Description

@gem Z3, W2@n LSZJW A EKMAN l l HINGE Filed July 21, -1924 Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
ANDREW EKMAN, F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO- GRAND RAPIDS :BRASS COMPANY, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
Application filed July 21, 1924. Serial No. 727,117.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW EKMAN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan` have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to hinges, particularly such as are employed in mounting refrigerator doors; and its object is to provide an improved hinge of that character having inwardly extending flanges; and further, to provide such a hinge having in such fianges portions extending outwardly coaxially with the hinges pintle and covering the ends thereofthus simulating in appearance a hinge having a much thicker body portion.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds a preferable embodiment in, the hinge hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a hinge secured to the members-i. e., the swinging or valve member and the ixed or jamb member-of a door;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same, the door members being shown in section on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the middle part of the hinge taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the hinge taken on the same sectioning line, but showing the tongues of the leaves in the positions they assume before beingv bent around the hinge pintle; and
Figure 5 is a face view of the middle part of the hinge, the tongues and part of. the flanges of the leaves being shown in section on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
The hinge illustrated by the drawings comprises a pair of leaves, 1 11, mounted on the two members of .a door as by screws 2, the leaf 1 being thus mounted on the swinging member 3 and the leaf 11 on the fixed or jamb member 31 of the door. These `flanges 71.
leaves are swingably connected by the pintle 4, the tongues 5 and 51 of the leaves 1 and 11 respectively being bent, from the position seen in Figure 4 in which they receive the pintle, to the position shown in the other views, particularly in Figure 3,in which they surround the pintle. These leaves are provided at their side edges with flanges 7, 71
extending toward the swmging door mem-V ber 3 and formed continuously with the These flanges 11 haverounded portions 12 extending outwardly and coaxially with the pintle and covering its ends, as particularly shown in Figure 5.
It will be seen that the various flanges, particularly the flanges 11 of the outwardly extending portion 10 of the leaf 11, and the rounded outward projections 12 simulate a hinge whose leaves have thicker .bodies than those shown in the drawings and which has a pintle whose ends are exposed to view.
I claim:
1. In a door hinge: a pair of pintle-connected leaves secured to the door members respectively, one of the leaves having a body portion disposed parallel with the door member to which it is secured and a portion extending outwardly from said door member and -provided'with flanges at its side edges extending toward the other door member.
2. In a door hinge: a pair of pintle-connectedv leaves secured to the door members respectively and provided with flanges at their side edges and free-end edges extendin'g inwardly toward the door members respectively, one of the leaves having a portion extending outwardly from the door member to which it is secured and provided with anges at its side edges continuous with its said side-edge flanges and extending toward the other door` member.
3. In a door hinge: a pintle; a pair o 5 leaves having tongues bent around the pintle, one of the leaves being provided with flanges at its side edges extending inwardly toward'the door member to which. Said leaf is secured said flanges having portions extending outwardly coaxially with the pintle and covering its ends.
lin testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 17th day of July, 1924.
ANDREW lEKMAN.
