L. R. ZIFFERER RECEPTACLE Filed May s, 1923 Patented Sept. 2, 1924.
PATENT' OFFICE.
LOTHAR R. ZIFFERER, F COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RECEPTACLE.
Application led May 3,
To aU wim-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoTHAR R. ZIFFERER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia` in the county of Lancaster' and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved receptacle for garbage, refuse, wastel` etc., of the general kind shown and described in my Patent No. 1,381,390. granted June 14. 1921.
Primarily my invention is concerned with means by which a cover for the receptacle is attached to certain mechanism which operates to raise and lower the cover. Operating means of this character, the details of which are of relative unimportance to this invention, may be formed separately and distinctly from the receptacle itself which I prefer should be loosely positioned within a frame carrying such parts. When operatively positioned, the receptacle is locked against withdrawal from the frame except by first raising the cover, and this may be effected only through use of the cover operating means.
According to this invention, a means is provided for readily'attaching or detach- .ing the cover relative to its operating means so as to permit removal or replacement of the-receptacle. together with its cover, relative to the frame; and also for adjustably connecting the cover to its operating means so as to compensate for any variations in position which the cover may be required to assume because of diierences in height of the receptacle proper.
An embodiment of this invention in its preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 shows in side elevation a receptacle loosely mounted within a frame carrying cover operating parts;
Fig, 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in perspective of the means for connecting the operating parts to the cover; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional'detail taken on line 8-3 of Fio'. 1.
l have s'liown in Fig. 1 a receptacle A mounted upon a frame B which comprises legs 6 supporting a circular base 7 within which the receptacle may be accommodated in any desired rotative position. Upon the receptacle is rested a cover C, and operating means therefor are shown as consisting of 192s. serial No. 636,342.
one or more lugs 8 depending from the base of the frame, andcarrying a pin 9 affording a pivotal mounting for a treadle 10 whose forward end is provided with a pedal 11. A spring 12 may be employed, if desired, to hold the treadle in such relation to the frame that its forward end is normally raised, as shown in the drawing. l
Secured upon the rear side of the 'base is an upright member 14 formed with webs 15 suitably vcurved in conformity with the periphery of the base, and secured thereto as by rivets 16 or in any other suitable manner. The lower end of the upright member which rests'on the floor, thus providing.,r a rear leg for the frame. is formed with spaced side walls 17 between which is extended a pin 18 to afford a pivotal mounting for a bell crank 19 Preferably thisbell crank is formed with companion sides between which is extended a pin 2O at the inner end and a pin 21 at the other or upper end. The pin 20 lies in proximate relation to the rear cnd of the treadle 10 and is adaptedto execute a sliding' movement within a slot 22 formed therein. By means of the construction illustrated, the treadle may actuate the bell crank 19 in such a way as to swing it about the pin 18 as an axis to thereby vary the position of its upper end.
Pivotally connected with the pin 21 at the upper end of the bell crank is a link 28 whose upperend is pivotally connected at, 24 with an offset portion of an arm 25 which is hinged at 31 to the extremity of the upright member 11. Extending rearwardly from the upper end of the arm 25 is a threaded stud 26 on which may be screwed any convenient sort. of thumb or wing nut 2T. Adjacent, the upper end of the hinged arm is the receptacle lcover C having secured thereto a plate 2R from which is extended a downwardly depending arm 29 lying to one side of its peripheral edge. Formed on the depending arm is a slot 30 capable of receiving the stud 26 when the arm isplaced adjacent the movable arm 25. In this relation the parts may be secured with the aid of the nut 27 which serves to clamp the stationary arm of the cover to the movable arm in a desired position of vertical adjustment. Then operatively connected in this manner. the ycover may be lifted by the application of pressure to the pedal 1l which moves its associated parts properly for this purpose,
In the production of rece tacles according to this invention, it is ound advantageous to form all the parts of the frame by a stamping operation. Such a practice ensures uniformity as to size of parts, location of centers, etc. The receptacles are ordinarily produced otherwise, however, and, in consequence, are not at all uniform in dimens'ions, particularly as to height. In such circumstances diiiculties are apt to attend the making of a connection between the cover and its operating means. According to the present construction, however, I am able t0 compensate for such variations as exist by connecting the stationary arm to the movable arm in such an adjusted relation as may be required by the special conditions in each case.
This invention is illustrated and described in particular relation to the cover operating means forming the subject matter of my patent aforesaid, although it is susceptible of other applications. It represents a simple structure by which an adjustable connection may be established or disestablished between the cover and the operating means therefor. The connection so established, moreover, is firm and tight, and does not permit of loose play or wabbling.
I claim:
1. In combination with a receptacle, a cover provided with a downwardly depending arm adjacent its periphery, lifting means for the cover includingan upwardly extending movable arm adapted to lie adjacent the cover arm, and clamping means rigidly securing the two arms together whereby an operative connection is established between the cover and its lifting means, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a receptacle, a cover provided with a downwardly depending arm adjacent its periphery, lifting means .for the cover including an upwardly extendmg movable arm adapted to lie adjacent the cover arm, there being formed` in one of said arms a vertically disposed slot, a bolt extending from the other arm and through the slot, and a nut screwed onto the bolt and adapted to clamp the two arms rigidly in a desired 4position of vertical adjustment whereby an operative connection is established between the cover and its lifting means, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a receptacle, a cover provided with a downwardly de `ending arm adjacent its periphery, lifting means for the cover including an. upwardly extending movable arm adapted to lie adjacent the cover arm, and means for ad justably securing the two arms together whereby an operative connection .is established between the cover and its lifting means, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a rece tacle, a cover, lifting means therefor inc uding a movable part adapted to lie adjacent the cover, and means providing a vertically adjustable and detachable connection between the cover and movable part whereby the lifting means may serve to raise the cover, substantially as described.
5. In combination with a receptacle, a cover, lifting means therefore including a movable part arranged adjacent the cover, and means providing a detachable and ad justable connection between the cover and said movable part whereby an operative connection is established between the cover and its lifting means, substantially as described.
