Description

Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
hdalll LEE R. TALBERT, LOS ANGELES, CALXFORNIA.
COMBINATIIQ' SASH LIFT AND LUCE'.
Application filed November 1G, i922.
To all tol/1,0m t may concern.'
`Be it known that I, LEE R. TALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Sash Lifts and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window sash fasteners, and has for its object to provide a simple, practicable and inexpensive form of window sash fastener'. Another object is to provide a window fastener of substantial construction and which may be readily installed in a window sash and its coordinate frame.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- F ignre l is a side elevation of a fragment of a window sash which is broken away to disclose the applied fastening device.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view looking toward the bolt retracting lever.
Fig. 3 shows av modified form of the bolt keeper.
The invention is shown as consisting of a cylindrical shell 2 of suitable length and diameter and is adapted to be set in a bored hole 3 in the window sash 1l. The shell 2 is provided with a bearing portion 2a in which is slidably mounted a shank 5 of a locking bolt or headG.
The bolt is normally shot to a locking position by a compressed spring 7 confined between the bearing 2a and the head 6 in the shell 2. Preferably, the outer end of the shell is provided with a fixed face strip or plate 8 through which may be run screws 9 sunk into the edge of the stile of the sash 4L in front of the pane of glass in the sash.
To facilitate up and down movement of the sash, one end of the face plate is pro vided with a purchase lng or tongue 1() to be engaged by the fingers.
A feature of the invention consists in providing means for quickly retracting the bolt 6 from locking engagement with the frame F. The bolt retracting means is shown as including a lever 1l pivoted on a fulcrum 12 which may be provided on the face plate 8. Beyond the fulcrum the lever is provided with a forked end 13 straddling the exposed neck 14 of the shank 5. Thus, by pressing the lever end toward the sash stile, the fork Serial No. 691,337.
end of the lever swings outwardly and pulls the bolt head from locking position. The lower end of the lever 1l swings closely along the upper face of the purchase 10, so that when the purchase l() is grasped the lever 1l is necessarily pressed inwardly to withdraw the bolt.
Various forms of keepers may be mounted in or on the face of the frame along which the sash slides, and in Fig. 1 depressed sockets 15 are shown as secured in the frame to receive the contiguous end of the locking bolt. ln Fig. 3 there is shown a modified form of keeper consisting of an elongated strip 1G provided at suitable spaces along the same with bolt receiving apertures 17.
From the above it will be seen that the invention consists lof an extremely simple and practical and easily operated and durable form of fastening bolt.
it will be seen that l have provided a combined sash lift and lock of such a construction that the elements are arranged through the stiles of the sash from edge to edge of the Stiles and the operating lever of the lock lies in the space between the plane of the glass and the inner plane of the sash frame, therefore, not interfering with the sliding of the sashes past one another. My invention enables the upper sash to be oonveniently lowered to a suitable distance to provide for ventilation and may be locked in such position and allows the sliding of the inner or lower sash freely without obstruction. Preferably, each sash is supplied in each of its stiles with one of the combination lifts and locks. The bolt withdrawing levers l1 preferably extend down close to the purchase lugs or tongues 10 sol that it is necessary to swing the levers in toward the edges of the sash and withdraw the bolts before the sashes can be lifted. By releasing the levers 1l, the bolts will automatically snap into locking position when a sash is shifted to bring' the bolts into register with the sockets or keepers.
Further embodiments, modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A sash fastening device comprising a shell adapted to be mounted in a sash, a bolt having a shank slidably mounted in said shell and provided with a head to engage a complementary keeper in the continguous window frame, means for normally pressing the bolt te the looking position, said means comprising a compressed spring surrounding` the shank of the bolt and eonlined in the shell, and a substantially plane lever mounted on the sash and having a fork connected to the shank of thebolt so as to Withdraw the bolt from looking position.
2. A sash fastening device comprising a shell adapted to be mounted in a sash, a bolt having a shank slidably mounted in said shell and provided with a head to engage a complementary keeper in the contiguous window frame, and means for normally pressing the bolt to the looking position, said ine-ans comprising` a compressed spring surrounding the shank oi' the bolt and confined in the shell, the shell having a lace plate adapted to be fastened to an edge of the stile of the sash, a plane lever pivoted near its` upper end on said plate, said plate having a finger rest close to and along which the lever end sweeps when actuated.
3. sash fastening device comprising a shell adapted to be mounted in a sash, a bolt having` a shank slidably mounted in said shell and provided with ay head to engage a complementar)7 keeper in the contiguous window iframe, means for normally pressing the bolt to the looking position, said means comprising a compressed spring surrounding the shank of the bolt and confined in the shell, and a. lever mounted on the sash and having,- a iol-lied end slidablyv engaging the said shank.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this speeilication.
