Description

8 5.. W. STURDEVANT STEW CUP COVER Filed Dec. 5, 1921 Patented June 24, 1924,
BURTON W. 'STURDEVANT, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
STEXV-CUP COVER.
Application filed December 5, 1921. Serial No. 519,837.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURTON WT STURDE- VANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of ()hio, have made an Invention Appertaining to a Stew-Cup Cover; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to stew cups or pans, and has for its object the provision of a cover for such articles, which cover is pro vided with drainage openings and has a lid member for normally closing such openings, with such member hingedly secured to the cover in a simple, ellicient and inexpensive manner, whereby to facilitate the manufacture and assembling of the parts.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous torms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top perspective view of a stew cup embodying the invention, with the lid member in open position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the lid member closed, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a stew cup having a handle 2 projecting from a side thereof and having its top closed by a cover 3, which preferably seats down in the upper portion of the cup on a shoulder 4.
The cover 3 is retained in seating relation in.
the cup by a pair of lugs 5 disposed in the rim portion of the cup at opposite sides of its axis and in position to engage over the edge with a notch or recess 6, which, when moved into register with one of the lugs 5, enables the cover to be removed from the cup, as well understood in the art.
The cover is provided near one edge with a plurality of drainage openings 7, a portion of such openings at least are disposed in an annular depression or trough portion 8 of the cover so as to enable water which may lodge or accumulate on the top of the cover to drain back through the openings into the cup.
The drainage openings 7 are normally closed by an auxiliary cover 9, which conforms in shape to the portion of the cover over which it is intended to seat and is hingedly connected at its inner end to the cover in a manner to obviate the use of rivets or other similar securing means. For this purpose the cover 9 is provided at its inner edge with a hinge tongue 10, which is bent inwardly and then extends outwardly in a curve so that the tongue is of substantially U-shape in cross-section and adapted to extend through a slot 11 in the cover and have hooked engagement with the marginal edge portion of the slot wall to permit a limited pivotal movement of the auxiliary cover with respect to the cover and at the same time retain it in engagement therewith.
The tongue 10'is inserted into the slot 11 before bending its terminal end outward.
It is apparent that the tongue 10 is formed on the auxiliary cover integral therewith and that the laterally extending body portion thereof which projects through the opening 11 forms means which co-acts with a wall of the opening to limit the motion of the auxiliary cover within an acute angle, and that the U-shaped portion of the tongue is so bent after assembling as to preclude removal of said cover.
It is evident that I have provided a simple and efficient means for securing a lid member to the cover and that it enables the parts to be easily and rapidly assembled without the use of rivets.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination with a cover for stew cups or the like having drainage openings near its side edge and a slot between the openings and cover center, of an auxiliary cover for normally seating on the main cover over the drainage openings to close the same and having a laterally projecting tongue on an edge thereof integral therewith extending through said slot, said tongue having its free end terminating in a U- shaped portion which is bent, after assembly with the main cover, to form a hinged connection between the main and auxiliary covers and to preclude removal of one from the other, the body portion of said tongue formne ates ing means which co-acts with a wall of the slot to limit the motion of the auxiliary cover within an acute angle relative to the 10 main cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification.
BURTON W. STURDEVANT.
