IMPROVEMENT IN BLlN-SLAT HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. igg, dated April 21, 1874 application filed April 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA H. SMITH, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blind-Slat Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to adjust readily the slats of a window-blind 5 and it consists mainly in the employment of a holder attached to the frame of the blind, provided with both a stationary or xed clamping surface, and also with a yielding and adjustable one, by means of which a rod, suitably attached to the slats, is so held that it may be readily moved into any desired position to adjust the slats, and remain xed in that position until again moved by the hand, as will be fully described hereinafter. y
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent partial elevations of blinds having my invention applied thereto, and Figs. 3 and 4 detail views of the holding devices.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents a blind having the slats a a a united by the tielrod b in the usual wellknown manner. c represents a suitable rod, connected at' one end either to the tie-rod b, as shown in Fig. 1, or to one of the slats a, as shown in Fig. 2, and held at the other, by the holding device D, upon the blind-frame.
The holding device shown in Figs. 1 and 4 diers slightly in construction from that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and will rst be described.
d represents a holding-block adapted in any proper manner to be attached to a blind-frame, and having a central threaded socket and a transverse slot or opening, e, at one end, which latter is cut down obliquely upon each side to allow the rod proper play, as shown in Fig. 4. j' represents a pin adapted to close the upper part of the slot, and prevent the rod c from slipping out of the holder. g represents a setscrew adapted to turn in the threaded socket of the holder, and h a rubber block or other suitable spring located-in the socket at the end of the set-screw.
The operation is as follows: The end of the v rod cbeing placed in the transverse slot of the holder, the rubber block is caused to bear against it with the proper pressure by means of the set-screw g, the rod being thus clamped between the end of the holder and the rubber block,as shown in Fig. 4. When thus held, it will be understood that it may be readily moved into any desired position to adjust the slats, the friction of the parts, if properly adjusted, not being sucient to prevent this movement, but that it will remain fixed in any position in which it may be placed.
If desired, a metal washer of suitable form may be interposed between the spring h and the rod c.
The modification shown in Fig. 2 is constructed as follows: The holding-block d is provided with a central opening and recess, as shown in Fig. 3. represents a threaded bolt, having the nut j, and k represents a spring surrounding the bolt, which rests in the central recess of the holder, as shown. The rod in this case is slotted, and is held between the end of the holder and the head of the bolt by the action of the spring k, the pressure 0f which is regulated by adjusting the nut.
The device described is exceedingly simple in its construction, and Lvet well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed. vIt may, of course be constructed of any proper material, and of suitable size.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a blind-Slat holder, the combination of the independent xed clamping-surface d, attached to the main frame, the independent yielding clamping-surface c', moving upon the fixed surface, and the intermediate connecting-rod c, vertically sliding between the two surfaces, the parts d i being adapted to clamp the rod e with a yielding pressure, as described.
2. The blind-Slat holder described, consist ing of the holdin g-block d, having the central threaded opening and transverse slot, the setscrew g, and rubber block `orother suitable spring h, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose described.
