Be it known that we, HAROLD DRABBLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 88. Chancery Lane, London, W. (3., England, and DAVID Nit- LIAM EDGAR KYLE, a Subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 31 Riverview Grove, Chiswick, London, W. 4, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in andRelating to TVindsc-reens for Vehicles, on which application has been made for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 26,951, filed 27th October, 1923, and No. 31,554, dated 15th December, 1923, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to wind screens such as are used for therear seats of motor Vehicles.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 shows a front view of the screen out of use;
Figure 2 shows a plan view of Figure 1 with the screen proper removed, and
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the device in use, with the'screen proper removed.
Figure 1 shows an alternative form of the tension rod in two parts.
The device comprises a pair of horizontal arms 1, 2, pivoted vertically. in suitable brackets 3, 1-, secured to the body of the vehicle. The arms cross in plan and at the crossing point a bracket 5, is secured to the arm 2 while the arm 1 slides through it. In this way the movements of the arms about their vertical pivots are definitely related. The lower arm 2 is fitted behind the upper arm 1 which is cranked at 1 1 to allow the arms to go back into the position shown in Figure 2. To-the arm 1 are secured two socketsG, while a socket8 is slidably mounted on the" arm' 2. This socket is provided with a clampingscrew 9 so that it may be secured to thearm 2, which is flattened or grooved so that the socket does not rotate on the arm.
It will be'understood that instead, the arms might be of any other suitable section, and that the form of the brackets, sockets and clamping'screw maybe varied in any convenient manner. Atension rod 10 is pivoted to the' socket8 and to the socket '7 secured to the arm 1. In this way the sliding movement of the bracket 8 is definitely related to the movement of the arms 1, 2, on their vertical pivots and if the bracket 8 is clamped, the Whole framework becomes fixed.
The screen proper 12 is hinged at its centre and is provided at the ends and centre with pins 13, 14, 15, adapted to fit respectively in the sockets 6, 7, 8. The screen is provided above the level of the supportving arms with windows 16 of celluloid or similar transparent material and is continued below the form: of a flexible apron l'i gpreferably of waterproof material.
In Figure 4: the tension rod 10 is in two parts, the ends being overlapped and clamped by means of a sleeve and screw 111. This permits, the distance between the sockets 7 and 8 to be adjusted to hold the screen properly stretched. The sockets 6, 7, 8, are at the same distance apart whatever the position of the frame, so that the screen is held stretched at the same tension at all times.
In use, the screen is mounted by the pins 13, 14, 15, in the sockets 6, 7,8, the screw 9 loosened and the arms moved into the position shown in 'Figure 3, till the socket 7 butts hard against the bracket 5. The bracket 8 is then clamped by the screw 9,
the slight strain put on the framework during opening producing tension in the rod 10, thus holding the framework rigid.
When it is desired to' leave the vehicle the clamp screw 9 is loosened and the whole frame pushed back. By cranking the arm 1 at 11 the framework can be moved back until the arnr ends have passed well beyond the back of the front seat and thus the doors of the vehicle can always be completely cleared permitting the vehicle to be entered or left without obstruction. The
amount by which the crank .11 projects from the back of the front seat isless than the depth of the upholstery and therefore does not interfere with passengers inthe front seat, as indicated by the dotted'lines v in Figure 2. I
The screen proper may, if desired, be
lifted out and folded up and put away.
The screen can be readily adapted for vehicles of varying widths without overlapping the sides by suitably spacing the other slidab-ly connected to the other of said arms, a. stop on said last mentioned arm positioned to limit the sliding action of said rod so that it is held in tension when said arms are in the position of use and means for securing said arms in the position of use.

A wind screen for the rear seats of motor and like vehicles, comprising a vertical pivot, an upper horizontal arm on said pivot cranked adjacent thereto, a lower horizontal arm, a vertical pivot thereon, a pair of brackets on the vehicle body in which said arms are mounted with the lower arm behind the cranked portion of the upper arm, a bracket at the crossing point of said arms secured to one arm and sliding on the other, two sockets adjustably secured to one arm, a socket slidably mounted on the other arm, means for securing said sliding socket to its arm, an adjustable tension bar pivoted to said sliding socket and the socket on the other arm nearer its vertical pivot, and a screen hinged at its centre adapted to be mounted on said sockets.

A wind screen for the rear seats of motor and like vehicles, comprising a vertical pivot, an upper horizontal arm on said pivot cranked adjacent thereto, a lower horizontal arm, a vertical pivot thereon, a pair of brackets on the vehicle body in which said arms are mounted with the lower arm behind the cranked portion of the upper arm, a bracket at the crossing point of said arms secured to one arm and sliding on the other, two sockets adjustably secured to one arm, a socket slidably mounted on the other arm, a hand screw for securing said sliding socket to its arm, an adjustable tension bar in two parts having overlapping ends pivoted to said sliding socket and to the socket on the other arm nearer its vertical ivot, a sleeve and screw securing said over apping ends, a screen hinged at its centre, and pins on said screen adapted to enter said sockets.
