ELECTRIC SWIVEL CONNECTION.

Be it known that I, BRUNO E. QUADRI, a subject of the King of Italy (who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and who is a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois), have'invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Swivel Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in electric swivel connections, and it eons'sts in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an electric swivel connection in which the opposite ends have universal movement with respect to each other.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be readily attached to an ordinary lighting fixture.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable and efiicient for the purpose intended, and which is not likely to easily get out of order. Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this appl cation, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, portions thereof being shown in elevation, 1

Figure 4 1s a side elevation of a portion of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a cap member 1 which is secured to a ring 2 by means of pins 3. The pins 3 are carried by the ring 2 and are received in bayonet slo'ts 4. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the ring 2 has an inwardly extending flange 5 at its lower end. A casing 6, having an outwardly extending flange 7 adjacent to the upper edge thereof, is rotatably carried by the ring 2. As clearly shown in the drawings, the flange 7 rests u on the flange 5 and is adapted to be rota with respect to the flange 5. The
casing 6 is provided with a circular plateshaped portion 8, through which a pin 9 is centrally disposed. A second circularshaped plate 10 is rotatably mounted on the pin 9 and abuts the plate 8. It will be noted from F gure 1 that the inner surface of the plate 10 is provided with teeth 11 which are disposed adjacent to the peripheral "edge of the plate. The plate 10 carries an integral stub pipe 12 to which a fixture or the like may be readily secured.
The plate 10 is adapted to be rotated with respect to the plate 8 and is frictionally held in adjusted position by means of spring pressed pins 13. In the present device, I
use two of these pins, but it is obvious that one or more-may be used without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. A housing 14 is carried by the plate 8 and encloses the pin 13. The pin 13 has a shoulder 15 wh ch slidably engages with the inner wall of the housing 14. A compression spring 16 is disposed within the housing 14 and bears against the end wall of the housing 14 and against the shoulder 15. The
outer end of the pin 13 is provided with a point 17 which is adapted to enter any one of the teeth 11. From this construction it will be apparent that the pin 13 is yieldingly held in engagement with the teeth 11. The pins 13 are strong enough to normally hold the plate 10 against rotative movement with respect to the plate 8, but permit the plate 10 to be manually swung with respect to the plate-8.
Electrical wires 18 and 19 lead from the 1 that the terminals 21 and 22 are in electrical connection with conducting rings 23 and 24, respectively, (see Figure 2). These rings are disposed in annular grooves 25 and 26. The terminals 21 and 22 are carried by an insulating block 27. The block 27 is carried by the ring 2.
An insulating block 28 is carried by the casing 6 and supports conducting pins 29 and 30. These pins are slidably carried by the block 28 and are yieldingly held in the grooves 25 and 26 by leaf springs 31 and 32. The springs 31 and 32 are in turn secured to the block 28 by screws 33 and 34, the screws in turn acting as the terminals for wires 35 and 36, respectively. The wires 35 and 36 pass out through the opening 37 in the casing 6 and into the opening 38 in the pipe portion 12. In this manner, the plate 10 may be rotated with respect to the plate 8 without damaging thenoted that the casing 6 is first disposed with-' in the ring 2 before the cap 1 is secured to the ring. The wires 18 and 19 are connected to the terminals 21 and 22, and the wires 35 and 36 are connected to the terminals 33 and 34:, whereby an electrical connection is established between the wires 18 and 19 and the wires 35 and 36. The pins 29 and '30 are yieldingly held in engagement with the rings 23 and 24, and therefore provide a good connection between the inlet wires and the outlet wires, no matter in what position the casing 6 may be rotated with respect to the cap 1. From this construction it will be apparent that the casing 6 may be rotated into any position with respect to the cap 1. A still further movement is provided by the plate 10. As clearly shown in the drawings, this ,plate may be rotated in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the casing-6. This construction provides a universal movement of the pipe 12 with respect to the cap 1. In other words, with a connection 1 of this type, the fixture secured to the pipe 12 may be disposed in any angular relation with respect to the pipe 20 without damaging the wires in any way, or hindering the electrical connection between the inlet and the outlet wires. As heretofore stated, the spring pressed pins 13'are strong enough to hold the pipe 12 in adjusted position, but still permit the pipe to be swung with res'pect to the casing 6. The device consists of a minimum number ofparts and is relatively inexpensive to manufacture. The device is simple in construction and may be readily attached to any ordinary. electric fixture outlet pipe.
I claim:
1. A device of the type described comprising two members, means rotatably securing said members to each other, an insulating disc carried by one of said members, conducting Jrings carried by said disc, 2. second insulating disc carried by the other member, spring pressed terminals carried by said second disc and being in electrical connection with said rings, a .wire carrying pipe pivotally secured to said second named member, and means for yieldingly holding said pipe in adjusted position.
2. A device of the type described comprising two members, means rotatably securing sald members to each other, an insulating disc carried by one of said members, conducting rings carried by said disc, a second insulatng disc carried by the other member, spring pressed terminals carried by said second disc and being in electrical connec- -tion with said rings, a wire carrying pipe pivotally secured to said second named member,v and means for yieldingly holding said pipein adjusted position, said means comprising spring pressed pins carried by said second named member and being adapted to operatively engage with said pipe.
3. An electric swivel connection compris ing a body portion adapted to be secured to a fixed support, two rings carried by said body and being insulated from each other and from the body, said rings being in electrical connection with wires, a casing having a flange, asecond flange carried by said body and enclosing said first named flange, whereby said casing is adapted to be rotated with respect to said body, spring pressed terminals carried by said casing and being insulated therefrom, said terminals contacting with said rings, a pipe pivotally secured to said casing, and spring pressed pins for yieldingly holding said pipe in adjusted position.
