Description

c. BALKO FOUNTAI N COMB Filed Oct.
' Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
' 1 UNITED STATES CHARLES BALKO, OF VAN METER, PENNSYLVANIA.
'roun'rnm coma.
Application filed October 4, 1924. Serial No. 741,620.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BALKO, a citizen of the United Stat/es, residing at Van Meter, in thecounty of West'moreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fountain combs and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character comprising novel and im-' proved means whereby the same can be employed in the treatment of hair as by applying tonic or the like at the time the hair is being combed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character comrisin novel and im roved means whereb P n the flow of the tonic or the like may be closed when the comb is not in use.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fountain comb whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order-that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a foun tain comb constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation'of the device as herein disclosed;
Figure 4c is a transverse sectional view taken through the comb as herein disclosed;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view illustrating the valve member or spring in a closed position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated tubular member serving as a reservoir for the tonic or the like to be applied to the hair. One end portion of the member 1 constitutes a handle and the closed end 2 thereof is provided with a filling opening 3 normally closed by the plug 4 or the like.-. The opposite end portion of the comb is provided alon its inner longitudinal margin with the ri or flange 5 having disposed longitudinally therethrough a bore 6 in which is slidably disposed the elongated valve member or spring 7.
Extending outwardly from this rib or flange 5 are the teeth 8. Disposed through the flange or rib 5 at points between adjacent teeth 8 are the openings 9, said openlngs being in communication with the reservoir 1 and discharging between the teeth 8. These openings are intersected by the bore 6 so that when the valve member or spring fl 1S-1I1 one position flow through the openings is closed. The member or spring 7 at points longitudinally thereof is provided with the openings 10 which, when the memher or spring 7 is in a second position, register with the openings 9 so that the tonic or the like within the reservoir 1 ma be readily discharged between the teeth 8:
The inner end portion of the member or spring 7 is provided with an enlargement or head 11 while the oxpfiosite end portion is threaded, as at 12. en the member or spring 7 is in its closed position, the threaded end portion 12 extends beyond the outer teeth 8 with the head or enlargement 11 in substantially close contact with the inner tooth 8 so that upon proper manipulation of the holding nut 14. engaged with the threaded endportion 12 of the member or spring 7 said member or spring will be efiectively held in its closed position whereby flow of the tonic from the reservoir out through the openings 9 is efi'ectively closed.
As is believed to be clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it is to be noted however that the member or spring 7 is of a such a length that the holding nut '14: may
constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and fecility wit which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the princi les and spirit thereof and for this reason do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out m invention in practice 63- ce t as hereina ter claimed.
claim A fountain comb comprising a member constituting a reservoir, an outstanding rib extending along a face of the reservoir and rovided with outstanding teeth, said rib having openings extending there/through communicating with the reservoir and discharging between the teeth said rib having an opening disposed longitudlnally therethrou h, an elongated valve member slidab y disposed through the bore of the rib and of a length to extend beyond the opposite ends of t e rib, said valve member being provided with openings registering with the first named openings when said valve member is in one position, said valve memher when in a second position closing flow throu h the first named openings, an extende end portion of the valve member being provided with an enlargement, and a holding member threaded upon the opposite extended portion of the valve member, said holding member when in one position permitting endwise movement of the valve member to permit the openings in the valve member to be brought into register with the first named openings, said holding member being adapted when 1n a second position to coast with the enlargement at the o posite end of the Valve member to hold sai valve member against movement when in closed position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
CHARLES BALKO.
