HEADLIGHT ATTACHMENT.
Applicatio n filed August 28, 1922. Serial No. 584,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST O. SEITZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlight Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps and particularly to attachments for lamps designed for use on motor vehicles, traction cars, boats and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a movable support for the source of illumination which may be easily and readily adjusted to change the focus.
Another object is to provide simple and effective means for adjusting the source of illumination.
Another object is to provide reliable and eflicient means for maintaining an electric connection between the bulb and the cord of the lamp circuit in all positions of adjust ment of the bulb.
Another object is to provide a strong and durable construction which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the adjusting rod secured to the flange of the reflector.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like characters of reference designate corre sponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 1 designates a lamp casing having the usual glass face 2 which is carried in a frame 3 removably secured to the casing. A reflector 4 of parabolic form is located within the casing and is provided with an inclined annular flange 5 which is removably connected to the casing.
An incandescent bulb or illuminating member 6 is normally positioned at the focal point of the reflector and is provided with a base 7 which is detachably connected to a reciprocatory sleeve 8 extending through the reflector and is slidably mounted in a cylindrical holder 9 rigidly secured to the reflector.
A cylindrical plunger 10 is slidably mounted in the sleeve and surrounds an electric cord 11 of the lamp circuit. The inner end of the cord is secured to an electric con tact screw 12 which engages the base 7 of the bulb. A collar 13 is secured to the cord adjacent to the electric contact screw and is provided with an annular flange 14- which engages a flanged ring 15 secured to the plunger. An annular flange 16 is formed integral With the plunger at its inner end and surrounds the cord between the contact screw and the collar 13. An annular flange 17 is also formed upon the plunger adjacent to the inner end thereof and has a sliding engagement with the inner walls of the sleeve. A tubular member 18 surrounds the plunger and is removably secured to the sleeve. A coil spring 19 surrounds the plum ger between the annular flange 17 and the inner end of the tubular member 18 and retains the electric contact screw in engage ment with the base 7 of the bulb in all posi tions of adjustment of the latter.
A cup-shaped annular flange 19 is formed integral with the holder 9 at the outer end thereof and serves as an abutment for one end of a coil spring 20 surrounding the sleeve 8 and tubular member 18. The tubular member is provided at its outer end with an annular return-bent flange 21 which serves as an abutment for the opposite end of the coil spring 20. This spring nor mally prevents any movement of the sleeve relative to the holder.
A pair of spaced parallel lugs 22 are formed integral with the holder 9 and are provided with aligned openings 23. A segmental gear 241- is pivotally mounted on a pin 25 engaging the openings 23 and extends through a slot 26 formed in the holder between the lugs 22. The teeth of the gear engage a series of aligned openings 27 formed in the sleeve 8 and are adapted to reciprocate the latter.
The segmental gear 24 is provided with a bifurcated portion 28 at its outer end which receives the threaded portion 29 of an operating arm 30. A pin 31 is pivotally mounted in aligned openings 32 formed in the bifurcated portion of the gear and is provided with a transversely threaded opening 33 which engages the threaded portion 29 of the arm. This arm extends through an opening 34 in the inclined flange 5 and is provided with an enlarged portion 35 adjacent to its outer end. A collar 86 surrounds the arm between the flange 5 and the enlargement 35 and prevents'any longitudinal movement of the arm. 7 j
An annular seat 37 is formed integral with the inclined flange 5 and receives the head 38 of the arm. The head 38 is provided with a transverse groove 39 which may be engaged by any suitable tool to rotate the arm.
In use, the bulb may be adjusted with respect to the reflector to change the focus by rotating the arm 30. I Rotation of the arm in one direction causes the gear segment to move about the pivot pin25 and actuate the sleeve supporting the bulb in an inward direction whereas rotation of the arm in the opposite direction causes the sleeve to move outwardly.
lNhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

l. The combination with a reflector, of ii luminating means normally at the focal pointof said reflector, a holder carried by said reflector and having a slot formed therein, projections integral to and extending from said holder upon opposite sides of said slot, a support for said illuminating means carried by said holder and provided with a plurality of openings, and means engaging said projections extending through said slot and engaging said openings for moving said support to change the focus.
2. The combination with a reflector, of illuminating means normally at the focal point of said reflector, a holder carried by said reflector and having a slot formed there in, projections integral to and extending from said holder upon opposite sides of said slot, a support for said illuminating means carried by said holder and provided with a plurality of openings, and a member pivotally mounted on said projections, extending through said slot and engaging said openings for moving said support to change the focus.
3. The combination with a reflector, of illuminating means normally at the focal point of said reflector, a holder carried by said reflector and having a slot formed therein, a support for saidilluminating means carried by said holder, said support having a series of openings formed therein, projections integral to and extending from said holder upon opposite sides of said slot, a
segmental gear pivotally mounted on saidprojections, extending through said slot and engaging said openings, and rotatable means for actuating said gear to move said 7 support and change the focus.

member, one end of said member engaging said support and the other end of said'member having a bifurcated portion, a pin with a threaded perforation mounted in said bifurcated portion, a flange upon said reflector, and a rotatable arm extending through said flange and threaded at one end to en gage the threaded perforation of said pin whereby upon rotation of saidarm-said pivotally mounted member will move saidsupport to change the focus.

The combination with a reflector, of illuminating means normally at the focal point of said reflector, a support for said illuminating means comprising a. cylindrical holder rigidly secured to the reflector, a reciprocatory sleeve extending through thereflector and slidably'mounted in said holder,
a cylindrical plunger slidably mounted in said sleeve, atubular member surrounding said plunger and removably secured to said sleeve, an electric contact within said plun ger, means for retaining the electrical contact in engagement with the illuminating means, and means for normally preventing any movement of the sleeve relative to the holder.
