E. H. FAHRNEY CAR WHEEL -Filed Feb. 26. 1923 Patented Sept. 30, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
EiviEaY H. FAHR-HEY, or CHICAGO, iLLINo'Is.
can WHEEL.
Application filed February 26, 1923. Serial No. 621,131.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY H. FAHRNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car wheel construction and one of the objects of the invention 'is to provide an im proved wheel of this character which will comply with the high load specications and requirements in car. construction. A further object is to improve the construction of car wheels and to provide a car wheel in which the hub and web of the wheel are formed by a pressing operation or by a combined pressing and rolling operation, the rim of the wheel being formed separately by casting, with the periphery thereof chilled or treated to produce a hardened surface to reduce the wear thereof to the minimum, the rim being then secured to the web thereby reducing` the cost of manufacture and minimizing the amount of breakage.
A further object is to provide an improved car wheel construction in which the rim may be removed from the web or body of the wheel when worn or damaged and another rim substituted therefor.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob jects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a wheel constructed according to the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the removable felly.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the wheel consists essentially of a web 20 and hub 21 which are of any suitable configuration and are preferably formed by a pressing operation or by a combined pressing and rolling operation. The circumference of the web 2O is provided with a laterally offset peripheral edge 22 to form a circumferential shoulder 23.
A removable felly 24: is provided with a circumferential and centrally disposed rib or projection 25 having apertures 26 therethrough. This felly is of any desired configuration and is provided with'a plurality of apertures 27 opening through the sides thereof. i
This felly is also formed by a pressing or combined pressing and rolling operation and is adapted to be secured to the web 20 by means of suitable fastening devices 28, such as bolts or the like, which pass through the apertures 26 in the felly and also through the'apertures in the iianged portion 22 of the web 20.
The rim 29 of the wheel is formed of cast material and inthe production of the rim 29, the felly 24 is placed within the mould and the rim 29 is then cast within the felly, a portion of the metal from which the rim 29 is formed, during the casting operation will flow into the openings 27 in the felly to form lugs or projections 30. These lugs or projections serve as a means for securing the felly and rim together to prevent a relative circumferential movement.
The rim 29 is cast and connected with the felly 24E before the latter is secured in position upon the web 20 and the periphery 31 of the rim is chilled or treated in any suitable manner to produce a surface of sufficient hardness to minimize wear. The rim 29 is also provided with the usual rail engaging fiange 32.
With this improved construct-ion it will be manifest that by providing a hub and web which is constructed of pressed or combined pressed and rolled material there will be produced a wheel which will comply with the high load specifications required in car construction and at the same time there will be produced a rigid construction. The rim being formed of cast material, the surface thereof can be chilled or treated so as to produce a sufficient hardness to minimize wear and being removably secured to the web may be readily removed and a new rim substituted therefor in the event of damage or undue wear of the rim.
This construction will also reduce the cost of manufacture and the expense of maintenance as the same hub and web can be used over again after one rim has been removed therefrom. At the same time this construction will minimize the amount of breakage due to the fact that the body and web are of a pressed or combined pressed and rolled construction.
Throughout the claims the term pressed metal will be employed to designate the. construction of a portion of the Wheel, but it is to be understood that this term is not to be construed as a term of limitation as the hub and web of the Wheel may be formed either by a pressing operation, a rolling operation, or a combined pressing and rolling operation.
' lVhile the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown `and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement. of the several parts, Within the scope of the claims, Without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is:-
' l. A car Wheel construction embodying a hub and web formed of pressed metal, a felly formed of pressed inetal and detach-ed from the Wheel, a rim cast upon thel 'elly, and means for detachably securing the felly to the said web. Y
2. A car Wheel construetioneinbodying a hub and Web formed of pressed metal, a felly formedy of pressed metal and detached from the Wheel, a rim cast upon the elly, interengaging inea-ns between the rim and felly to prevent relative circumferential movement of the rim and felly, and means for detachably securing the felly to theI .said Web.
3. A car Wheel construction embodying a hub and web formed of pressed metal, a felly formed of pressed metal and detached therefrom, said felly having apertures therethrough, a rim cast upon the felly, portions` of the material of the riln during the casting operation iiowing into the said openings 'for securing' the rim, and felly against relative circumferential movement, and means de- .tachably securing the felly tothe web ol the wheel.
4C. A car wheel construction emlmdying a hub and web formed of pressed metal` the periphery of the web heilig shaped to form a circumferential shoulder spaced from the periphery, an annular felly formed of pressed metal and detached from the web, :1 rim east upon the felly, said felly haring f circumferential rib extending from its inner periphery, the end of the rib alnulting the said shoulder, and means engaging the web and the sa'id rib for detaehably securing the parts together.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification on this 17th day ol February, 1923.
