This invention relates :to improvements in .padlocks and' morev .particularly .to those of Athe adjustable 'shackle .type
Heretofore it has been proposed to .securel the V.shackle .of a padlock ,inadjusted .posi- .tion .relatively tothe `lock casingy .with .the
use of- .key controlled ratchet :means-#the pavvl .of Vthe .ratchet being .springpressed and adapted to .ridelover theteeth formedby a .series ofnotches .in ithe side of the .shackle as .fthe'zlatter -lis pushedinto .the Vcasing and snap Ainto .said notches.
@ne `obfect of .my present invention 4is to `provide :simple and Aefficient friction clutch devices for ysecuring .the shackle against outward .movement from `any position: to which it `may `have been adjusted .relatively to the casing of the lock, andinoy provide- ;Ineans whereby said clutchdevices ma L proper key to release the shackle.
With this and .other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novelgfeature's of construction and combinations .of .parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a vertical section partly' in e1evation of a padlock showing one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, and
Figures 3, 4:, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 illustrate various modifications.
In the drawings, 1 represents the casing of a padlock and 2 the shackle-the legs of the latter being adapted to pass through the casing 1. The legs of the shackle may have an approximately semi-circular lcross-section so as to present flat inner faces 2 as indicated in Figures 2 and t.
A key actuated device such, for example, as a cylinder lock of the pin tumblertype, 3, is suitably secured Within the casing 1 he AAmanipelated :with the use .of a
and its .revolu'blel memberpf is s proyided' at? one end with a cam head '.5 forlapurpose" hereinafter .,enplained.l
Friction .clutch .members i6n are eccentrically mountedwithin the casing ik or -`preferably :Withinl a frame '7 located Linsaid .cas ing,s;-said clutch members being; so positioned that .they vmay ,engage the inner flat facesV Vof the shackle legs. Eachiclutch .-mlf ber .6 is proA vided `with al lugor .projeetion' and these engage z'the rcam head :5 carried by .the .revoluble member lof' :the key- .operated ;means. Springs 9` press .against .lugs
or proj ectionsF in a manner .to .turnxthei eccentric clutch :members Gland cause ithem to `clamp Lagainst the .shackle I,le-gs and Yhold the shackle against outward movement.
With `.the use o--f Aa proper key, .the .revoluble member 4. of .the key .operated `-ineans may be turned to impart rotary .motion to tfbe cam head '5 l,ande-ause the-latterftoyoperate the eccentric clutch .members .in amanner to zrelease the .shackle` Instead of providing springs to 1412117695.theV
clutch members- ,into clutching action,- this may ibe 10 ,carried-(through the medlimiof a l splilng 9a) :bythe revoluble member il of the -keyl .operatedV means as :shown in Figures@ .and armen camV head lservia; fto' -xnove the; ,clutch members :both `into, andnut.ofelutchinglrelaton tothe shackle- In Shovel in Figures ,-,5 and .feccentrc durch members 111 are .pronidedfand formed with serrated pQrtiOns :1.2 et@ engage the ...shackle legs and springs 13 are employed for turnfing the clutch members in a direction to cause them to clutch the shackle legs,-d said springs being coiled about the journals of the clutch members and having ends bearing respectively against the casing 1 and the lugs or projections on the clutch mem bers.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 7 and 8, the shackle legs 14 are made fluted or corrugated and the clutch members 15 have an oval shape and are adapted at their smaller ends to engage the fluted shackle legs 14 in a manner to prevent outward movement of the shackle. The clutch members 15 are provided with lugs 16 which enter a cam groove 17 in a head 18 carried by the revoluble member 4 of the key actuated means, so that When said head accomplished iby a groovled cam head the embodiment .of @the inventen is turned (with the use of a key) in one direction, the clutch members will be moved in a direction to clutch the shackle and when moved in thereverse direction to unclutch the shackle..
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 9 and l0, the legs 19 of the shackle are made slightly liuted and the clutch members 20 are provided With serrated portions 2l Which are eccentric to the axis of the respective clutch members to engage the fluted shackle legs 19. Y
It Will be observed that in the construction shown in Figure 9, the clutch members arek moved to clutching position by the action of springs 9 substantially as shown in the construction illustrated in Figure l and said clutch `members are moved to unclutching position to release the shackle, by means of a cam head 22 carried by the revoluble member tof the key operated means.
The construction shown in Figures l1 and l2isquite similar to that shown in Figures 9 and l0,-the principal difference being that in the construction shown in Figures ll and l2 the clutch members are moved in both. directionsby a cam head 23 carried by the revoluble member t of the key actuated means, While in the form shown in Figure 9,. the clutch devices are moved to clutching position by the action of the springs 9.
I-Iaving fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is l .1. In a padlock, the combination With a casing and a sliding shackle, of a cam member pivotally mounted in the casing and engagable with a leg of the shackle, a spring normally pressingsaid cam member in' a direction forf cooperative relation tothe shackle leg, and key operated means cooperable with said cam to move it in the opposite direction to releasethe shackle.
2. In a padlock, the combination with a casing and a sliding shackle, of a pivoted cam member cooperable with a leg of the i shackle to clutch the same, said cam member` having a projecting part, a spring normally pressing said cam member in a direction to clamp the shackle leg, and key actuated cam means cooperable with the projecting part on said cam member to move the latter toward releasing position.
3. In a padlock, the combination with a casing and a shackle, of an eccentric clutch pivotally mounted in the casing and cooperable With the shackle by engagement with the inner face of a member thereof to hold the shackle against outward movement, and key actuated means cooperable with said pivoted eccentric clutch to move the same to release the shackle.
a. In a padlock, the combination with a casing, a. shackle adjustable therein, and a key actuated device, of eccentric clutch members pivotally mounted in said casing and cooperable with the shackle to hold the same against outward movement, and a cam device carried by a movable part of the key actuated device to move said eccentric clutch members.
5. In a padlock, the combination with a casing, a shackle having legs adjustable in said casing and key controlled means, of eccentric clutch devices pivotally mounted in said casing and cooperable with the legs of the shackle to prevent outward movement of the latter, springs normally operating to move said clutch devices into clutch relation to the lees of the shackle, and a cam device carried by the movable member of the key controlled means and cooperable with the eccentric clutch devices to move the same to unclutching position for releasing the shackle.
