Be it known that I, PAUL LORANG, solicitor, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Metz, France, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Separators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to magnetic separators', and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter disclosed and set forth in the accompanying claims.
The -invention has for its purpose to provide a magnetic separator which will be positive and accurate in operation, and yadapted for the separation of the particles of iron from the dust of furnace-smoke or the metallic fume of furnaces.
According to the invention the dust or fume is conveyed along an iron-plate, which is magnetized by means of electro-magnetic coils. Owing to the long way of the dust along the said plate, a careful separation of the particles of iron from the dust is secured. The gathering of the particles of iron from the plate can be simply accomplished by interrupting the electric current of the electro--magneto coils.
Vith the above objects, and other incidental objects, in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts, or their equivalents, as hereinafter set forth.
In further describing the invention, reference will be made to the. accompanying drawing in which- Fig. l is a side elevation, partly in sectio-n;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device' Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a top view of a modified form of the iron-plate or lid; and
Fig. 5 shows a fragmentary view of a conveyer with shovels according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the letter a denotes a reservoir for taking up the dust from the waste gases of furnaces, or the refuse of converters in steel-works. The
reservoir has two openings b for theI connection with the two tubes or channels c. In each of these tubes va helical conveyer d is arranged. The tubes are provided with large slots in the upper part, which slots are covered by conveXed iron-plates or lids c; The latter are capablefofjbeing turned about the axles g and can be magnetized by means of electro-magnetic coils'z.,y which are Varranged in or on the `plates e. The
coils h may be supplied with electric current l in the' well known matter. Alongside of the tubes or channels care arranged trays o-r channels z' with helical conveyer or screws f, for gathering and transporting the ironparticles to a carriage 1c. The conveyers or 65 screws d and f are turned by belts Z or v other means. n
It is useful, to provide scoop or shovels m between the windings of the helical conveyers d. By means of the shovels m the dust is raised and led past near the plates or lids e, see Fig. 3. p
As shown in Fig. 4 the lids of the channels 0, may consist of two parts c1 and e2, which t into each other by means of cuts. The parts e, and e, are to be moved alternately at opposite directions 'about the aXles g1 and g2.
The working of the described device is the following The ferriferous dust from the waste gases of furnaces is transported from the reservoir a by means of the conveyers d. The plates e with the electric coils z, are working as electro-magnets and separate the particles of iron-from the dust 35 by attracting the said particles. In periods, the plates or lids are turned outwardly into the position indicated in Fig. 3 with dotted lines. In this position the electric current of the coils h will be interrupted and therefore the particles o-f iron sticking tothe plates e drop into the channels i and are transported to the carriage k by the conveyers f. The dust delivered from the particles of iron will be conveyed into the carriages n by the screws d. By the described device it is possible to separate complet-ely the iron particles from the flue dust discharged fromblast furnaces. Ihere-v fore, the treating of the latter in furnaces is not required. Further, with thisdevice, the ooze of gas-refiners may be delivered from iron. l
It must be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the specific form of the construction and arrangement as shown and described here, but that variations may be made in practice without however departing from the spirit and principles of the invention. 11
