IUI'I'LER roa m'rnmun-c'onnvszrron nnenms.
Application fled Augult 12, 1921'. Serial 10.481360.
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, LEROY J. Maa'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at 87 Boyce Avenue, in the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mufllers for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to improvements in mu ers for internal combustion engines, and the purpose of my invention is to provide a device, simple in structure, of comparatively inexpensive construction, and which will reduce to a minimum the sound caused by the explosions of a motor of the type mentioned, and at the same time create little or no back pressure.
These objects are accomplished by the mechanism disclosed by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my device upon the line C-C of Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 2 is a cross section upon the line a-a of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a cross section of my muffier upon the line b-b of Figure 1.
The same parts are designated by, the same characters throughout the various views.
In Fi 2-3 are also secured to the heads 10-40 by the rivets 7 '7 or other suitable means. portion of 'both members 2 and 3, as is shown, projects beyond and outside the muf fler head, as shown in the drawing, and each member terminates within the muflier" in-the funnel shaped ortion 13-14.
At the inlet end 0 the mufller, and a short. distance from the funnel shaped'portion 14 of the member ,3, and lying partly within the same, is a conicalbaflie plate or s reader 4, supported by the perforated diaphra 12 by rivets or other suitable means. e ist'ance between the conical bafile plate re 1, 1 is a cylinder, preferably of meta, provided with heads 10-10 at 4 and the funnel shaped portion 14 is determined by experiment, but issuch as to provide for the easy escape of the gases without creating back pressure.
. In addition to the diaphragm 12, there is a like dia hragm 15 located near the' exhaust end o the muflier. This second diaphragm 15 is supported by being riveted to the outer wall of the mufller as, shown, and. a hollow tube 5 extends between the diaphragms 12 and 15 to strengthenand stiflfen the entire constructionr' The diaphragms-12'15 are perforated with a plu rality of holes 66, as shown best, in Figure 2. The escaping gas from the engine entering by the inlet 3 is expanded by the conical member 4, finds its way through the holes 6 into the body of the mufiier, and thence makes its exitithrough like holes11 in the diaphragm 15 into the space between this diaphragm and the exhaust member 2,
and the funnel shaped portion 13 permits of easy egress of the exhaust gas. The number of holes in the diaphragms'12-15 is immaterial, but should be sufiicient in number and size to fully take care of the volume of exhaust gas coming from the en 'ne.
t is evident that instead of the .funnel shaped interior ends of the inlet and outlet, hollow hemispherical ends may be used without departing from the principle of my invention. 7
In like manner the number of diaphragm; may be varied from one to three, or more, but satisfactory results are obtained with two as shown. 1
Iiaving now described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a mufiier, a c annular heads, eac having an outwardly projecting annular flange riveted to opposlte ends of said body portion, funnelshaped inlet and outlet members riveted to opposite heads with their larger ends positioned within said body portion, spaced annular diaphragms having flanged outer ed es positioned within said body portion tures positioned concentrically with said lindrical body portion,
' tubular member and eutwardly of the same, and a conically-shape& spreader having radial ears riveted to one of said diephragms and extending into the funneL LEROY J. MARTEL. 6 shaped inlet fer the purpose of directing Witnesses:
the inflowing gases outwardly toward the EDITH. M.:BR0MLEY,
apertures in one diephmgm C. E. PERRON.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
