To all whom @'25 may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. IVM-IL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices to be Used in` Connect-ion with Mechanical Pencils, Fountain Pens, and the like, of which the following is a specificat-ion.

My invention relates to fastening devices, and primarily a fastening device to be used in connection with mechanical pencils, fountain pens and the like.

The primary object of the fastening device hereinafter to be described is to provide means whereby a mechanical pencil or the like may be quickly detached from a chain or ribbon, so that the user may not be hampered by having the cha-in or ribbon dangling from the end of the pencil or the like while using the same.

Further objects, advantages and capabilities will become more readily apparent as the following description proceeds.

While I have shown in t-he drawings my device as attached to a mechanical pencil, I wish the same to be understood as illus trative only, since the invention is equally applicable to other articles such as fountain pens, or the like.

Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 1 indicates a mechanical pencil having any sort of propelling mechanism,

Fixedly mounted in the uppermost portion of the cap 2 is a member 3 pressed to form a well or seat 4: and slotted as at 5 to receive the inturned ends of a coil spring 7, said spring 7 being firmly held in position by expansion against the inner side walls of the cap 2,

Ieciprocally related to the heretofore described member is a detachable member, such as disclosed in Figs. 2 and 5 comprising a circular disc 8 provided with a circumferentially grooved depending projection toform a union member 9.

Covering the member 8 and having its edges swedg'ed around the edges thereof is a cap member 10, said cap member being slightly convex in form "in order topermit the entry of the ends of a curved member 11 into apertures 12 in the top of the cap The ends of the member 11 are forced into the apertures and swedged before the capV member l0 is fixed to the y, circular disc 8.

The operation of the device is as follows:

The union member 9 is forced into the seat or well 4: against the tension of the spring arms in the slots in the sides of the well or seat. VVhpen the circumferential grooves in union member 9 alines with the slots of the seat or well, the arms of the spring 7 through their own elasticity will seat themselves in said grooves, and thus lock the detachable member to the top of the cap 2.

Inasmuch as the operation of the device and the device itself is exceedingly simple, it is thought that more description is unnecessary.

x/Vhile I have shown and described my invention in a certain form, namely in mechanical pencils, I wish it understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent in the U. S. Patent Oilice is 1. In a writing instrument a cap member adapted to be secured to that end of the instrument away from the writing point, said cap member being provided with a circumferentially grooved depending projection, a

plate secured to the end ot the instrument immediately beneath said ca'p member to form a closure for said enol7 a downwardly extend-ing hollow cup-like member on said plate adapted to receive said projection, slots through the opposite Walls of said cup-like member, a spring element extending through each of said slots to engage in said groove and detachably hold said cap member on the end of said Writing instrumen@ and means on said lcap member to receive an attacl'iing element for securing said Writing instrument in position to be quickly available ;t'or use and permit said instrument to be detached from said attaching element While in use. l

'2. ln a' Writing instrument a detachable cap, a plate fixed in one e'nd of said cap to close the same, said plate having a hollovv cup-like member extending into' the interior of said cap, a cap' member mounted above said plate and formed With a circumferentially grooved depending projection adapted to extend into said cup-,like member, resilient means in the latter to detachably hold said projection therein, said cap member being adapted/toleceive a securing element and be readily detached from said cap' while the instrument is in use.

In a Writing instrument a cap, a cap member on said cap, means :for detachably securing said cap member to said cap, and an anchor member in said cap member to receive an attaching element, said detachable securing means permitting said instrument to be readily detached from said attaching element While in use.
