P. BAGDON MINER S DRILL Filed Aug. 22, 1-922 ATTORNEY.
Petente do 24, 1924.-
PETER BAGDON, OF KINCAID, ILLINOIS.
immnnzs DRILL.
Application med August 22, 1922. Serial in. 583,566.
To all whom it may comer n.
Be it known that 1, PETER BAGDON, a citizen of Lithuania, residing at Kincaid, county of Christian, and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Drills, of which the following is-a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boring machines or drills for coal, rock and other similar substances, and particularly improvements in the drill tool and its holder.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a drill holder .adapted to exchangeably hold a plurality of drills.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a drill of peculiar shape which will positively and effectively cut coal and rocks or the like.
A further object of the invention is the.
provision of a drill equipped with means for protecting the means for holding the drill tool in its holder.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of my invention,
Figure l is a front view of a drill holder and drills constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof.
Figure 3 is a rearview of drill holder and drills.
Figure 4: is a cross-section on line 1- 1 of Figure 3. v
Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the drills, and
Figure 6 is a detail View of another of the drills.
The drill holder 10 is at one end provided with a socket 11 for attachment to the lower end of the shaft of a drilling machine or the like by means of fastening means passed through the holes 12 and 13 respectively.
The front face of the holder 10 is provided with a V-shaped depression 14 having beveled, undercut side walls adapted to be engaged by the outer and upper beveled edges of the drill tools.
These tools are illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 and ar designated 15 and 16 respectively, and have a substantially prismatic shape showing triangular rear ends 17 18 and beveled front ends 19 and 20. The tool 16 has a sharp chisel-like front edge 21,
- while with the tool 15, this edge is notched,
as at 22. A block 23 with beveled side faces which are adapted to engage the inner beveled side faces of the tools 15' and 16 is arranged in depression 14, and is held in place by means of a bolt 24 provided with a head 25 resting upon the upper face of block 23.
The opposite end of bolt 24 is screw threaded and carries a nut 26 adapted to hold parts 23, 15 and 16 in their adjusted positions. On the rear face of holder 10 a protecting fin 27 is secured as shown in Figure 3.
The operation ofthe device will be quite clear from the foregoing description without further explanation.
It will be clear that changes may be made in the general arrangement and construction of the minor details of my invention without deviating from the scope and spirit of my invention.
What ,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-.
A tool holder'for miners drills, comprising a socketed body, having a depression formed in one face, the side walls of the depression being divergent toward the forward end of the body and being undercut, a block adapted to interfit with adjacent sides of two drills to hold said drills in the undercut portions of the side walls of the depression, a bolt for securing the block to the body, and a nut engaging said bolt on the rear surface of the body, said body being formed with a fin extending d1agonally across the body and serving to protect the nut in the use of th tool. 4
-In testimony whereof I have aed my signature.
PETER BAGDON.
