' Be it known 4that I, CHARLES T. GronwEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Holders-,of which the followingis a speciiication.

The invention is an improvement in holders for use in holding labels, address cards and the like in place ponga shipping container so th-atthe latter may be sent by mail orin any other suitable maner.

More specifically-the present invention is an improvement over that which is disclosed in my prior application for Letters Patent ofthe United States, Serial #664,568, filed September 24:, 1923, in which I disclose a holdingframe adapted. to be secured to a sui-t case or like ,article in such maner that one ror .more compartments are defined between the holding frame and the suit case or like article, eachrcompartment being adapted for the receptionl of. a card and being `open at one end, the holding frame being provided at the normally open endof each com art-- ment with an inwardly extending fixe' retaining member i'or engaging' with the outer each card receiving compartment a simple,

It alsois desirable that the means for retaining the card in the compartment 5 or 6 shall be adapted to be manipulated quickly and easily to permit the removal of the card from the compartment when desired and the replacement of the card in the compartment. To these ends the present invention contem plates the provision of a card retaining member in the form of a substantially rectangular strip 9 of pliable material, such as fabric.v A retaining strip 9 is provided for each compartment and is of less width and length than the width and length of the compartment.

In the arrangement illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the strips 9 have end portions secured against the inner faces of opposite end portions of thestrip 2 by rows of stitching l0 which extend transversely of the front walls of the compartments and of the retaining strip 9 adjacent to the open ends of the compartments. Each strip 9 may be extended so that the major portion thereof protrudes from one of the compartments 5 or 6 as shown -atthe right hand side of Figure 3 to permit the insertion of a card in the compartment Vor the free-end portion ofthe strip 9'may be folded inwardly over the outer end of the card in the compartlment with which the strip9 is associated until the inwardly folded portion of the retaining strip 9 is disposed flatwise between the inner face of the card in the compartment andthe container l and thus serves not only to hold the card against displacement from the compartment but holds the card close to the portion of the strip 2 that constitutes the front wall of the compartment. Preferably, each ofthe cards 7 is cut away at` its outer end, as at l1, the cut away portion ll being slightly less in width than the pliable retaining strip 9 and being positioned infcentered relation in respect to the side edges o-f the card so that the pliable inl a direction transverse-of its length when the pliable strip is folded inwardlyr across thecbottom wall of the'- cut away portion y l1 `at the outer end of the card'. The e-nh Laissez in the compartment defines portions of the card at opposite sides of the cut away portion, as at l2, extending outwardly in the compartment beyond the pliable member 9 and thus being adaptedto be grasped conve-nie-ntly when itis desired to withdraw the card from the compartment. The card retaining strips 9 will be completely hidden from view whenin card retaining position.

With the arrangement illustrated in Figure t, an end portion of the pliable strip 9 is secured to an end portion of the holding strip 2 and against the outer -face of the latter by a row of stitching 13 which eX- tends transversely of the pliable strip 9. lThe pliable strip 9 thus is adapted to have the free end portion thereof folded inwardly across the adjacent end of the holding strip 2 into the compartment with which the pliable strip 9 is associated, the inwardly turned or folded portion of the pliable strip 9 being disposed between the inner face of a card 11i in the compartment and the container l.

VFrom the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. One of the cards held in place by the holder in the manne-r described may serve as an address card while the other card may have stamps placed thereon so that the container may be sent through the mail. These stamps may be replaced after each shipment by new cards or the same cards may be used several times and replaced by new cards when required. lt will be obvious that a holder embodying the invention may hold only one card against the container if desired and that this card may have stamps placed thereon and also may serve as an address card.

Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in formsg other than those illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore' consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations of the forms of the device herein described as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

As a new article of manufacture, a substantially rectangular holding strip adapted to Abe secured at'the longitudinal edges and at one one end edge to a wall ofy a shipping container or like support, whereby a pocket 'will be -dened between said holding strip and the supporting wall for the reception of a card, and a flexible strip attached to the holding strip at the second end of the latter and being foldable into the pocket against the inner face of the'card in the latter..Y

2. As a new article of manufacture, a substantially rectangular holding strip made of relatively thinv material and being adapted to be secured along the Vlongitudinal edges thereof and intermediate the ends thereof to a wall of a shipping container or like support whereby two pockets will be defined between the holding strip and the wall of the support, each of said pockets being open at an end of said holding strip, and flexible retaining strips secured to the ends of said holding strip and each having a free end portion insertable inthe adjacent pocket, as and for the purpose described.

8. As a new article of manufacture, a substantially rectangular holding strip made 0f relatively thin material and being adapted to be secured along the longitudinal edges thereof and intermediate the ends thereof to a wall of a shipping container or like support whereby two pockets will be defined between the holding strip and the wall of the support, each of said pockets being open at an end of said holdingstrip, and flexible retaining strips secured to the ends of said holding strip and each having a free end portion insertable in the adjacent pocket, said holding strip being provided with a window for each pocket. 4. As a new article of manufacture, a holding strip adapted to be secured to the wall of a shipping container or like support in such manner as to coact with the wall of the support to provide a pocket open at one end, a portion of the holding strip constituting the front wall of the pocket, said front wall of the pocket having a window therein, and a flexible retaining strip attached at one end to said holding strip at the open end of the pocket, said retaining strip being of less width than said pocket and having a free end portion insertable in the pocket to retain the card in the pocket.

As a new article of manufacture, a holding strip adapted to be secured to the wall of a shipping container or like support in such manner as tocoact with the wall of the support to provide a pocket open at one end, a portion of the holding strip constituting the front wall of the pocket, said front wall of the pocket having a window therein,

and a flexible retaining strip having the end portions thereof secured against the inner face 4of said holding strip at the open end of the pocket, said flexible retaining vstrip being foldable to position the other end thereof in said pocket. c
