Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
what@ FREDERICK LUNDBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLNOIS.
BURIAL GASKET.
appucaun and January 14, 1924. serial no. esatte.
To all whom t may cri/'Learn Be it known that I, Fnnonmok LUNDBERG, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial Caskets, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to burial-caskets l0 and has for an object toprovide such a casket with wing means which may be quickly attached to any style or form of casket, for producing a couch eect. Another object is to arrange such wing means and also the cover oft' the casket so that the cover will completely conceal said wing means when in closed position, and without making use of or displaying any split covers, split mouldings, mitred joints, or vprotrud- 20 ing hinge ends, or the like. And another object is to provide a casket with wing means having mounting means thereon 'for extending said means outwardly to produce a couch effect, and to support the same eX-` tended inwardly in a concealed position under the casket cover, and also to readily attach and detach said wing means from said casket.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood byA reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a closed casket embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation with the cover and the wing means in extended or opened posit-ion to produce a couch effect;
Fig. 3 is a partial perspective view illus` trating how the wing means may be readily attached or detached from the casket body;
Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged vertical sections showing the connections of the front and the end wings respectively with the top portions of the casket body; and
Fig. 6 shows a slotted hinge plate used on the top of wooden casket bodies.
The preferred form of my invention illustrated comprises a casket body or shell 10 of any suitable size, form and material, and provided with a cover 11 which preferr ably has an upper part 12 suitably hinged or mounted to the body 10 so as to beextended upwardly theretrom, as shown in Fig. 2.
M y particular wing means which is readily attachable to the casket preferably comprises an end member or wing 13 and a iront member or wing 14, the member 13 having curved tongues 15 secured thereto and the member 14 having similar curved tongues 16 fastened thereto with hinged portions 17. Suitable slots 18 are vprovided in the top portionsy or plates 19 and V2() at the upper end and the front end of the casket body to receive the curved ends 15 and 1G of tongues 15 and 1G, respectively. The ends 15 ot tongues 15 are so curved and arranged that the end member 13 may be held outwardly extended thereby, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and may be held inwardly extended, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 5; likewise the tongues 16 with their curved ends and hinged portions are so arranged in conjunction with member 14 as to support said member when extended forwardly over the front of the casket, as shown in Figs. 2 and '-1, and also to support said member 14; when extended inwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. Connecting means in the form of a socket 21 and button 22 may also be provided on members 13 and 11i to secure said members together when placed inwardly of the casket. Suitable drapery 23 and 24: is placed over the wing members 13 and 14, substantially covering same when in an outwardly extended position, and therewith producing a. couch effect, as shown in the drawings.
lWhen these wings are folded or extended inwardly they will tit beneath the usual concaved or curved outer portions 25 of the cover part 12, and the cover thus entirely closing and concealing the wing members from view, thereby entirely avoiding the customary use and the consequent unsightly display of many hinge ends and numerous slits caused by split parts or joints and mouldings, contained in the ordinary construction.
These wings with the attached form of n'iouuting means may be quickly applied to any style or make ot casket by simply providing slots 18 in the metal plate or part at the top edge ot the casket at its front and upper end. asis best indicated in Fig. 3. and said wing means may be also readily detached when no longer wanted. It desire-d the front wing 1li may also extend under the metalic top plates 19 and 20 asV well as under the discs or plates 27, to permit proper movement of vthe curved ends of said tongues.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into edect, this is capable.
of Variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited `to the precise details of construction set forth, but `desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is k: p
1. In combi-nation with a casket having cover means connected ,to its body, rigid Wing means with drapery mountable on said casket body to produce a couch effect, and tongues on said wing means adapted to engage slots in said casket body for permitting ready attachment or removal of said wing means from said body and for supporting said wing means concealed under the cover.
2. A .casket comprising a body and rigid wing means provided with drapery, slot and tongue ymeans arranged to removably mount saidl wing means on said body and to extend the same outwardly therefrom to produce ably mounted on said body.. and arranged to conceal said wing means thereunder when in `closed position.
3. A casket having means detach-ably hinged thereon to be extended outwardly therefrom for producing a couch effect, said means being arranged to be extended inwardly of said casket, and a cover having a curved portion adapted ytoenclose and conceal said wing means when both are in closed position. f
4. A casket ,comprising wing means detachably and swingably mounted thereon withslot and tongue means, and a swingableJc-over, said wing means being extendable outwardly, when said cover is open, to produce a cou'ch effect, and said cover being formed to entirely conceal said wing means when both are moved to closed position.
5. A casket comprising a body wit-lr a cover and with slotted means at the top of its front and upper end, a ywing member with curvedtongues engaging in said fro-nt slots, and a wing member with curved tongues engaging in slots at the upper end, said wing members and tongues being arranged to extend outwardly from said body for producing a couch veffect and to be supported in an inwardly extending position, and said cover being ycurved to enclose and conceal said wing men'ibers when in closed position.
In testimonyA whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing kwitnesses. l
FREDERICK LUNDBERG.
