
The discs 20 and 22 preferably have tongues 24 struck out therefrom and bent into embracing relation with the channels to which they are attached so as to assist in effecting a secure connection between each disc and its channel. The discs are also preferably provided with corresponding annular corrugations 21 and 23 which nest in one another and resist displacement of one laterally over F the face of the other.
Thus it will be seen I have provided simple, durable and effective means for connecting the front part of the body to the axle of a vehicle wherein the parts are rendered readi- 1y accessible, and easily detachable should the necessity arise for disconnecting the axle from the swivel mechanism, which results may be accomplished and the parts again returned to their normal arrangement and adjustment with accuracy and promptitude by the employment of my improved mechanism.
Having described my invention, What I claim is:

In a vehicle, a front axle rod, a rolled channel strip secured in an inverted position upon said rod, a stamped metal disc secured upon the upper face of the channel centrally thereof, a body part, a rolled channel strip carried by the body part, a stamped metal disc secured to the under face ofthe last named channel and r estingnpon the first named disc, and a pivot pin passing through both channels and discs for securing them together. a a V 2. 5. In a vehicle, a front axle rodya channel secured in an inverted position upon said rod, a sheet metal disc secured upon the upper face of the channel centrally thereof, a
body part, a channel carried by the body part; a sheet metal disc secured to the under face of the'last named channel and resting upon the first named disc,' :and :a pivot pin passing through both channels and disc for so curing them together and permitting relative rotation of, the discs, each disc'having struck out tongues embracing the channel to which it is secured in order to effect a more secure connectlon between them.
