F. R. WHITE BUTTON Filed July 30, 1924 INVENTUH FFH/VKL /N 7E WHITE A TTORNEVS Patented Nov. 25, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLN R. WHITE, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT BUT- TON COMPANY, 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BUTTON.
Application nled July 30,
To all Qin/1.0m t may concern.'
Beit known that FRANKLIN R. lVHrrn, a citizen of the United States, and a .resident ot lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Buttons, of which the followingis a specification. A
My invention relates to buttons, and more particularly to that class thereof Vwhich are attached to the cloth or garment by means of a metal fastener.
rThe object of my invention is to provide a button of the so-called open top type, (that is, that type wherein the plunger of the attaching machine passes down through the open top of the button and heads or turns over the prongs of the fastener) which is made up of a back formed of sheet metal and a front or top which has been stamped from a rod-likeblank so as to possess any desired and ornamental configuration.
I have found that when the front or top is made by the heading` process it may partake of any desired configuration or it may have any desired ornamentation or inscription formed directly thereon. My novel button may therefore partake of the outline of a four-leaf clover, a dogs head, or other fanciful shape or term, and being composed of some light metal such as aluminum will resent a neat and pleasing appearance, will be light in weight, and the top being of some thickness lends a substantial. appearance to the button.
A further object is to accomplish the aforementioned ends and at the same time provide a top or front with a centralized opening so as to admit the plunger of a button attaching machine to pass therein and properly head or rivet the prongs of a fastener to the button and without danger or likelihood of the top of the button being distorted or marred.
A further object is to provide an improved securement or joint between the shell back of the button and the laluminum top, and with the foregoing and other objects in view my invention resides in the novel button as illustrated in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will be obvious to those 1924. Serial No. 729,014.
skilled in the art to which my invention relates, it being .understood that changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawingu wherein: l
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my improved button secured to a garment;
Figure Q is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of the button;
Figure et is View in section of the front or top of the button prior to its securement to the back;
Figure 5 is a top plan View of the back of the button;
Figure 6 is a bottom of the button; and
Figure is aview similar to Figure 1 showing my improved button secured to a garment by a staple fastener.
Referring specifically to the several views, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, my novel button is composed of a back B which is stamped from sheet metal so as vto be relatively strong but light in weight.
The back B is of the usual construction and includes the hollow hub 10, the imperforate base 11 and the outwardly projecting flange 12, Extending upwardly from the flange 12 is al peripheral rim 13..
K The back as thus composed is of standard form and to it l attach the soft metal front or 'top 1e. The soft metal front is provided with the centralized opening 15 which lies directly above and is approximately equal in size to the internal diameter of the hub 10. The front or top 14 is preferably made by the heading process so as to be of any desired conliguration or contain thereon any desired fanciful ornamentation and in addition is provided with a smooth and rounded edge 16, downwardly from the under side of which projects the rim 17. The provision of the downwardly extending rim 17 forms an annular recess 18 which receives the peripheral rim 13 of the back therein. The two are then subjected to the action of suitable swedging dies (not shown) wherelplan view of the top by the rim 17 is turned over upon the rim 13,; the metal of the riml 17 .being shaped so .as to form va smooth. continuation of: the
which is adapted to be piercedv byfthe..
prongs 20 of a staple fastener7 the ends of which prongs are then.turnedover by a plunger (not shown) which passes down through. the opening 15: in, the. top of the .,button.
lVhi'le lhave. spoken of the .top as 4being rmadev oiimaluininuin, 'it Will be readily appreciated that it may be inade ofany soft .rnetal,.1.but preferably anon-ferrous metal oralloy, so as tofrea,dily assume any de-r` sired configuration or shape and partake or a.. high vand .pleasing lacquered 1f desired.
My improved button as thusformed ist considerably more economical toconstruct i than a hut-ton. formed entirely ottone piece f o'.l metal and at the same time it possesses.; .practically all ot the advantages. and de sirable features of thesanie.v The provision oli the opening Within the top o;f.tlie.but
ton allows the button to be used .in abutton attaching machine and insures. that there.
. will be no .danger orlikelihood of the top of the button becoininganarred or distorted vas it is fastened to the cloth or; garment. f Having .thus.. ully V'described and vex- Lpolish or may be.
plained niy invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
E1. A,button ..comprising a :bacioY stamped from sheet nieta-l and including a hub and an outwardly extending n flange; a front lnelnber of comparatively soft metal headed to the desired configuration and provided With a recess in the rear face thereof and a centralized opening` extending therethrough forE the reception of a plunger of a buttoirattaching machine, the flange of the back extending into said recess and permanently anchored therein.
2. A button `comprising ay back including aV hub, an. outstanding iange, and an up- Wardlyextending rirn7 a front Inember having a` `centralized opening. extending ,theretbloughsfor the reception of ay plunger of a button-attaching,mach1ne,,said front ...member provided adjacent its .edge With a ydownwardlyextending, riin detining a recess therebetween,=. the' rizn oithe` back extending upwithin` the said .recess and thegimetal or' therirn of the frontmeinher ibent overupon the rim of the back and forming aniooth continuation of the 'iange 5..:Sig1ied atr-Vaterbury. in the county o1 NeWaHaven vand-.State of Connecticut this .241th day of July A.
