Description

W. M. BHSHOP ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed Aug. 11, I922 2 Sheets-Sheet l Patented Oct. 28, 1924.
UNITED STATEfi WILLIAM MOUNT BISHOP, F BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ADVERTISING- DEVICE.
Application filed. August 11, 19227 7 Serial No. 581,133.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaufort, in the county of Beaufort and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising.
Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to an advertising device.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to produce an outdoor advertising device that includes a cabinet in which there are arranged hand drawn cartoons and pictures showing black and white, without coloring in the daytime, and colored at night.
It is also my purpose to produce an advertising device that includes a cabinet comprising front and back glass plates with a mat interposed therebetween, the said mat having cut-out portions of varying designs that receive therein sheets each of which having a line view of an object on one face and a colored View on its opposite face ar- 25 ranged complementary with respect to the first mentioned view, the first mentioned view being disclosed in the daytime, while a transmitted light is arranged to the rear of the last mentioned view so that a com plete change of the drawing is effected in the night time. I
The foregoing, and many other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompanying and form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the advertising device as it will be shown in theday time.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4: are fragmentary views illustrating the front of the advertising or translucent sheet.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
illustrating the rear face of the translucent sheet.
My advertising device, as above stated is designed for outdoor use or it may be dis- Figures 6, 7 and 8 are fragmentary views played within a show window, and comprises a cabinet designed to receive the front and rear glass plates 1 and 2 respectively and between these plates there is arranged a mat 3. The plates are slidably horizontal in suitable guides 4; secured at the upper and lower edges of the cabinet so that access may be obtained to the mat, or interior of the cabinet if desired.
The mat 3 is provided with differently shaped openings 5 and arranged in the rear of the mat and in contacting engagement therewith, there is a translucent sheet 6. This sheet has on its front face one, or a plurality of line drawings, as shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings and which are adapted to show through the openings in the mat.
The drawing refers to articles to be advertised, and suitable printed data also appears upon the said face of the sheets. The rear" face of each sheet 6 has painted thereon a colored view8, the views 8 being disposed directly to the rear of the line drawings 7. Preferably the colored views 8 are of different characteristics from the line drawings so that an entirely different aspect is presented when electric bulbs 9, arranged at the rear of the, cabinet, are lighted. The bulbs are not lighted in the daytime, so that only the line drawings 7 on the translucent sheets 6 are offered to view. In the night time when the bulbs are lighted, a complete change of the drawing on the respective sheets is presented.
By taking one of the glass plates away from the mat, different advertising sheets may be arranged to show through the openings 5 in the said mat. It is my idea to use hand drawn and painted cartoons and pictures so that an individual touch is given each advertisement, which is impossible in the larger field of poster work and which is very much more interesting and clearer than newspaper advertisement. A suflicient space is provided within the cabinet for the reception of the bulbs 9. As a matter of fact, the rear plate need not be of glass, but the frame is to be of a construction to effectively protect the mat and advertising sheets as well as the bulbs from weather conditions.
While I have illustrated and described the colored views of different characteristics than the line drawings, I do not wish to be confined to such an arrangement, as both views may be of the same aspect to form a composite view when the bulbsare lighted.
Having described the invention, I claim z- An advertising device of the character clescribed comprisi'ng a transparencymade up j plate respectively and being provided with line drawings and printed matter on its face with colored views disposed directly to the rear of the line drawings to show therethroughin a manner to illustrate the intentional meaning of the line drawing but being of a different subject matter, a frame suport ing the plates, mat and. sheet in operative position, means carried by said frames for slidably receiving the plates and means for illuminatingsaid transparency for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM MOUNT BISHOP.
