T0 @225 whom may come-mt Be ii; known that We JAMES SMITH and MAXFIELD E. CONSTABLE, citizens of the Unitedgteies, residing at Deposit, in the 5 county of Broome and. State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful improvements in Shingle Roofs, of which the following is a specification.
@111: invention relates to roofs of buiidi0 ings and ii; has for its object to provide a "form of shingie roof. put on in section-L11 form, simpie in construction, superior in Wearing quality fire r: istzmce and rigib ity, atthe seine time having an artistic ap- NE peerence and design in imitation of tile reef. Wish these cb ec'ts in View, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction enei eri'engemene of peris will 99 hereinafter more fuiiy described and pointed out in the claims; i'efeience 'beine; bed to the accompanying drawings, in which:

in carrying 0111; our invention we have the roof, fermed at" secaionei strips, laid flat, as shown in Fig, 4 or a roof covered with es secsionei swipe, having in each, a series of transverse riciges Q2, separated by valleys 3.3, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 5. In carrying oisfi'ominventien, Whether as shown. in Fig 4: 01* rioioed es'siiown in Fi i 5, we pro viiie sections sirips formeri as foiiews: sectional strip A, having; an enter surface of a layer of slate surfaced mofing r") or other weather Wearing and eciepteiaie fiesible me'eei'iai; on the under side of the front 5% half portion of this section as shewn Fig. enfi eoowb enehaif in Width of t e' entire sec-sins we provide layer of acihesive meteriei a, eempesed of 3 532112150 or other appropriafe material of that ii'jlfid,'8i1d on this sssfs'ce We mouni a skip e1 section 02 shes Widih of mussel e3 such as fcrcing stool SZlfififliflg materiel on the unciei side of this We a coating oi" paint; the outer slate surfaced. material 6 being for the Weather or wearing surface enci the adhesivemeteriel 0 being for the purpose of seem eiy adhering the reinforcing setion 55 to the Weather Wearing sectien ami the fihree layers 5, c and 0! being firmly unified together by pressure and on the umier sine of she mctai section 05, provide e coating 0f paint. ; upon-this fie izensie'ns roof, the combination of the transverse ridges in each section with the recessed edges as before described to form an artistic ape pearance and finish in the roof; also the" .metal layers overlap each other as before described herein and-are fastened in the same manner so that no matter what the wear of the exposed weather portion is, there is a resultant metal roof beneath. The open ends of the ridges of the lower course may be closed by blocks of wood 6.6 inserted therein in any convenient manner. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and for which we desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. A roof comprising a series of overlapped substantially rectangular sheets, each sheet having its front edge portion projecting over the rear edge portion of an adjacent sheet and the front edge portion of each sheet being provided with spaced.
notches having inner edges arranged paralaeraeeo lel to the front edge of the sheet, each sheet being formed of a lower layer of metal and an upper, layer of slate surfaced roofing material, adhesive. securing said layers tosubstantially semi-cylindrical convex ridges.
3. A roofing as claimed in claim 1 in which the metal layers of the sheet are overlapped to form a complete unbroken roofing of metal.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures.
JAMES SMITH. MAXFIELD E. CONSTABLE.
