HAT-SUPPORTING HOOK.
Application filed May 4, 1923. Serial No. 636,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSWALD PETSCHEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved I-IatSupporting Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports and it pertains more particularly to a hat supporting device.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide means adapted for attachment to a hat, or other article of wearing apparel, tosupport the same when not in use.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the hook in such a manner that the same is readily portable and capable of being carried upon the person.
It is a still further object of the invention to construct the hat supporting hook in such a manner that it is particularly adapted for use in connection with the backs of seats in auditoriiuns and other public places. 7
The present invention is particularly adapted for use by a person in a theatre, auditorium, or the like, and serves means whereby he may support a hat from the back of the seat immediately in front of the one which he is occupying.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawin s, in which *igure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the hat supporting hook is used;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, part ly in section, of the hook in use;
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings,the hook comprises a body portion 5, one end of which is curved as at 6 to one side of the body portion. The opposite end of the hook is curved as at 7 and has its extremity inwardly bent, as at 8.
The hook 6 heretofore mentioned occupies a position upon one side of the longitudinal axis of the body portion, while the hook 7 occupies a position upon the 0pposite side of the longitudinal aXis of the body portion. Pivotally connected to the body portion 5 of the hook, by means of a hollow rivet 9, is a swinging lock member 10. This locking member 10 has its lower end formed with a right-angular extension 11.
In use the brim of the hat is adapted to be inserted between the locking member 10 and the curved portion 12 of the member 7, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2.
In order to position the hat brim as described the locking member 10 is swung about the hollow rivet 9, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3. After this has been done and the hat brim is positioned as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2, the looking member 10 is again moved into parallelism with the body portion 5 to retain the hat brim in position.
After the hook has thus been attached to the hat, the hook portion 6 is engaged with the top edge of the chair 13, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, having its end tapered as at 14 to provide a reduced end in order that a bight may be had upon the chair to retain the hook in place thereon.
When it is desired to remove the hat, it is only necessary to disengage the hook 6 with the chair, swing the locking member 10 about its pivotal point until the hat brim can be disengaged with the member 7, thus disassociating the hat and hook.
While in the present instance a hollow rivet 9 has been shown and described, it is obvious that a solid rivet may be used in lieu thereof, if desired. i
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a portable device for supporting hats or other articles of apparel. Furthermore, the invention provides a device of this character which may be readily attached to and removed from the article which it is intended tosupport.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A hook comprising a body portion having its ends curved and occupying positions on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said body portion, a laterally swinging locking member pivotally connected to the body portion and bridging one of the curved ends of the body portion, and a right angular extension formed on said locking member.
2 A supporting hook comprising a body portion having one of its ends curved and '5 occupying a position on one side of the longitudinal axis of said body portion, the opposite end of the body portion being curved and occupying a position upon the opposite side of the longitudinal axis of said body portion and laterally swinging means 1 pivotally connected to the body portion and adapted to close the second-mentioned curved end as and for the purpose set forth.
