Description

V. ZUGAJA Septe 2 y PISTOL Filed May 13, 1,922

VID ZUGAJA, OF YO'UNGSTON, GIIXQ.
PISTOL.
Application filed May 13, 1922.
To all ily/10m it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Vm ZUGAJA, a citizen of Yugoslavia, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful. improvements in pistols and has particular reference to the breaking of the pistol barrel or tube for the purpose of placing a cartridge in position therein.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a pistol of the type above set forth wherein the trigger guard is pivotally mounted upon the body of the pistol frame and cooperates with the hinged barrel for holding the latter in its proper assembled position on the gun frame.
The invention further embodies in a pistol of the above type, tensioned locking means for the hinged trigger guard to prevent accidental. movement thereof and breaking of the pistol barrel.
lilith the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, that same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figur@ 1 shows by dotted lines a side elcvational view of a pistol having a hinged barrel section with the improved trigger guard and locking means for the guard associated with the pistol,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, similar to Figure l showing the pistol barrel hinged or broken with the trigger guard swung upon its pivotal. mountingand released from the keeper means therefor,`
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the trigger guard detached from the pistol, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the locking latch for retaining the trigger guard in its operative position.
Referring more in `detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated by dotted lines, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, a pistol embodying a body frame 1 carrying a handle stock 2 with a barrel 3 hinged Serial No. 560,617.
as at 4 to the pistol frame 1 the barrel 3 being provided with a rearwardly directed lug 5 projecting from the lower side thereof as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The frame 1 of the pistol is provided with usual trigger mechanism that has a guard pivotally mounted upon the frame 1, the guard 6 as shown being of substantially Ll shaped formation pivoted adjacent one end thereof as at 't' to the pistol frame and provided upon the pivoted end thereof with-an outwardly directed lug 8. The opposite end of the guard 6 carries a lug projection 9 that is received in thesocket 10 provided in the handle stock 2 of the pistol as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, the lug projection 9 passing through the opening 11 to reach the re cess or socket 10 that is formed in the base plate 12 carried by the handle stock. lVhen the trigger guard 6 is in the closed position shown in Figure 1, the end lug 8 carried thereby engages the rearwardly directed lugs 5 projecting from the lower side of thel barrel 3 constituting an interlocking connection therewith for retaining the barrel 3 in tiring position upon the gun frame 1.
To maintain the trigger guard G in its closed position and immovable relative to the handle stock 2, a tensioned latch member cooperating therewith is carried by the handle stock, the latter being provided with a relatively large socket 13 conlining a coil spring 11i engaging the rear end wall of the socket 13 having the opposite or forward end of the spring 11i encloses a stud projectici 15 carried by an angle latch plate 1G pesiticned in the socket 13 through the opening l? in the face plate 12. A latch finger 18 carried by the latch plate 16 projects forwardly of the latch plate as shown in Figures 2 and 4t, and is moved forwardly by the spring llf to position the terminal end of the latch linger 18 in the handle stock recess 10 at a point outwardly of the trigger guard lug 9 as shown in Figure 1 thereby locking the trigger guard in closed position upon the frame of the pistol, To facilitate operation of the latch finger 18, the latch plate 16 carries an angle extension 19 projecting rearwardly from the latch plate and provided upon the outer end thereof with a iinger engaging ring 20.
From the above detailed description of the device, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that when the pistol is in
