UNITED STATES PATNT QFFICE.
GEORGE W. N. YOST, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRIVING-WHEEL FOR STEAM DRAGS OR PROPELLERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,049, dated June 3, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. WV. N. YosT, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Preventing the Slipping of Wheels on the Ground, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, of which Figure 1 represents a side view of the wheel and frame; Fig. 2, a top View of same, and Fig. 3 a detached part of the wheel showing the angular flanges enlarged.
My invention consists in arranging on the periphery of a driving wheel or wheels used for the conveyance of light or heavy loads a continuous annular right angled flange placed on either side of the felly of the wheel for the purpose of preventing the wheel from slipping on the ground and at the same time capable of being nicely cleared of the adhering earth which with the many forms heretofore introduced has been an utter impossibility or either the mechanism for the accomplishment of this purpose has been impracticable expensive and burdensome.
It will be seen by the following description and reference to the drawings that my arrangement is somewhat the form of the sole of a horses foot and willbury itself into soft earth sufficiently to insure a strong hold for the wheel and prevent it from slipping as hereinafter described.
The periphery of the wheel a is made slight-1y concave and has an angular and continuous flange Z), Z) cast upon either side as shown Figs. 2 and 3. These angular flanges project from the periphery of the wheel the required distance and proportionate to its size and weight. These flanges b, b, have their angles reversed to each other forming a square apartment with a space a, 0 left between them for the reception of a curved clearer or cleaner cl which is firmly secured to the under part of'frame c. This clearer removes the greater mass of adhering earth from the surface of the wheel between the flanges 6, Z) and the rest remaining in the V shaped spaces f, f is removed from the wheel by two fork shaped clearers g, g which are secured to the upper part and in rear of the wheel and are constructed so as to traverse the irregular set of flanges, the spaces between the forks serving as clearers for the periphery of these flanges, and their ends the V shaped spaces 7, f. By this means it will be seen that I can effectually prevent the wheel from slipping and at the same time effect the clearing with great ease and simplicity.
Having thus described my invention I do not claim the combined arrangement, and construction of devices as set forth in the case of Heuermann and Reeves for alleged improvements in grain and grass harvesters as this could not answer my purpose. Neither do I claim the devices described in the case of F. H. Babcock for a similar purose.
What I desire to claim is 1. The combination of the double, angular flanges b b with the surface of a driving wheel for the purposes herein specified.
2. I also claim in combination with the flanges b b the clearers arranged and operating substantially in the manner set forth.
GEO. W. N. YOST.
