Description

33""259 0 OR 1 Q 5 19 9 865 Jv MAHLICH RIFLE SIGHT Filed 001;- 12, 1922 Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
NITED STATES JOSEPH R. MAHLICH, 0F STANTON, MICHIGAN.
1 RIFLE SIGHT.
Application filed October 12, 1922. Serial No. 594,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Josnrrr R. MAHLICH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stanton, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, has invented new and useful Improvements in Rifle Sights, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a readily applicable and adjustable rear rifle sight of the crossed-hair type which may be adjusted by a touch of the finger of the hand which grasps the rifle barrel; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of a sight embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a rifle barrel.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the adjusting cam and operating lever detached.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view of the device in the plane of the attaching clamp.
Figure 6 is an inverted plan view of that end of the device which carries the attaching clamp.
Figure 7 is a detail view of the wire carrying sleeve detached.
Figure 8 is an elevational view of the eye constituting the peep opening.
The device consists essentially of a resilient plate or tongue 10 provided at one end with a clamp 11 for attachment tothe rifle barrel 12 and at the other end with an eye 13 constituting a peep opening which may be equipped with crossed wires or hairs 14 by the introduction of a sleeve 15 carrying said wires or hairs and which is adapted to be slipped into place and held frictionally. The sleeve is peripherally notched as indicated at 16 to form seats for the ends of the wires which obviously may be of any preferred gauge to suit the convenience and preference of the marksman, and may be readily arranged from time to time for a similar use.
In the construction illustrated the clamp consists of lateral bearing cars 17 for contact with the upper surface of the rifle barrel and an elliptical cam 18 carried by a swivel screw 19 mounted in the plate or tongue, said cam being adapted to extend into the sight groove 20 so that upon the turning of the swivel screw the cam is brought into engagement with the walls of the groove to lock the sight in position on the rifle barrel.
Also at its forward end near the sight eye the plate or tongue is provided with a slot 21 through which operates a lifting arm 22 carried by a cross spindle 23 mounted in bearing ears 24 rising from the said plate or tongue, and attached to one end of the said spindle is an operating lever 24, preferably provided with a squared opening 25 for engaging a squared terminal of said spindle, and held in place by the spreading or swaging of the latter, to serve as a con venient means for actuating the lifting arm to vary the position of the sight eye to suit different ranges. The operating lever preferably extends forwardly from the spindle carrying the elevating arm to operate in connection with a ratchet 26 on the side of the sight eye, said lever being transversely resilient and having a tooth 27 to engage the ratchet so as to lock the elevating arm in adjusted positions. The extremity of the operating lever is provided with a finger hold 28 and by pressure thereon in one direction or another by the finger of a hand grasping the rifle barrel, a quick and accurate adjustment in the elevation of the rear sight can be effected to agree with the estimated range of the shot which the marksman proposes to make.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A rear sight for a fire arm having a barrel, the same comprising resilient plate or tongue provided with means for attachment to the barrel and having a terminal ring forming a sight eye, an eye elevating finger pivotally mounted upon the plate or tongue for terminal contact with the barrel, and means for moving the said finger to vary the position of the sight eye with relation to the bore of the barrel.
2. A rear sight for a fire arm having a barrel, the same comprising resilient plate or tongue provided with means for attachment to the barrel and having a terminal ring forming a sight eye, said eye being provided with a ratchet at the side, an eye elevating finger pivotally mounted upon the plate or tongue for terminal contact with the barrel, and means for moving the said finger to vary the position of the sight eye with relation to the bore of the barrel, and consisting of an operating lever operating in cooperative relation, with the ratchet.
3. A rear sight for a fire arm havin a barrel, the same comprising resilient plate or tongue provided with means for attachment to the barrel and having a terminal ring forming a sight eye, an eye elevating finger pivotally mounted upon the plate or tongue for terminal contact with the barrel, and means for moving the said finger to vary the position of the sight eye with relation to the bore of the barrel, the elevating finger being carried by a spindle mounted in bearing ears on said plate or tongue, and the operating means for the same consisting of a finger lever attached to said spindle and having a terminal fingerhold for actua tion by the finger of a hand grasping the barrel of the sight fire arm.
4. A rear sight for a fire arm havin a barrel, the same comprising resilient plate or tongue provided with means for attachment to the barrel and having a terminal ring forming a sight eye, an eye elevating finger pivotally mounted upon the plate or tongue for terminal contact with the barrel, and means for moving the said finger to vary the position of the sight eye with relation to the bore of the barrel, the' barrel having side positioning grooves and said attaching means consisting of laterally extending bearing ears and a cam for engagement with the sight grooves and having a swivel screw mounted in said plate or tongue for actuation from the upper side thereof.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
