To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, BEN Runs, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Anaheim, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latch Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks and more particularly to sliding door locks.
It has been found desirable to provide a lock which while looking a door against access from the outside, yet leaves the lock in condition to be released so that the door can be opened from the inside. Again, by this present invention it is possible to apply a padlock or to look a controlling element from the outside while the door is still open and then a personcan enter the room or shed throughthe open door, close the door and then set a bolt while the outside parts are still locked, the bolt being set from the inside of the closed door.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation and vertical. section looking toward the inside of a door and a contiguous wall having an opening to be closed by the door, and showing the invention partly in section and partly in elevation; the door being substantially closed and the bolt being in set, unlocked position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the lock bolt tripped and fastening the door fully closed.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the door from front to rear and showing the parts all in looking position.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line H of Fig. 3.
The device consists of a keeper 2 suitably fiXed to the jamb 3 of the door frame, the keeper having an upstanding lug 4: at the side of an aperture 5.
Carried on the inside of the door D is a vertically movable bolt or latch 7 guided in bearings 8 and 9; the latch having a handle or lift 10 so that it can be lifted to a position clear of the keeper 2 but with its lower end near the lug 4. The latch or bolt 7 is provided with a shoulder 7 a to be shifted over the edge of the lower guide or hearing 9 so that the bolt 7 will remain clear of the keeper and permit the door D to be opened. lVhen the door is closed, the lower end of the latch or bolt 7 will strike the lug 45 which will push the shoulder 7 of the bear ing 9 and the bolt 7 will shoot down into the aperture 5 in the keeper 2 and will there be locked. On the outside of the door is a fixed shackle eye 11 and close to this is a swinging lever 12 pivoted at 13 in the door. The lever 12 is provided with an aperture adapted to aline with the aperture of the shackle 11 so as to receive the hasp 14: ofthe pad or other lock 15. can be locked to the shackle 11 while the door is open, and the bolt 7' will be elevated while the door is open so that the door can be opened and closed from the inside while the lever 12 is locked. When the lever 12 v is unlocked from the outside by a' person desiring to come in, then the lever can be tilted to the dotted line position, Fig. 2, and will engage, as it'starts upward, the lift arm 10 of the bolt 7 so that the bolt can be lifted from the keeper 2 by a person from the outside of the door.
It will be seen that though the lever 12 may be locked by the padlock outside, any person desiring to pass outwardly through the doorway has but to lift the bolt 7 from the inside to remove it from the keeper 2, and if the bolts shoulder 7 has been deposited on the bearing 9, the bolt will be automatically released when the door is closed and the door will then be locked.
For throwing the bolt 7 in such position as to carry the shoulder 7 into stopping position a spring 15 is provided.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. A locking mechanism including a keeper element adapted to be fastened to one primary part and having a bolt hole and a bolt tripping lug, a bolt adapted to be slidably mounted on another primary part, a support upon which the bolt is slidably mounted and is adapted to be set in a position to be tripped by said lug when engaging the same, and a lockable lever extending through the primary part upon which the bolt is mounted whereby the bolt may be released from the keeper from the The lever 12 r outside, said bolt beingoperable from within when said lever is locked.
2. A locking mechanism including a keeper element adapted to be fastened to one primary part and having a bolt hole and a bolt tripping lug, a bolt adapted to be slidably mounted on another primary part, a support upon which the bolt is slidably mounted and is adapted to be set in a position to be tripped by said lug when engaging the same, and means extending through the primary part upon which the bolt is mounted whereby the bolt may be released from the keeper from the outside, said bolt being adapted to be lifted from the inside of the locked primary parts without operation of said means, and'said means being adapted to be looked against operation.

A locking mechanism including a keeper element adapted to be fastened to one primary part and having a bolt hole and a bolt tripping lug, abolt adapted to be slidably mounted on another primary part, a'support upon which the bolt is slidably mounted and is adapted'to be set in a position to be tripped by said lug when engaging the same, and a lever. extending through the primary part upon which the bolt is mounted whereby the bolt may be released from the keeper from the outside, the bolt being adapted to be Withdrawn from its keeper to unlock the primary parts from one side, and means extending from one side of the bolt whereby it may be retracted from its keeper.
4. A locking mechanism including a keeper element adapted to be fastened to one primary part and having a bolt hole and a bolt tripping lug, a bolt adapted to be slidably mounted on another primary part, a support upon which the bolt is slidably mounted and is adapted to be set in a position to be tripped by said lug when engaging the same, the bolt being adapted to be withdrawn from its keeper to unlock the primary parts from one side, and means extending to the opposite side of the primary parts. whereby the bolt may be retracted from its keepensaid means being adapted to be locked in effective position without preventing the independent operation of the bolt.
5. A locking mechanism including a keeper element adapted to be fastened to oneprimary part and having a bolt tripping lug, a bolt adapted to be slidably mounted on another primary part, a support upon which the bolt is slidably mounted and is adapted to be set in a position to be tripped by said lug when engaging the same, a lockable lever extending through the primary part upon which the bolt is mounted whereby :the bolt may be released from the keeper from the outside.
