JAMES a. norinv, or New "ironic, n. Y.
IOOT-IE'EDAL LIFT FOR VEHICLE JACKS.
hpi l ie eition riled Ot'tobr 12, 3921. serial in. 507,172.
Toall whom "it may concern V jBe it known that I, JAMES G. NoLEN, a citizen of the United States, residingin New York, inthe county of New York and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Pedal Lifts for Vehicle Jacks, of which the following is a specification. F p a 7 My present invention relates to vehicle jacks and more particularly to a pedal lift for, vehicle jacks, and one object of my invention is to provide a pedal lift which is removable from the j ack when not inuse, for convenience in stowing the jack and lift.
.Another object is to provide a lift of this character in which the leg of the operator, in causing the up-stroke or upward movement of the lift to position for down-stroke is assisted by the use of the arm of the operator.
Another object is to provide a lift of this character in which the leg of the operator in causing the rip-stroke of the lift is assisted by the pullor strain of a spring co-operating between the jack and the lift.
Another object is to provide a lift .-of this character in whiclrthe leg of the operator in causing the up-stroke ofthe liftis assisted by the use of the arm of the operator and a spring such asfmentioned w Another object is to provide a. lift of, this character which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture. In the accompanying drai vings which form part of this specification Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of my invention, inassociation with avehicle jack, and showing in outline the foot of the operator inserted in the lift.
Figure 2, is a fra mentary side view of another embodiment of my invention. Referring to Fig. 1, my invention comprises a lift member or bar 10 of metal and of suitable thickness, and preferably cast one end of the lift bar being tapered as at 11 for insertion in the tapered socket 12 of the lever member 13 of the jack J the socket 12 preferably having thereon a bead 14 with which a stop collar 15 on the lift 10 engages, but this head and stop collar are not essential to my invention.
The outer or free end of the lift bar 10 is enlarged and bifurcated to provide the mouth 16 for reception of the foot of the operator.
The upper jaw of the mouth 16 has an or insertible end with the boss or projection to. which the eye 22 is secured, the boss or projection being cast on or integral with the liftlO. I One end of the spring 23 is secured tosaid eye the other end of the spring being removaloly connected to the hook 2 1- secured to the bracket 25 on the jack J, the spring 23 being strained between the eye 22 and the hook 2 1 and tending to raise the lift bar 10 to position for operative down stroke, V
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the lift member 26. is a straight rod or bar having a tapered end such as 11, not shown in Fig. 2 but readily understood. The lift bar 26 has a collar 27, removably secured thereto provided with an eye 28 for one end of, the spring The free end 30 of the lift bar28 is straight and near its termination hassecured thereto the upper jaw member 31 by ineans of the collar portion 32 of this aw member. The jaw member 81 has an aperture therethrough for attachment of the free-hanging rod 3 1 to the jaw member, the mouth 35 for reception of the foot of the operator being provided between the opposed surfaces of the end 30 of the lift bar 26 and the aw member 31. p In operation: The tapered end 11 of the lift bar 10 or the lift bar 26, as the case may be, is inserted in the tapered socket 12 of the lever meml'ier of the ack J, the springs 23 or 29 being connected at the free end of the respective springs tothe eye 24:. The foot of the operator is inserted in the mouth 16 or 35 as the case may be. and the lift bar 10 or 26 being in position for down stroke, downward pressure of the foot is applied to the lower jaw of the mouth of the lift bar whereby the jack J is elevated. The lift bar 10 or 26 is returned to position for operative down stroke by raising or pulling upward the foot of the operator by leg power while the foot is engaged in the mouth 16 or 35. as the case may be, this action being assisted by the upward strain of the spring 23 or 29, and if desirable or necessary by upward arm pull on the rod 18 or 34, the tapered end 12 of the lift bar or 26 being held in the socket 13 by frictional contact and also by inward pressure of the foot of the operator in the mouth 16 or and the upward and inward pull of the spring 23 or 29. Any apparent disadvantage of the up pull or strain of the spring 23 or 29 against the downward pressure of the foot is compensated for by the assistance afforded by the spring to the leg of the operator in raising the lift to position for down stroke, as this raising action by the leg is more trying on the muscles of the leg than the down stroke when the weight of the body may be added to the downward pressure of the leg and if necessary the rod 18 or 34 may be maintained in rigid position and pressed downwardly by the arm for further assisting the leg in downward pressure, the primary purpose of the rod, however, being to assist the foot and consequently the leg in raising the lift member.
Having thus described my invention, it
' should be understood that there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended. claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a jack having means for elevating the jack to operative supporting position, of a lift member arranged at one end for removable connection to said means for co-operating therewith and having at its opposite end a member provided with an upper jaw and a lower aw for receiving the foot of an operator between the jaws for raising or depressing the lift by lifting upwardly or pressing downwardly the foot of the operator without removal of the foot from between the jaws.
2. The combination wlth a ack having means for elevating the ack to operat1ve supporting position, of. a lift member arranged at one end for removable connection to said means for co-operating therewith and having at its opposite end a member provided Wl'll an upper aw and a lower ,jawfor receiving the foot of an operator between the jaws for raising or depressing the lift by lifting upwardly or pressmg downwardly the foot of the operator without removal of tl e' foot from between the jaws, said upper jaw on its under side conforming substantially to the. shape of the toe and instep of the foot for raising the lift and said lower jaw on its upper side providing a pressure surface for the sole of the foot for depressing the lift.
3. The combination with a jack having means for elevating the jack to operative supporting position and asocket'co-operating with said means, of a lift member insertible at one end in said socket and having at its opposite end a member provided with an upper aw and a lower for receiving the foot of an operator between the jaws for raising or depressing the lift by lifting upwardly or pressing downwardly the foot of the operator without removal of the foot from between the jaws, said upper jaw on its under side conforming substantiallyto the shape of the toe and instep of the foot of the operator for raising the lift and said lower jaw on its upper side providing a pressure surface for the sole of the foot for depressing the lift.
The combination with a jack having means for elevating the jack to operative supporting position and a socket co-operating with said means of a lift member insertible at one end in said socket and having ,at its opposite end a member provided with an upper and a lower jaw for receiving the foot of an operator between the jaws for raising or depressing the lift by lifting upwardly or pressing downwardly the foot of the operator without removal of the foot from between the j aws, and a rod connected at its lower end to the upper side of the upper jaw for lateral movement of the rod and permitting downward pressure of the rod on the upper side of said jaw and pro vided at its upper end with a hand grip for pulling the rod upwardly, said upper jaw on its under side conforming -substantially to the shape of the toe and instep of the foot for raising the lift and said lower jaw on its upper side providing a pressure surface for the sole of the foot for de pressing the lift.
