G. CLAUSING MECHANISM FOR FORMING HINGES OF LASTS FOR SHOES Original Filed June 6 1,925
til
Fatented Dec. l
PATENT GEORGE CLAUSING, 0F PORTSMOUF'H, GHIO, ASSIGNOB TO THE VULOAN LAST COEF- EANY, OF PORTSMOUTH. OHIO, A. COEEUBATION OF OHIO.
MECHANISM FOR FORMIIFG Original application filed June 6, 1923, Serial To all to hour it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen CLAUSING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Forming Hinges of Lasts for Shoes, of which the fol owing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to mechanism for forming the hinges of lasts for shoes and is a division of my application for patent filed June 6, 1923, Ser. No. 643,609.
It is the object of this invention to provide mechanism for performing the last operation in the making of the hinge portions of a wooden last, which lasts are used for the purpose of manufacturing shoes.
It will be understood that such hinges must be formed with great accuracy by severing the last body at predetermined angles and curves.
It is the particular object of this invention to provide a mechanism which will accurately efiiect the last operation in the making of a hinge last, namely, severing the last after the V-shaped portion has been removed and the semi-circular hinge out therein.
It is a further object to provide such a mechanism which will duplicate the same operation in the same way repeatedly, so that there will be uniformity in the product resulting from the use of my mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the mechanism comprising my invention, whereby the two portions of the last are severed from one another after the hinge has been formed.
Figure 2 is an elevation showing a last with the V-sha-ped portion removed and the semi-circular hinge cut therein.
Figure 8 is an elevation of a last after the bottom portion has been severed, thus forming the last in two separate parts.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 designates a table, having a slot 2, adapted to receive a saw 3. A block 4 is pivotally mounted on the table 1 by a link 5, which is connected to the table at 6 and to a block 7.
This block 4 has at its outer end a cutaway portion substantially U-shaped, as shown at 8 to accommodate the saw. Mounted upon HINGES OF LASTS FOB SHOES.
No. 643,609. Divided and this application filed March 17, Serial No. 699,682.
the block l adjacent to this cutaway portion 8 is a plate 9 having a pin 10. This plate 9 is adjustable on the block 4 through a bolt 11 carried by the block 4:, which works in a slot 12 in the plate 9. A nut 13 serves to locate the plate 9 on the block 4E at predetermined positions as will presently appear.
Also mounted on the block l adjacent the U-shaped portion is a pin 14. This pin and the pin 10 mounted on the plate 9 are adapted to project into the halves of the last and hold the same during the cutting operation. The pin 10 may be adjusted relatively to the pin ll to position the last, so that it will be properly cut by the saw 3.
The block 4 is limited in its movements on the table 1 by a stop 15. Thus it will be seen that by moving the block 4 and the last mounted thereon against the saw 3 the last will be cut as shown at 16 in Figure 3, to sever the last into two parts.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a last ready to receive the operation by the mechanism here described and in Fig. 3 such last after cut, as above stated. 17 designates the toe portion, 18 the heel, 19 the base of the cutaway V-shaped portion and 20 the semi-circular hinge.
I desire to comprehend Within my inven tion such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine for working upon a last, a table, a saw operating in a slot therein, a swinging block pivotally mounted thereon, a stop for limiting the movement of. said block, said block having a cut-away portion for receiving said saw, pins located on either side of said cut-away portion on the block adapted to project into apertures in a last mounted thereon, said last being arranged to span a portion of the cutaway portion of the block, whereby the last may be severed to the extent desired, without the saw coming in contact with the block.
2. In a machine of the character described, a table having a slot, a saw adapted to operate in said slot, a swinging block pivotally mounted on said table, a stop for limiting the movement of said block, said block ha ing a cutaway portion for receiving said saw, pins located on either side of said ing a cutaway portion for receiving said saw,
a pin on said block adjacent said cutaway portion, a plate carrying a pin and adjust ably mounted on said block, said pins being arranged to receive a member to be sawed.
In testimony whereof, I alfix my signature.
GEORGE CLAUSING.
