piovision of an improvement over the clothk winding reel which has been disclosed in my application for Letters Patent of the United States for cloth measuring device, Serial Number 593,302, filed October 9th, 1922.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved winding reel which comprises a rotatable cylinder free at one end thereof and having a plurality of spaced members movable radially through slots in the winding cylinder to and from position to engage with convolutions of cloth on the cylinder, whereby the convolutions of cloth can be held on the cylinder or released for bodily movement from the cylinder over the free end of the latter, as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved winding reel of theY character described which will be compact in forni, will comprise but relatively few partsV and will be thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and` advantages will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompany ing drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my cloth measuring machine equipped with an embodiment of the present invention,

The hollow shaft 3 extends through the upright support 2 and extends for the greater part of its length in overlying spaced relation to the base 1. rIhe end portion of the hollow shaft 3 which protrudes from the outer face of the upright support 2 is provided with means, such as the crank handle et, whereby the hollow shaft 3 may be rotated.
A winding cylinder designated'generally`v 5 is mounted on the portion of the hollow shaft 3 which overlies the base 1 and coinprises a body portion 6 mounted on heads 'l' and 8 which close the body 6 at its opposite ends and arey provided with central openingsr receiving the hollow shaft 3, the heads 7 and S being secured to the hollow shaft 3 in any suitable known manner.
A winding frame is associated with the cylinder 5. This frame comprises a flat bar 9 which is adapted to be moved in a radial f plane through a slot 10 in the body 6, the slot 10 extending longitudinally of the body 6 for practically the entire distance between the heads 7 and 8. The bar 9 is supported in parallel relation to the axis of the winding cylinder 5 and in position to move through the slot 10 by a pair of intermediately crossed and pivotally lconnected bars 11 and 12 respectively which have their con nected together intermediate portions ex tending through diametrically opposite slots 15 in the hollow shaft 3, and connect 'the bar 9 to an angle bar 14. As best seen in Figure 2, the bar 11 is pivotally connected at one end, as at 15 to the bar 9 at a point adjacent to the inner edge of the latter and is provided at its other end with a laterally extending stud or projection 1S working in a guide slot 17 in a. radially extending leg 18 of the angle bar 14. The bars 11 and 12 are equal in length and the bar 12 is pivotally connected at one end'v as at 19 to the leg 18 of the angle bar 14 and is provided at its other end with a laterally extending stud or projection 2O working in a guide slot 21 in the bar 9. The hereinbefore mentioned pivotal connect-ion of the bars 11 and 12 with each other is indicated at 22 of connection of each of' these bars atthe opposite ends of the latter with the respec- -manifest that the bars 9 and 14 are held at all times in parallel relation to each other while being permitted to move bodily toward and away from each other as the crossed bars 11 and 12 are swung relatively to each other about the axis of their connection at 22. The angle bar 14 also includes a leg 23 which extends substantially at right angles to the leg 18. The leg 23 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart pointed pin projections 24 which extend outward from points located adjacent to and at equal distances from the outer edge of the leg 23 and in position to extend through a slot 25 in the body 6 of the winding cylinder beyond the outer periphery of the latter when the crossed connecting bars 11 and 12 are inanipulated to cause the bars 9 and 14 to be moved apart. Since the pin projections 24 are in a plane extending parallel to but laterally of the diametrical plane of the body 6,
it will be apparent that the pin projections may engage with folds or convolutions of cloth which have been wound on the winding cylinder 5 wit-hout tending to force said convolutions or folds outwardly from the periphery of the body 6 at the time the pin projections engage with such convolutions or folds, therebyfacilitating the insertion of the pin projections in the convolutions of the cloth as the latter are wound on the periphery ofthe body 6 to position to engage with the pin projections.
A coiled spring 26 connecting corresponding end portions of the connecting bars 11 and 12 together is under tension and tends to urge said end portions of the connecting bars toward each other, whereby the bars 9 and 14 will be spread apart or extended to the position shown in Figure 2.
Movement of the end portions of the connecting bars 11 and 12 toward each other in response to the actuation of the spring 26 to effect spreading apart or expansion of the bars 9 and 14 and movement of the end portions of the connecting bars 11 and 12 away from each other against the action of the spring 26 to effect retraction of the bar 9 into the body 6 of the winding cylinder and movement inward of the bar 14 in the body 6 to withdraw the projections 24 into the body 6 are limited by laterally extending stop projections 27 carried at the opposite ends of a relatively short bar 28 which extends diametrically of the hollow shaft 3 to the slot 13 in the latter, the respective stop projections 27 being in sliding vengagement with elongated openings 29 and 30 respectively, in the bars 11 and 12.
The bar 28 is connected to an inner shaft 31 which is slidably supported in the hollow shaft 3 and extends beyond the head 7, being provided at its outer end with a collar 32 which is held in spaced confronting relation thereto by a pair of oppositely disposed spacing and connecting lugs 33 which extend radially outward from the shaft 31 through slots 34 in the walls of the hollow shaft 3. The collarr 32 is formed with a peripheral groove 35 which is adapted to be engaged by a shifter arm 36 carried by a rock shaft 37 so that the shaft 31 may be moved axially in the hollow shaft 3 for the purpose of manipulating the crossed connecting bars 11 and 12 and particularly for the purpose of moving the connecting bars against the action of the spring 26 to cause retraction of the bars 9 and 14. The rock shaft 37 maybe journaled in the bracket 38 which extends from the inner face of the support 2 and is carried by the latter and an operating handle 39 may be secured to the rock shaft 37.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The expansible frame which has been hereinbeforo "f mentioned and which comprises the bars 9 and 14 and the intermediately crossed connecting bars 11 and 12 normally is maintained in expanded condition because of the action of the spring 26. In order to wind cloth upon the winding cylinder 5, the end portion of the cloth is engaged with the projections 24 and the crank handle 4 is then turned until the winding operation has been accomplished. In order that the roll thus formed may be removed bodily from the winding cylinder 5, the handle39 is grasped and swung in the direction necessary to manipulate the shifter arm 36 so that the inner shaft 31 will be slid axially away from the arms 11 and 12, whereby the projections 27 will engage with the elongated openings 29 and 30 to Vswing the arms 11 and 12 against the action of the springs 26 in such manner as to cause retraction of the bars 9 and 14 until the former has been moved bodily into the body 6 of the winding cylinder and the latter has been moved radially inward to an extent sufficient to withdraw the pin projections 24 from engagement with the convolutions of the roll. Since the roll will be loose on the body 6 of the winding cylinder when the bars 9 and 14have been retracted in the manner described, the roll maybe slipped bodily from the body 6 of the winding cylinder over the free end of the latter.

A winding reel comprising a cylinder having two circumferentially spaced openings in the peripheral walls thereof extending longitudinally of the cylinder, an expansible frame comprising two elongated members, one of said elongated members carrying a plurality of outwardly extending pin projections, Vand means within the cylinder for connecting the elongated members together to hold the latter in parallel relation and for movement radially of the cylinder to move said one elongated member to and from position to extend the pin projections through one of said openings in the walls of the cylinder and to move the other elongated member through the second opening in the walls of the cylinder to and from position in which it is disposed exteriorly of the cylinder.
2. A winding reel comprising a cylinder having two circumferentially spaced openings in the peripheral walls thereof extending longitudinally of the cylinder, an expansible frame comprising two elongated members, one of said elongated members carrying a plurality of outwardly extending pin projections, means within the cylinder for connecting the elongated members together to hold the latter in parallel relation and for movement radially of the cylinder to move said one elongated member to and from position to extend the pin projections through one of said openings in the walls of the cylinder and to move the other elongated member through the second opening in the walls of the cylinder to and from position in which it is disposed exteriorly of the cylinder, spring means connected with said connecting means for causing' expansion of said frame, and manually operable means connected with said connecting means for causing contractionof said frame.
3. A device of the character described comprising a hollow shaft rotatably supported adjacent to one end thereof, a cylinder secured on a free end portion of said hollow shaft, said cylinder being provided with two circumferentially spaced openings in its peripheral walls extending longitudinally thereof, and said hollow shaft having diametrically opposite slots through the portion thereof which extends through the cylinder, and having other diametrically opposite slots through the walls of the portion thereof which is located between said cylinder and the supporting means for the hollow shaft, a second shaft slidably supported in the hollow shaft and extending through the portion of the latter which is located between the first and second named slots in the hollow shaft, means connecting with the second named shaft through the second named slots in the hollow shaft, whereby the second named shaft may be slid in the hollow` shaft, and a radially expansible frame extending through the first named Slots of the hollow shaft and connected to the second named shaft, said expansible frame including two parallel elongated members supported for movement radially of the cylinder, one of said elongated members being movable through one of said openings in the cylinder to a position in which it extends beyond the outer peripheral wall of the cylinder when the frame is expanded and the other of said elongated members carrying outwardly extending pin projections and being adapted to be moved to extend the pin projections through the second opening in the cylinder when the. frame is expanded.

A winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a cylinder secured thereon, the portion of the shaft within the cylinder having a slot therein extending diametrically thereof, said cylinder having diametrically opposite slots in its peripheral wall, a radially expansible frame disposed within said cylinder and including pair of members movable radially through said slots in the cylinder to and from position to protrude beyond the outer periphery of the cylinder and a connecting bar attached at its ends to said members and extending through said slot in the shaft, said connecting bar being swingable about an axis extending transversely through the connecting bar and through the slotted portion of the shaft substantially at right angles to the axis of the shaft, and means operable to swing said connecting bar about its axis.

A winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a cylinder secured thereon, the portion of the shaft within the cylinder having a slot therein extending diametrically thereof, said cylinder having a pair of diametrically opposite slots in its eripheral wall extending longitudinally t ereof, a radiall expansible frame disposed within said cyli-I inder and comprising a pair of elongated members and a pair of connecting bars each attached pivotally at its opposite ends to the respective elongated members, said connecting bars being crossed intermediate their ends and having the crossed portions thereof extending through the slot in said shaft and pivotally connected together, whereby said elongated members of the expansible frame will be held in parallel relation to each other and-will be supported for radial movement through the slots in said cylinder to and from position to protrude from said slots beyond the outer periphery of the cylinder, and Vmeans operable to swingv said connecting bars about their pivotal connection with each other to cause radial movement of said parallel elongated members.
