J. SANDERS PLOWSHARE WITH REMOVABLE POINT Filed May 28, 1923 gmwfoz Patented Oct. 14, 1924.
JOHN SANDERS,
PATENT QFFEQE.
DENVER, COLORADO.
PLOWSHARE 1TH REMOVABLE POINT.
Application filed May 23, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SANDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowshares with Removable Points; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plowshares.
It is well understood by those versed in the art of agriculture that plowshares are subject to rapid wear and that they have frequently got to be removed for the purpose of sharpening the point and edges thereof. The part known as the point of the share is subject to the greatest wear and is often broken and bent, owing to the presence of rock in the land.
It is the object of this invention to produce a plowshare that shall be so constructed that the point thereof can be readily removed, when worn or damaged, and replaced by a new or different point.
I am aware that removable or replaceable plow points have been made and I am therefore not claiming to be the first one to have invented this combination in its broadest aspect, but I have invented a new and improved plowshare in which the point is applied and removed in a different manner than that employed in connection with any similar devices known to me, my invention therefore being in the nature of an improvement.
In order to better and more clearly describe my invention, I shall have reference to the accompanying drawing in which the preferred form thereof is shown, and in which:
Fig. l is a top plan View of my improved plowshare;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view taken looking in a direction perpendicular to the share side;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3--3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the front Serial no. 641,909.
end of my improved plowshare, the point thereof being removed; and
Fig. 5 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow 5 in Fig. 2.
The same reference characters will be used to designate the same parts throughout the several views.
Numeral 1 designates my plowshare as a whole and 2 designates the removable point. The plowshare comprises share side 3 which has a cutting edge 4 and a landside 5 which has a removable plate 6 secured thereto by rivets or bolts 7. This plate can be replaced when worn. Plate 6 terminates short of or to the rear of the point 8 of the share and has a forwardly projecting portion 9 whose function will hereinafter appear. The share side of the plowshare is offset on line 10 near the point thereof. The extent of this offset is: equal to the thickness of the material of the point. An opening 11 is provided in the share at the offset. Directly over the opening a tongue 12 projects forwardly a short distance. Near the point of the share there is a keyhole-shaped opening 13 with the enlarged circular part to the front thereof. The point 2 has a share portion 1 1 and a landside portion 15 which has at its rear end-a notch for the reception of the projecting part 9. The share portion 14 is provided at its rear end with a tongue or finger 1.6 which is slightly curved and offset in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The finger 16 is adapted to be inserted through or into the opening 11 (Fig. A rivet 1'? projects through the share portion 1d and extends below the same a short distance. The ower end of the rivet is provided with a rounded head 18 which is of such adiameter that it will freely through the enlarged portion of the keyhole slot, th narrower portion of which is of a wid h equal to the diameter of the bolt. The relationship of the rivet, the keyhole shaped opening 13, the rivet 17 and the finger 16 is such that after the finger 16 has been inserted in the hole 11 a short distance, the head 18 of the rivet 17 can be inserted into the opening 13, after which the point 2 is slid rearwardly as far as it will go. As the point is moved rearwardly the rivet 17 will slide into the nar row slot portion of the keyhole opening 13, and when the parts are in operative position, the lower surface of finger 16 will act as a lock as it engages the-front edge of the opening 11. As the point 2 is never subjected to any strain, tending to move it forwardly, but almost exclusively to a force, tending to move it rearwardly, it will be securely held in place.
In order to enable the point 2 to be readily removed, I provide an opening 19in the part 3 a short distance to the front of the opening 11 and an opening 20 in the part 14. The opening 20 is slightly to the rear of the opening 19 when the parts are in their assembled position (Fig. When the point is to be removed, a rod or bolt 21 is inserted through holes 19 and 20 and used as a lever for moving the point forwardly against the locking action of the finger 16. The underside of the share 3 is cut away at 22 so as to provide a space for the finger 16.
It will be seen from the above description that with a plowshare constructed in accordance with my invention, the point can readily be applied and removed and that the plowshare will not have any parts thereof of undue thickness after the point-is in place. Where the points are secured to the share without first offsetting the same, the point will be exceedingly clumsy and will not scour properly. With my construction, the share will have a smooth upper surface and the landside will also present a plane surface. The point can be applied and removed without the use of wrenches and other tools, the only tool necessary being the rod 21 and a hammer. I want to call particular attention to the means employed for holding the point in place,th'e tongue 16, which serves as a lock, the rivet 17, which engages with the keyhole-shaped opening 13, and the projection 9, all of which means I verily believe to. be'new in this particular combination.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1.. A plowshare having the front end of the shareside thereof ofiset, the landside of the share having a removable plate secured thereto, the shareside having an opening at the offset, and a keyhole-shaped opening between the first named opening and the front end of the plowshare, a removable point having a share portion, a landside portion, a finger adapted to cooperate with the first named opening and a rivet adapted'to cooperate with the keyhole-shaped opening for holding the point in place in the share.
terlocking means between the landside por- 7 tion of the plowshare and the point.
3. A plowshare having the front end of the shareside thereof offset, the landside of the share having a removable plate secured thereto, the shareside having an opening at the ofiset, the rear side of said opening having a forwardly extending portion, a keyhole-shaped opening in front of said last named opening, a removable landside porlion secured to the plowshare, a removable point provided with a tongue adapted to enwith the first named opening, .a rivet adapted to cooperate with the keyholeshaped opening, a landside portion adapted to supplement the portion on the plowshare, interlocking means on said landside portion, and means on the finger for engaging the for "ard edge of the first named opening to hold the point in place.
4-. A plowshare having the front end of v the shareside thereof offset, the landside of the share having a removable plate secured thereto, the shareslde having an, opemng at the offset, the rear side of said opening having a forwardly extending portion, a keyhole-shaped opening m-front of said last named openlng, a removable landslde portion secured to the plowshare,: a removable point provided with a tongue adapted to engage with the first named opening, a rivet adapted to cooperate with the keyholeshaped opening, a landside portion adapted to supplement the portion on the plowshare, interlocking means on said landside portion, and means on the finger for engaging the forward edge of the first named opening to hold the point in place, said plowshare and point having holes that are eccentric in their normal position and adapted to receive a tool, whereby the point may be moved relative to the share.
in testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN SANDERS.
