To all may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN \V. Gonssn and VILLIAM DfDAvinsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in
i the county of Los 'Angeles and State of 2 for the-highest driving speed for the drum and in order toobtain a third speed, that is, the highest speed used, it has been necessary to drive the engine at an excessively higli speed. The general oh- I ject of this invention is to provide a simple construction applicable to the draw works mechanism as now used and without necessitating an increase in its length, but which will adapt the same for developing three driving speeds for the drum with one engine speed. 7
Further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the novel parts and combination of parts to be described hereinafter, all of which contribute to produce an ellicient three speed rotary draw works.
A preferred embodiment. of the invention is described in the following specification while the broad scope of the invention is pointed out in the appended claims.

I Th'e'rot'ary draw works mechanism coinprises a. drum shaft carrying a drum opv osite to which there is mounted a riving shaft. In applying our invention, We provide a low speed driving connection between the shafts including a member rigid on one of the shafts and a loose member on' the other, with a clutch. for driving through the low-speed connection at will; we also provide an intermediate-speed driving connection between'the shafts including a member rigid on one of the shafts and a# loose member on the other shaft, with its corresponding clutch for driving through the intermediate speed at will; we also pro vide a high speed driving connection between the shafts including a member rigid on one of the shafts and a loose member on the other shaft with its corresponding clutch for driving through the high speed connec tion, and we provide-means corresponding to each clutch for operating the'same independently.
;\Ve shall .now describe this mechanism more in detail, and refer to the drawing in which 1 represents a drum shaft carrying'a drum 2 rigidly keyed to it, said shaft being mounted on bearings supported on' three posts, comprisingtwo end posts 3 and 4 and an intermediate post 5. In the upper part of the. frame a line shaft or driving shaft 6 is rotatably supported, and between these shafts 6 and 1 we provide three driving connections, any one of which may be em loyed at will to drive the drum shaft. n the driving shaft we provide a rigid low speed driving member which may be in the form of a driving sprocket wheel 7 wln'ch is connected by a sprocket chain 8 with an alining low speed sprocket wheel 9 which is loose on the shaft l and which is rovided with its own clutch 10 adapted to e opened and closed at will by means .of a lever 11. This sprocket wheel 13 is in alinement with a driving sprocket wheel 14 on the shaft 6 and is driven from it by a sprocket chain 15. The movable member 16 of the clutch 12 may be shifted at will by means of a lever 17 fulcrumed at 18 and actuated bya foot lever 19 at the left of the frame. Where a two speed rotary draw worksis transformed in this way the shaft 6 will have a key slot just to the left of the post 5 at square jawwhich the loose sprocket wheel 23 must be placed. As the slot in the shaft at this point isa disadvantage, we provide bushin -s this point which provide continuous cylindrical surfaces or hearing contacts for the hub of the sprocket wheel. It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described herein is only one of the many embodiments this invention may take and we do not wish to be limited in the practice of our invention nor in our claims to the particular embodiment set forth;

In a rotary drawworks mechanism, the combination of a frame having end posts and an intermediate post, a drum-shaft, a drum carried thereby with one end disposed adjacent to the intermediate post, a driveshaft mounted on the frame parallel with the drum-shaft, a low speed drlving connection and its clutch located between one end of the drum and one of said end posts, an intermediate speed driving connection and its clutch located between the intermediate post and the other end post, and a high speed driviii'g connection including a driven sprocket on the drum-shaft between the intermediate post andthe adjacent -end of the drum and a drive sprocket aligned relative thereto on the drive shaft, and a clutch on the drive shaft for said drive sprocket.
