Description
E. H. PEIRCE STOCKING DARNER Filed Aug. 15. 1921 Patented Get. 28, 1924.
UNITED STATES ELIZABETH H. PEIRCE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOCKING DABNER.
Appflication filed August 15, 1921. Serial No. 492,431.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH H. PEIRGE, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking Darners. of which, the following is a full, clear and exact description.
The invention relates to stocking darners and its object is to provide a darner which is provided with both foot and heel knobs which may be conveniently gripped and in which provision is made for relatively adjusting the foot. and heel knobs to adapt the darner for use in stockings of different sizes.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective of a darner embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
The invention is exemplified in a darner which comprises a knob 4 which is of suitable form to fill the toe portion of a stocking, a knob 5 which is shaped to fill the heel portion of the stocking and a stem 6 integral with the knob 5 which is smaller in diameter than the knobs to form a. convenient handle or grip, whereby the darner with a stocking on it may be conveniently gripped in and by a hand. The stem extends into a socket 7 in the foot knob 4 and is rotatable and longitudinally movable in the socket. A helical groove 8 is formed in the stem 6 and a pin 9 fixed in the foot-knob 41 extends into the groove 8. lVhen the knobs are relatively rotated, the pin and groove connection will cause the knobs to be adjusted to or from each other to adapt the darner for stockings of different sizes. The inner end 10 of groove 8 is disposed to limit the outward movement of the stem toretain the stem and footknob in connected relation. The parts of the dancer are usually formed of wood or other suitable material.
The invention exemplifies an improved dalrner which is provided with both foot and heel knobs and an intermediate portion of reduced size to form a convenient grip for the hand and in which provision is made 5 fo relat e y adj st ng he feet an he l knobs to adapt the darner for stockings of different sizes.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
l. A stocking darner comprising the combination of a knob adapted to fill the front portion of a stocking and having a centrally disposed longitudinally extending socket therein, a knob adapted to fill the heel of said stocking, a reduced cylindrical stem integral with the heel-knob and longitudinally movable into and out of said socket to relatively adjust the knobs within a sulficient range to fit in stockings of substantially different sizes, and means to hold the stem and foot-knob in adjustably connected relation.
2. A stocking darner comprising the combination of a knob adapted to fill the front portion of a stocking and having a centrally disposed longitudinally extending socket therein, a knob adapted to fill the heel of said stocking, a reduced cylindrical stem integral with the heel-knob and longitudinally movable into and out of said socket to relatively adjust the knobs within a sufficient range to fit in stockings of substantially different sizes, and means to adjust the spacing between the knobs by relative rotation thereof and to retain the stem in said socket.
3. A stocking darner comprising the combination of a knob adapted to fill the front portion of astocking and having a centrally disposed longitudinally extending socket therein, a knob adapted to fill the heel of said stocking. a reduced cylindrical stem integral with the heel-knob and provided with a steep pitched helical groove and longitudinally movable into and out of the socket to relatively adjust the knobs within a suflicient range to fit in stockings of substantially different sizes, and a pin carried by the front-knob extending into said groove to hold the stem and front-knob in adjustable relation.
4. A stocking darner comprising the combination of a foot ltnob adapted to fill the t at P n of stock ng and having a centrally disposed longitudinally extending socket therein, a knob adapted to fill the heel of said stocking, a reduced cylindrical stem integral With the heel-knob and provided with a steep pitched helical groove and longitudinally movable into and out of the socket to adjust the knob Within a sufficient range to fit in stockings oi difierent sizes, and a pin carried by the front-knob to hold the stem in adjustable relation there to, said helical groove having one of its ends disposed to retain the stem in the foot member.
