Description

Sept. 9. 1924, 7 1,507,737 v LH. JAMES H SAFETY RAZOR Filed larch 5, 1922 87mm T'Tu ca-h JAmas. his a-womw Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
PATENT orrica.
HUGH JAME$, F MONTBOSE, ILLINOIS.
sArE'rY nszon.
' Application filed-March 3, i922. semiarid. 540,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH JAMES, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Montrose, in the county of Eflingham, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and iiseful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to razors, having reference particularly to an improved safe- -ty razor.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of this character having a single blade of the hollow-ground variety adapted for alternate attachment .to its 5 handle in transverse and parallel relation to the handle axis, whereby the blade may be alternately placed in position for shaving, by the safety razor method, and for honing, thus obviating the necessity of employing a plurality of blades and conserving exor dulled blades or" the character generally employed in safety razors a further object being to provide a device which is du- 5 rable, simple in construction and inexpensive.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cylindrical blade holder, a blade of the hollow-ground variety, meansfor detacho ably clamping said blade to the holder, 2 safety guard, and a detachable handle adapted to be alternately adjusted to the blade in transverse relation and in extended parallel relation, whereby the blade may 36 be employed for shaving when adjusted transversely to the longitudinal axis of the handle and for honing when adjusted in extended position parallel with said handle axis, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an embodiment of my invention, the elements being assembled to form a safety razor;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side view;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the elements assembled for honing the blade;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a rear edge view.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a handle of v 55 cylindrical shape having a contracted extension 2 which tapers at its end part and scribed.
is further extended to form an integral screw 3. Rotatably mounted on the extension 2, and held between the shoulders 1' and a fixed pin 4, is a sleeve 5, which is pe ripherally serrated or milled to form a finger grip, said sleeve having a screw-threaded extension 6 for engaging the inner member of the blade holder hereinafter! die- The blade holder comprises an inner tabu lar member or core 7 which is interiorly screw-threaded at'each end, said ends being provided respectively with diametrically oppositely located slots 8. Engaging the core 7 is a clamping-member 9 having outwardly conveying extension 10, for clamping engagement with the body of a hollow-ground blade 11,, said blade having a tapered knifeextension 12 and said clamping-member 9 9 is a resilient guard 14 having teeth 15, located adjacent to the cutting edge 12 of the blade 11, and rearwardly extended upwardly curved tongues 16, which friction- Iajely engage the rear of the clamping-memr 9. The core- 7 is "further provided with a transverse opening .17, which is interiorly screw-threaded, said opening registering with an opening 18 of the clamping-memher 9, whereby the threaded end 3 of the handle 1 may be fixed to the core 7, when the device is assembled for use as afsafety razor, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The guard 14 has at each end an inte rally formed extension 19 which terminates in an inwardly directed tongue 20, which bears on the upper extension 10 of the being fixed to the core 5 by means ofscrews pense incident to the scrapping of worn 13. i
snugly fitted over the clamping-member clamping member 9, for the purpose"- of' maintaining secure engagement with said clamping member and preventing sliding movement of the blade 11.
In the operation and use of the invention, when the device is used as a safety razor, the elements are assembled as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, with the extension 3 of the handle 1 screwed. into the opening 17 of the core 7. When the blade becomes dulled the guard 14: is detached from the clamping-member 9 and the handle is unscrewed from the opening 17, then the handle is placed in parallel extended relation with one of the threaded ends of the core 7, by inserting the pin 4 within the outer ends of the slots 8, whereupon by rotating ters Patent, is:
the screw-sleeve 5 the handle can be secnrely fixed to the core 7, as shownin Fig. 5 of the drawings; the blade edge 12 may then be honed and strapped in the manner commonly employed for sharpening an ordinary, or old fashioned razor.
It is manifest that by employing a razor of this construction I embody all of the protective elements of a safety razor While employing all of the eficient qualities of a hollow-ground blade which is readily adaptable for honing and stropping, thus conserving expense incident to scrapping of Worn or dulled blades and eI'iio-ient shaving implemen I do not Wish to be understood as con fining myself to the specific details and formation of the mechanical elements as shown and described herein, as under the spirit of my invention I believe that I am entitled'to employ such variations as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. In a shaving implement, a hollow blade holder having converging clamping fiiriembers designed to engage a blade,acore fixed within said blade holder,a guard detachably connected with said blade holder, and a handle adapted to he detachably connected to said core intermediate its'ends, and in angular relation thereto, said handle be ing also adapted to be detachably connect-ed to an end of said core in axial relation thereto.
providing a very I natively fixed transverse relation to the longitudinal axis of the blade holder and in parallel extended relation therewith from either end thereof.
3. In a shaving implement, a blade holder comprising a body, which is segmental in cross section, and converging jaws extended from said body, and a blade which is tapered in cross section for engagement between said jaws, and a tubular core fixed Within said blade holder, said core having interiorly sorew-threaded ends and a transversely directed and interiorly screwthreaded opening, and a handle having a screw-threaded end adapted to be alternately fixed to said opening and to either end of the core, whereby the blade may be.
alternately held in transverse relation to the longitudinal axis of the handle and in parallel extended relation thereto, and means for lockingthe handle to the blade holder to prevent rotation of said elements while the device is in use.
