FRAME STRUCTURE FOR VEHICLE BODIES.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Narberth, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frame Structures for Vehicle Bodies, of whicn the following is a specification.
This invention relates to frame structures for vehicle bodies, and more particularly relates to a method of and means for mounting a body post on a frame.
One of the aims of my invention is to provide an improved. frame structure for vehicle bodies, and, more particularly, to provide a frame into which a body post may be incorporated, quickly and easily, and at any time, without requiring welding, drilling, or similar operations at the time when the post is connected to the frame. ft further object of this invention is to provide a connection between a body post and frame which is strong, durable, and tight, and to provide reenforcing means for the frame and post at the place where the connection is made. Qther objects will be inpart obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
Heretofore it has been customary to permanently incorporate body posts'or stakes in the frame when the frame is constructed, and welding. drilling and similar operations,
are usually required when the post is mount-'- ed on the frame. In accordance with my invention the fr me is constructed without the body posts but is supplied with means which permit the post to be applied to the frame at any time, by merely making a simple adjustment, all welding, drillinghof holes or similar operations having; been previously performed and none being required at the time of connection. The

where a cross piece meets a side sill, only fragments of the elements being shown; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fragment of a side sill. partially prepared for the connection; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a post receiving mem'ber adapted to be permanently attached to the sill to prepare the sill for the connection; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig portion 6 along inwardly extending abuttino" flanges 7. At the place where the post connection. is to be made the top wall 2 and the upper portion 5 of the inner wall are cut away, as at 8, and there a connecting member 9 3) is permanently attached to the sill. As shown, member 9 is constructed of two complementary channel shaped members 10, placed side by side and welded together, as at 11., along abutting inside flanges 12, thus forming an integral member 9, having a back 13, outside flanges 14, and a double central flange 12. The lower end of back 13 is arranged to fit against and be welded, as at 15, to the inner side of the outer sill wall 4, and side flanges 14 are arranged to extend upwardly from the top wall 2 of sill 1 at opposite sides of cut 8, and the lower edges of flanges 14 are preferably welded, as at 16, to the edges of sill wall 2 at the cut 8. At the lower end of piece 9, the central flanges 12 are bent sidewise in opposite directions to form flanges 17 which fit against the inside of the lower portion 6 of theinner sill wall. Just above flanges 17 the flanges 12 of member 9 are extended longitudinally, as at 18, over the middle of cross-piece 19, which is channel shaped. with the channelv opening upwards, and has top horizontal flanges 20 underlying and welded, as at 21, to flanges 7 of sill 1, and also has a channel-closing vertical end flange 22 which abuts against the outside of the lower portion 6 of sill 1 where the flanges 17 of member 9 abut against the inside of wall portion 6. To the bottom 2c of cross piece 19 l weld, as at 24, two angle pi ces 25 which have abutting upwardly extending flanges 26, welded together, as at 27, but the top portions 28 of which are orlset from each other so that the flanges 18 of member 9 will fit snugly between them.
Flanges 17, sill wall portion 6, and flange 22 are preferably secured together by means of bolts 29 which extend through suitable perforations ir these parts. Flanges 18 are preferably secured between portions of flanges by means of bolts 30 placed through. suitable perforations in these i I is. W elding may be employed in place of or in addition to bolts 29and 30 if desired. The al'nitting flanges l2 preferably supplied with aligned notches 81 providing openings 32 which are interiorly threadeo for bolts 33, by which a body post 3% may be connected to the frame, as will now be described. V
The body post 34 is prepared for connec tion to the sill 1 by toaning a recess in the outer surface thereof, shaped to receive the flanges 12 of member 9, and is provided with bolt holes o0 arranged to align with taps 32 or member 9. lhe post is arranged to snugly fit between flanges i l of member 9 with flanges 12 seated in the groove 35. To secure the post to the frame it is necessary only to place bolts through the bolt holes 36 of the'post and to screw them tightly into taps 32 of member 9. Prefers ly a loose washer plate 37 is provided which {its the rear of the post 3% and provides a bearing for the heads of the bolts 33. To disconnect the post it is merely necessary to undo the bolts 33, this permitting the post 34 to be lifted away from the sill and the connecting means.
The connection above described also reenforces and braces the sill, the cross-piece and the post, and permits or the employment of lighter material for the sill and crosspiece at the point of connection.
As many changes could be made in he above construction and many app rently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it i intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accom draw s shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is i V In frame structures, in combination, a frame member, a connecting member attached to said frame member a .d having a central flange provided with threaded boltengaging openings, and a post having a groove for said central flange and bolt-holes arranged to align with said threaded openings, and means, comprising bolts adapted tobe placed through said holes and to be engaged in said openings, for removably connecting said post to said frame member.
