Sept. 9, 1924. 1,508,237 H. D. MURDOCK CONTROL APPARATUS AND SYSTEM Filed Oct. '7. 1921 WITNESSES: INVENTOR Q?- gjmm flew/3g Murdock v ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 9, 1924-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. llIURDOCK, O13 VJILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG-NOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORIORATIUN' OF PENNSYL- VANIA;
CONTROL APPARATUS AND SYSTEM.
Application filed October 7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. Munnoon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Villrinsburgin the county of Allegheny and the State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Control Apparatus and Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to control systems and it has particular relation to control systems embodying a line switch that is governed by a controller.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved method for so controlling a line switch that it shall be closed upon the controller bein actuated in one direction and opened upon the controller being actuated in another direction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a control system for so governing a line switch that it may be closed only upon the controller being actuated in a forward direction to its first operative position.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide means for governing a line switch that shall be simple and economical in construction and positive and reliable in operation.
Briefly speaking, my invention consists in employing a relay having a plurality of op positely wound coils to govern the closure of a line switch, the energization of the coils of the relay device being selectively governed by means of a switching device that is associated with a master controller.
For a better understanding of my invention,'reference may be made to the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 of which is diagrammatic view of a motor-control system embodying my invention v and Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation, ot'a portion ofa controller that is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Referring to Figs. land 2 of the drawing, a motor 1, having an armature 2 and a series field-magnet winding 3, is energized, upon the closure of a line switch 6, from a source of electrical energy, such, for example, as a trolley-wire 4:, through a trolley-pole 5, the line switch or circuit-breaker 6, actuating coil of an overload trip 1%, series f eldinagnet winding 3 and armature 2 of the motor 1 and starting resistor 7 to urlOdIlCl.
The line switch 6 is provided with an actuating coil 8, the energization of which is Serial No. 505,995.
governed by a relay device 9 having a plurality of oppositely-wound actuating coils 11 and 12, and a controller 13. The overload trip 1% is provided for opening the line switch 6 upon the occurrence of excessive current conditions. The relay device 9 is provided with a core member 15 and a pivotally mounted armature member 16 which is biased to its open position by means of a resilient member or spring 17.
A stationary control linger 18 is adapted to be engaged by a contact member 19 that is securely mounted upon the armature member 16. The energization of the coils 11 and 12 of the relay device 9 is governed by the controller 13, which may comprise a rotatably mounted shaft 21 upon which is secured a non-conducting drum member 22 having an Oil position and a plurality of operating positions.
A contact segment 23, which is securely mounted upon the drum 22, is electrically connected to Ground by means of a circuit comprising a conductor 2%, shaft 21 and conductor 25 in accordance with a familiar practice. An arm 26, which is resiliently mounted upon a block 2? constituting part. of the controller 13, is provided with a pivotally mounted member 28. The member 28, which may be actuated by frictional engagement with drum 22, engages the contact segment when the controller 13 occupies its first position, which is the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The pivotally mounted contact member 28 is permanently connected to the actuating coil 11 of the relay device 9. lVhen the pivotally mounted inemb 28 is actuated in a clockwise direction by the drum member 22 of the controller 13, the member 28 engages a stationary contact member 29 which is permanently electrically connected to the actuating coil 12.
A pivotally mounted member 31, which is adapted to move between a plurality of stops 32 and 33, prevents the pivotally mounted contact member 28 from engaging the contact segment 23 when the drum 22 is actuated in a counter-clockwise direction toward its Oil position.
The closure of the line switch 6 is efiected by actuating the controller 13 from its Oil position to its first position, wherein the contact segment 23 engages the pivotally mounted contact member 28, thereby establishing a circuit from the trolley-wire t through contact members of the overloadtrip 14, auxiliary resistor 84, actuating coil 8 of the line switch 6, actuating coil 11 of the relay device 9, pivotally mounted member 28, contact segment 23, conductor 2%, controller shaft 21 and conductor to Ground.
When the coil 11 of the relay 9 is energized, the armature member 18 thereof assumes its closed position, thereby establishing a holding circuit from the trolley-wire a through the contact members of the relay device 14:, auxiliary control resistor 84, actuating coil 8 of the line switch 6, actuating coil 11 of the relay device 9, control lingers 18 and 19 of the relay device 9 and auxiliary control resistor to Ground.
lVhen the'controller 13 is actuated beyond the first position, the contact segment 28 is no longer engaged by the control linger However, the coils 8 and .11 or the line switch 6 and relay 9, respectively, are onergized by the holding circuit througlithe control fingers 18 and 19, which has just been described.
hen the controller 13 is actuated in counter-clockwise direction, the pivotally mounted contact member 28 is actuated in a clockwise direction by its frictional engagement with the drum 22, thereby causing the contact member 28 to engage the statYonary contact member 29. I
Under these conditions, a circuit is established from the trolley-wire 4; through contact members of the overload relay 1 1, an iliary control resistor Shactuating coil 8 of the line switch 6, actuating coil 12 of the relay 9, stationary contact member 29, pivotally 'mounted contact member 28, control fingers 18 and 19 of the relay device 9 and auXliary control resistor 35 to Ground.
When both coils 11 and 12 of the relay device 9 are energized, the relay device will be quickly opened by the armature member 18 being actuated in a counter-clockwise direction by the spring 17, as the coils 11 and 12 are oppositely wound, thereby establishing opposing magnetic fields.
When the armature member 6 of the relay device 9 assumes its open position, coil 8 of the line switch 6 andcoils 11 and 12 of the relay device '9 are tie-energized, as the movable control finger 19 no longer engages the stationary control finger 18. The line switch 6 will not be closed, when the controller 13 is returned to its first position, as the pivotally mounted member 31 forces the contact member 28 outwardly to prevent it from engaging the contact segment 23.
From the above description, it is apparent hat, by means of a simple relay device and a switching device, which may be mounted on practically any controller, it is possible to secure efiective and positive operation of a line switch, the relay device being so desgned as to insure very rapid opening of the switch, when the controller is actuated in a reverse direction.
If it is considered preferable to dispense with the relay 9, substantially the same arrangementot' circuits may be obtained by providing the line switch 6 with two opposite'ly wound coils and an auxiliary contact member for establishing a holding circuit.
lVhile I have shown my invention in a preferred form, it is apparent that other modifications may be made in the arrangement of the circuits and in the apparatus employed without departing from the spirit of my invention. I desire, therefore, to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
claim as my invention:
