Be it known that I, OTTO A. F REDERIGK- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVethersfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Braiding- Machine Yarn Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of the yarn carriers provided for use in rotary braiding machines of the type in which there are a plurality of radially arranged inner yarn carriers that are revolved rapidly in one direction and a plurality of annularly arranged outer yarn carriers that are revolved rapidly in the opposite direction, the yarn from .the outer carriers beingv raised and lowered as the carriers are revolved so as to pass over and under the yarns from the inner carriers and form the braid at the center ofthe machine. A machine of this class is illustrated in Patent #1,331,672 to Anker Petersen, February 4L, 1920.
In the prior machines of this character the inner ends of the inner yarn carriers have been supported by rolls that run on a track, either fixed or rotatable, and the outer ends of these carriers have been supported by rolls that are arranged on vertical arbors and run in a groove formed in the inner wall of the rotary drum that conveys the outer yarn carriers, which wall is provided at intervals with vertical slots for the passage of the yarns from the outer carriers. As the inner yarn carriers are revolved rapidly in one direction and the wall of the drum which carries the outer yarn carriers is revolved rapidly in ther opposite direction, the resultant speed between the wall of the drum and the rolls on the outer ends of the inner carriers is high. @wing to the high speed and the outward pressure incident to the centriff ugal action of the inner carriers these rolls and their arbors which cannot, on account of the environment, be eiiiciently lubricated,
wear out very quickly and because of the lint gathered from the yarns they rolls soon stick and when they cease rotating they quickly wear flat. In order to reduce wear and noise it has been considered necessary to make the slots in the drum wall through which the outer yarns pass, and over which slotsthe rolls run, as narrow as possible, a factor which produces undue wear on the yarns, increases the amount of lint gathered from the yarns and obstructs the free'passage of knots made when the yarns break or the yarns run out and a new supply is attached.
The object of the present invention is to provide a construction for the inner yarn carriers of a machine ofthis character which will operate at a high speed more smoothly andwith less noise and wear, than the prior constructions, and which will avoid hammering of the parts as the slots are passed by the inner carriers, and at the same time will permit the slots in the drum for the passage of the yarns from the outercarriers to be made wider thus lreducing` friction and wear on the yarns and permitting the free feed of such knots as are necessary to make in the outer yarns.
This end is attained in a very simple manner by removing the supporting rolls and their vertical arbors from the outer ends of the inner carriers and providingv in place thereof shoes or flanges which will travel in the supporting groove in the wall of the drum and sustain the weight of the outer ends of the carriers, with comparatively little wear and no hammering as they pass the yarn slots. These shoes are suiiiciently long to ensure stability to and freedom from vibration of the inner carriers as they are revolved, and the yarn slots in the drum wall may be as wide as desirable to permit the free passing of the outer yarns and all knots through the-m.
In the accompanying` drawings Figure 1 shows a plan with portions broken away, of a few yarn carriers and the supporting and operating parts of a braiding machine of the type mentioned, the inner carriers being constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of the parts of the machine shown in 1. Fig. 3 shows a detail of the outer end of one of the inner yarn carriers illustrating the relation of the shoe to the inner wall of the drum and a yarn slot therethrough, Fig. 4l shows in elevation the slotted wall of the drum and indicates the position of a yarn carrier back of the slot.
In the type of machine illustrated the in ner bobbins, cops or tubes 6, which comprise braided or twisted cotton, linen or silk yarn wound upon cores 7, are placed in the inner los carriers 8. These carriers are frame-like and they are arranged radially in the machine. In a braiding machine of the type provided with a drum having an annular groove formed in its inner surface to open inwardly and having vertical slots formed in itswalls in intersecting relation with said groove to provide passages for the outer yarns, and constructed to support inner yarn carriers adjacent their inner and outer ends respectively to operate in a horizontal plane; inner yarn carriers for supporting yarn masses with their axes extending in a horizontal direction radially of the drum, and a shoe projecting from the outer end of each of said carriers and formed as a flat plate extending from its carriersin a horizontal plane containing the longitudinal axis of the yarn mass to enter the groove by movement radially of the drum and constructed to span the vertical slots and slide smoothly over them as the carriers are forced outwardly by centrifugal force while traveling in their circular path.
3. In a high-speed braiding machine, the combination of a revolving drum having an annular groove formed in its inner face to open inwardly and the depressed wall of the groove formed as a thrust bearing surface, said drum having vertical slots formed through its walls so that they intersect the annular groove and provide passages of sufficient width to permit yarn to run freely therethrough and be reciprocated therein without fraying, inner yarn carriers arranged in a horizontal plane and supporting yarn masses with their axes extending radially of the drum, a race-way for supporting the inner end of said yarn carriers, a shoe on each of the carriers formed as a flat plate extending from the carriers into the groove in a horizontal plane containing the longitudinal axis of the yarn mass and having a curved face constructed to slide against said thrust bearing surface and span the vertical slots to slide smoothly over them under the outward pressure of centrifugal force, and means for advancing the carriers around their circular path.

In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolving drum supporting outer yarn supplies and having a vertical wall, the inner surface of which has formed therein an annular groove of less depth than the thickness of said wall, said drum having vertical slots formed through its walls so that they intersect the annular groove and provide passages of suliicient Width to permit yarn torun freely therethrough and be reciprocated therein without fraying, inner yarn carriers arranged in a horizontal plane and supporting yarn masses with their axes extending radially of the drum, a race-way for supporting the inner end of said carriers, rollers upon the carriers engaging the race-way, a shoe on each of the carriers formed as a flat plate extending from the carriers into the groove in a horizontal plane containing the longitudinal axis of the yarn mass and constructed to span the vertical slots and slide smoothly over them under the outward pressure of centrifugal force, and rotating drivers for traveling the inner yarn carriers.
6. In a braiding machine, the combination of a revolving drum having an annular groove formed in its inner face to open inwardly and having relatively wide vertical slots formed through'its walls in intersecting relation with the groove to provide passages of suiicient width to permit yarn to run freely therethrough without chaiing, inner yarn carriers arranged in a horizontal plane and supporting yarn masses with their axes extending radially of the drum, a raceway for supporting the inner end of said carriers, a shoe on each carrier formed as a long flat plate rounded at its ends and extending from the carrier in the horizontal plane of the axis of the yarn mass and having a marginal side that enters said groove to provide a long curved bearing that conforms to and slides against the curved rear wall of the groove to span the vertical slots and slide smoothly over vthem under the outward pressure of centrifugal force, and means for advancing the carriers around their circular path.
