COMBINATION LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELisiin PIERRE RAM- BAUD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In the various types of combination locks at present in use, it has been found neces-' sary to use letters, numbers and like symbols, to indicate the different stages in operating such combination locks, thereby rendering locks of that type absolutely useless, except in natural or artificial lighted spaces. I have provided in my invention a lock of the combination type in which the use of a key is absolutely eliminated and my invention further provides a lock that may as easily be opened in the darkness as well as in'the light, the combination of my lock being indicated by distinct clicks or ticks, produced by the mechanism of the lock while same is being manipulated.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a lock in which the combination can be readily changed to any desired combination of ticks or clicks and at the same time my lock is of a simple and strong construction and one that will not readily get out of order.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, a plate 1 provided with a casing 13 is adapted to be secured within an opening in the front face of the cover of a trunk or chest and is adapted to receive a lock casing 18. formed integrally with a swingable hasp 3. The hasp has pivotal connections at 'i with a securing plate 2 rigidly mounted by means of a headed member 1. A plate 6 is rigidly connected to the upper end of the hasp 3 by means of the lugs 54, 55 and 56 and forms a cover for the lock casing 13 The plate 1 is provided with internal lugs 28, 29, 30 and 31 adapted to be received through the perforations in a securing plate 26 mounted upon the rear face of the front wall of the cover of the trunk.
A semicircular plate 27, shown more particularly in Figure 7, is mountedupon the rear face of the front wall of the body of the trunk and is provided with perforations adapted to receive the inturned lugs-32, 33 and 84c projecting inwardly and through the wall of the trunk from the plate 2 to which the hasp 3 is pivotally connected.
The hasp is provided at its rear face with a spring 10 adapted to engage the outer face of the plate 1 and cause the swingable hasp to be forced outwardly when the lock. has been released.
, A button or operating knob 4.- is mounted on the outer face of the plate 6 and is cup-shaped with a depressed central portion rigidly secured to a shaft 45 so that when the knob is rotated shaft 45 will likewise be rotated together with a washer 21 and a tumbler 17 which are secured to said shaft. The cup-shaped knob 4 has its rim portion provided with a plurality of lateral corrugations or projections designated by the numerals 46 to 53 inclusive.
A plurality of arcuately shaped lugs 35, 36, 37 and 38 project upwardly from the plate 6 and are adapted to receive therebet'ween a circular fiat spring 39 having a lateral projection 39 which is adapted to drop or slide into any one of the corrugations 46 to inclusive when the knob 4 is rotated. The washer 21, pin 45 and depressed central portion of operating knob 4 cooperate with the lugs 35 to 38 inclusive for maintaining the spring in position.
A pin or post 41 is rigidly connected to the center of the bottom portion of the lock casing 13 and has its outer free end abutting the inner free end of the shaft 45 and in longitudinal alinement with said shaft.
Three tumblers 18, 1 9 and 20 are mounted for rotation on the pin 41. Each of these tumblers is provided with a central opening of greater diameter than the diameter of the pin 41 in order to receive respectively a ring such as shown at 4-2, 43 or 44. These rings are rigidly secured to the pin 41 so that the tumblers 18, 19and 20 are rotatable on the centrally disposed rings. \Vasher 22 spaces tumbler 17 from tumbler 18. washer 23 spaces tumbler 18 from tumbler 19, while a washer 24 spaces tumbler 19 from tumbler 20. .Another washer 25 spaces tumbler 20 from the bottom of the casing 13. These washers 22 to 24 inclusive are rigidly secured to thepin 41 and are therefore non-rotatable while the tumblers 17 to 20 inclusive are rotatable.
A lug 46- projecting from the under face of tumbler 17 is adapted to engage a lug 47 on the upper face of tumbler 18, while a lug 48 on the bottom face of tumbler 18 is adapted to engage a lug 49 on the upper face of tumbler 19. A lug 5O on thebottom face of tumbler 19 is adapted to en age a lug 51 on the upper face of tumbler 20. It will be seen that by the rotation of the knob 4 the various coacting lugs 4.6 to 51 inclusive will cause rotation of the tumblers 18, 19 and and 20 through the tumbler 17 and its cooperating lug 46 Each ofthe tumblers 17, 18, 19 and 20 is provided with a V-shaped notch adapted to be alined at predetermined times to receive the end 15 of a resilient keeper 15. The resilent keeper is mounted in the lock casing 13 and is adapted to have the free end 15 always in engagement with the peripheries of the four tumblers by means of the pressure of a pair of springs 14 and 16. The said springs are secured at their ends, as shown at 40, to the casing 13". The tumbler 20 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 20 adjacent its V-shapcd notch which is adapted to engage at t mes the free end 15 of the keeper 1:) for predeterminedly positioning the V-shaped noteh of the tumbler 20.
The bottom of the casing 13 is provided with arcuately shaped slots 8 and 9 and adapted to receive the lock bolts 1] and 12 located at diametrically opposite po nts on the bottom of the tumbler 20. and when moved to the position shown in Figure (3 is adapted to lock the swingahle hasp 3 to the plate 1.
A stop 5 mounted on the plate 6 is adapted to be engaged by the indicator lug 46 of the operating knob at and lim ts the move ment of the knob in either direction.
The operation of my device is as follows:

Any combination may be devised for operating the tumblers 1,7. 18, '19 and 20 for alining the V-shaped notches (30 to said. tumblers whereby the free end 15 of the keeper 15 will fall within the alined notches and ma ntain them in position when the bolts 11 and 12 are released from their respective slots 8 and 9. When the V-shaped notches 60 have been alined the outer curved end of the bolts 11 and 12 are located directly above the slots 8 and 9 so that the bolts may be withdrawn through said slots. The position of the tumblers when the keeper 15 is in engagt ment with the V-shaped notches in said tumblers is shown more iiartieularly in Fig ure 8 when the. lock is in open position. and it is at this time that the spring 10 will force the swingable hasp 3 outward ly from the trunk cover.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A permutation lock comprising in combination, a swingable hasp provided with an integrally formed lock casing, a pin scoured to the bottom of the casing, tumblers rotatably mounted on the pin and provided with interengaging lugs for locking the tumblers for differential rotation. the bottom of the casing being provided with slots, lock bolts on the tumbler adjacent the bottom of the casing adapted to be received by said slots and movable through said slots. and a shaft mounted for rotation in line with the pin, a tumbler rigidly connected to the shaft provided with a lug engageable with a lug on the adjacent tumbler on the pin, a cup-shaped knob secured to'the shaft and provided with a corrugated side wall, a spring mounted in the knob having a projection adapted to be successively engaged by the corrugations for providing clicks, a spring keeper in the lock casing, the tumblers being provided with notches engageable by the spring keeper when the notches are alined by the differential rotation of the tumblers.
2. A permutation lock comprising in combination, a swingable hasp provided with a lock casing at its free end, a pin secured to the bottom of the casing, tumblers rotatably mounted on the pin, a knob mounted for rotation on the top of the lock casing, a shaft rigidly secured to the knob and projecting into the casing, a tumbler rigidly connected with the shaft, cooperating lugs formed on the faces of the tumblers whereby certain of the tumblers are rotated upon rotation of the knob, lock bolts on one of the tumblers adapted to project beyond the bottom of the lock casing, a keeper provided with slots adapted to receive the lock bolts, a resilient means located within the knob adapted to coact with the side walls of the knob for causing clicks upon rotation of the knob whereby the position of the tumblers within the lock casing may be determined for releasing the lock bolts from the keeper.
3. A permutation lock comprising in combination a swingable hasp, a shaft mounted for rotation on the upper end of the hasp, an operating knob secured to the shaft, a tumbler rigidly secured to the shaft for simultaneous rotation of the shaft and knob, a pin rigidly supported in alinement with the shaft, a plurality of tumblers mounted for rotation on the pin, cooperating lugs on the tumblers adapted to have interengagement for causing rotation of the tumblers upon rotation of the knbb, lock bolts connected with one of the tumblers on the pin, a ,keeper plate provided with slots adapted to receive the lock bolts for looking the swingable hasp in position, a resilient means within the knob, and means on the knob engageable with the resilient means for causing clicking sounds for pre determining the position of the various tumblers so that the lock bolts may be released from the keeper and withdrawn through the slots of said keeper.

an operating knob secured to the shaft, a tumbler rigidly secured to the shaft for simultaneous rotation of the shaft and knob, a pin rigidly supported in alinement with the shaft, a plurality of tumblers mounted for rotation on the pin, cooperating lugs on the tumblers adapted to have interengagement for causing rotation of the tumblers upon rotation of the knob, lock bolts connected with one of the tumblers on the pin, a keeper plate provided with slots adapted to receive the lock bolts for locking the swingable hasp in position, a resilient means within the knob, and means on the knob en gageable with the resilient means for causing clicking sounds for predetermining the position of the various tumblers so that the lock bolts may be released from the keeper and withdrawn to the slots of said keeper, a lug on the tumbler carrying the lock bolts, means carried by the swingable hasp adapted to engage the lug for predeterminedly positioning the tumbler carrying the lock bolts, the tumblers being provided with notches adapted to be engaged by the last mentioned means for maintaining the tumblers in position when the swingable hasp has been re leased from the keeper plate.

A permutation lock comprising in com- I bination, a swingable hasp provided with a lock casing, tumblers rotatably mounted in the casing and provided with interengaging lugs for looking the tumblers for difierential rotation, the bottom of the casing being provided with slots, lock bolts on the tumbler adjacent the bottom of the casing adapted to be received by said slots, and movable through said slots, a tumbler mounted for rotation in the casing and provided with a lug engageable with a lug on one of the first mentioned tumblers, an operating knob connected with the first mentioned tumblers and provided with a corrugated side wall, a spring mounted in the knob having a projection adapted to be successfully engaged by the corrugations for providing clicks, a keeper in the lock casing, the tumblers being provided with notches engageable by the keeper when the notches are alined by the differential rotation of the tumbler-s.
