To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that l, WALTER GLEDHILL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at lhehighton, county of Carbon, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Thread-Conditioning Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to treating of artificial silk, silk, worsted, cotton and other threads to properly condition same for use and has more especial relation to apparatus particularly adapted for oiling artificial silk. I
The leading object of the present invention is to provide thread conditioning apparatus in which threads are individually treated to receive the proper quantity of oil or other liquid and in which the requisite amount of pressure to force the oil into the threads can be regulated for individual threads. .A further object is to provide individual conditioning rollers which function through the instrumentality of thread contacting therewith as it passes from a reel to a bobbin. A still further object is to provide individual oil troughs which may be adjusted lengthwise of the apparatus as well as around a pivotal connection. A still further object is to provide a flow of oil, through the force of gravity, for regulated distribution to the various individual oil troughs. A still further object is to provide friction operated bobbins which may be readily removed as desired without interfering with their opera-ting means.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:

has been found in practice to give satis factory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described I Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1, indicates an oil or other liquid containing trough, of which there may be any number, two being shown for illustrative purposes. These troughs are of individual type and are disposed in spaced relation throughout the length of the apparatus. These troughs 1, are capable of individual, adjustable movement longitudinally of the apparatus for spacing purposes and also around a pivotal connection, for securing various angular positions of individual troughs. The troughs are supported upon an oil or other liquid distributing connection in the form of a pipe .2, which extends between the side frames 3, which latter is shown .by dashed lines in Fig. 2. Each trough has secured thereto a pair of hangers 4:, the upper ends of each of which are curved to engage around pipe 2, set screws 5, being provided to adjustably secure said hangers with respect to the pipe. Leading from pipe 2, to each trough is a spout 6, to supply oil thereto, the source of supply of which flows, through the force of gravity, from tanks 7, one upon each side of the apparatus. The supply may be regulated by means of a valve 8, one for each tank 7. Within each trough 1, is mounted for free rotation, a roller or drum 9, having a covering of absorbent material 10, as for instance felt. Each roller is mounted upon a shaft 11 freely rotatable in slots 12 in the said walls of a trough, as best seen in Fig. 1. A roller is thus capable of ready replacement without disturbing a trough. Carried by the frame 3, is a spindle 13, upon which are mounted for free rotation a plurality of reels 14, containing thread 15 to be treated. In passing from a reel 14, over a roller 9, to a bobbin 16,
thread is guided through a fixed porcelain eye 17 upon a trough and through other fixed eyes 1819 upon a support 20 carried by frame 3. The numeral 21 designates a driven shaft mounted in frame 3, and provided with a plurality of rollers 22 for by lifting one end of spindle from a slot. Thus the bobbin operating means is not interfered with.
In operation of the above described apparatus, and assuming that thread from a reel is properly positioned for winding upon a bobbin, and that the latter is rotating, said thread by frictional engagement with the absorbent material upon a roller 9, rotates the latter through the oil contained in a trough, whereupon the absorbent material becomes saturated with oil and is imparted to the thread. In order to impart a greater or less degree of oil to a thread, a trough may be adjusted around its pivotpoint to increase or decrease the tension of a thread with respect to a roller. In other words, by moving a trough upwardly around its pivot point the tension of thread upon a roller is increased and consequently the thread is embedded more deeply in the absorbent material and by moving a trough downwardly around its pivot point tension of thread upon a roller is decreased. By these angular adjustments of a trough a de sired and proper amount ofoil is supplied to a-thread.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: j I
1. Apparatus of the character stated comprising a pipe having a spout for distributing liquid, a trough to receive liquid adjustably mounted 'upon said pipe, a roller having a covering of absorbent material freely rotatable in said trough, means for feeding thread over said roller to continuously rotate same by frictional contact and means for adjusting said trough in an arc of a circle to increase or decrease the frictional contact of thread passing over said roller.
2. Apparatus of the character stated comprising a liquid containing tank, a piped connection therefrom the major portion of which is horizontally disposed, a trough to receive liquid pivotally mounted upon said pipe, a roller provided with a covering of absorbent material freely rotatable in said trough, means for feeding thread over said roller to rotate same continuously by frictional contact and means for adjusting said trough around its pivotal connection for increasing and decreasing the frictional contact of said thread with said roller.
3. Apparatus of the character stated comprising a horizontally disposed liquid distributing pipe provided with a plurality of spouts, a plurality of individual troughs mounted uponsaid pipe to receive liquid, each trough having an individual roller freely rotatable therein, separate means for feeding thread over each roller to rotate same by frictional engagement and. separate means for adjusting the angle of each trough to increase or decrease said frictional engagement.
4. Apparatus of the character stated comprising'a pivotally mounted trough containing thread treating liquid, means for adjusting said trough around its pivot point to a fixed position, a roller freely rotatable in said trough and means for feeding thread with respect to said roller to continuously operate sam by frictional contact.
5. Apparatus of the character stated com prising oil distributing means, an individual oil trough supported by said means to receive oil therefrom, an individual roller freely rotatable in said oil trou h, means for feeding thread over said roiler to rotate same by frictional engagement and means for adjusting the angle of said trough to increase or decrease said frictional engagement.
