UNITED lSTATES WILLIAM RFCHYNOWETH, 0F BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
BRUSH.
Application filed August 7, 1922. Serial No. 580,198.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. CHYNo- WETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes or teeth cleansing and polishing devices and has for an object the provision of a simple and efficient device, by means of which teeth may be easily kept in a healthful and attractive condition.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which includes a removable cleansin medium, which may or may not be medlcated and which provides a casing or housing so as to practically enclose the device, the said cleansing medium being renewable at each cleansing operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus- -trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a ltooth brush vconstructed in accordance with the inven tion.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is a transverse section. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one end of the tooth brush showing the brushing or sustaining structure.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the cleansing element.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of cleansing element.
Figure 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a still further modified form of cleansing element. Referring in detail to the drawings, and more especially` to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, the reference character 15 indicates a. tooth brush, one end of which is formed to provide a head 16, from which extends a handle 17. The head may be of the same material as the handle, or it may be of felt, rubber, or other .compressible or semirigid material, WherebyA proper pressure may be applied to the teeth without discomfort. The head structure 16 is preferably provided along its face with eorrugations 18 or the like so as to provide projections which will lit the surfaces of the teeth.
Removably positioned over the head 16 is a cleansing element 19. This cleansing element is in the form of a casing or housing which receives and encloses the head and is constructed of an absorbent material of suitable character, such for example as the material used in the manufacture of pa er towels. The element 19 may be and pre erably is medicated or impregnated with a dentifrice and is so treated that saliva from the mouth of the user will moisten the dentifrice so as to insure proper cleansing and curing the cleansing element upon the head,
such for example as by providing the edges of the cleansing element with an inwardly extending rib 24 which is received within a groove 25 surrounding the base of i thc head 18. 4
If desired, the brush may be provided with -a cross sectionally V-shaped rib which extendsfrom the back at one end of the brush, and this rib may be covered by the cleansing lnedium, an extension 3() which is shown in Figure 9, being provided for this purpose. This provides a relatively sharp member which will facilitate the removal of foreign matter from between the teeth. The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form', proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A tooth brush of the character described comprising a handle having a head formed inte rally of and projecting from one of the sldes, said head being provided along its face with transverse corrugations providing projections and a cleansing eleles ment havinga pocket formed byside and end Walls respectively in which said head is received and provided with a transversely corrugated workingface coinciding with the corrugations on said head, the Walls ofthe cleansing element gripping the walls of the *lead to retain the cleansing element in place.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a handale having a head projecting from one end thereof and having its f ace transversely cor-
