To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES HERMAN DE GEOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Unit in the county of Wil liams and State of hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pickling Weights, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in pickling weights for use in or crooks to hold the contents thereof below the level of a liquid preservative Within the crock.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is made of porcelain or stoneware, glass or some similar substance which is impervious to the action of brine or other preservative fluids, and is of such a character that it will not crumble or corrode in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown preferred embodiments of my invention, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout;

Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a pickling weight for use With small jars in position in a jar;

Figure 2 is a plan view of the small weight;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the weight employed in large jars, and

Figure 4 is a sectional view of the weight shown in Figure 3.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a fiat, imperforate disk, the under surface 11 of which, or that surface which in use will engage the contents of the jar, being perfectly flat and smooth and free from in equalities of surface. The upper surface 12 of the disk is likewise free from inequalities with the exception of hand or finger grip openings 13, by means of which the disk may be engaged to remove the same from the jar or crock C. disk being of considerable size will be provided with hand grip portion, and in the form employed in jars and the like where the disk will be very small, the provision of finger grip recesses will be suliicient.

Particular attention is directed to the fact that both the top and the bottom of the disk are free from inequalities of surface and are smooth and flat, and further attention is directed to the fact that the disk is imperforate. These details I consider important due to the fact that l have found that the provision of grooves or openings through the disk affords pockets wherein air may collect and contact with the contents of the jar, causing the same to spoil. WVith a smooth bottom the collection of air bubbles upon the bottom thereof is practically impossible since there no place for the bubbles to collect.

Many changes being possible in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts of the disk without departing from the spirit of my invention, l do not limit myself to the specific structure hereinbefore set forth except as l ereinafter claimed.

What I claim is:

A pickling weight comprising a relatively thick, flat, imperforate disk of impermeable, non-buoyant material, the under surface of said disk being smooth and free from inequalities of surface. the upper surface of the disk having depressions formed therein to provide gripping portions whereby the disk may be engaged by the fingers, these depressions being semi-circular in plan view to provide parallel inside edges and curved outer edges, each depression extending downward beneath the inside wall thereof whereby this inside wall is undercut, said disk substantially correspending in dianr c-ceptacle adapted to receive the disk whereby the disk is guided b y the walls of said neck and also positioned centrally of the contents of the receptacle by said neck.
