Description

Stiph 9 M. L. DE WITT SWIMMING AID Filed Nov. 21. 1923 lmzzeniarz Patented Sept. 3t), 1924.
STATES PATENT ihfiitiii rein SWIMMING AID.
Application filed November 21, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVILLE L. DE lVI'r'n a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Swimming Aid, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is swimming aid intended for use in swimming and mov ing about in water and for like purposes. The main object of this invention is the provision of means for increasing the speed and power of persons in swimming and for buoying them up when maneuvering in water.
It is also within the province of this invention to improve the construction and enhance the utility of articles of the character set forth.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description Jroceeds the invention resides in the coinination and arrangement of parts in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of swimming aid constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 showsstrap under the foot and upwardly on both sides of the leg to a point below the knee;
Figure 3 shows a vane.
In carrying out the invention there is a rigid strap of any desired material which extends under the foot upwardly on both sides of the leg to a point below the knee. Said strap A is held firmly in position by Serial No. 676,167.
straps B around back of leg and by straps or lacing E in front of the leg said straps holding said swimming aid in proper position when in operation. Also attached to said first mentioned straps by means of hinges are vanes constructed having parts thereof extend at about right angles with the face of said vanes so that in swimming the parts extending at right angles will hold said vanes in proper position.
foot is When the moved downward or backward it will cause swimmer to move forward or upward with ease and rapidity. When the foot is drawn forward or upward said vanes automatically change their position thereby making it easy to draw the foot forward or upward.
Said vanes may be made of any desired material, of any desired dimensions and there may be any desired number on either side of the leg without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention What I claim ent isas new and sought by Letters Patbracing the rear of the leg, and laterally swinging vanes secured to first mentioned strap adapted to swing outwardly upon a rearward movement of the foot.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aifixed my signature.
MELVILLE L. DE WITT.
