Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN PHILIP SHTNDLER, a subject 01"? the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door locking devices, of the kind known as combination locks, and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this nature which is of simple, strong, and practical construction, capable of a wide range of difi'erent combinations and easily manipulated by theone having knowledge of its operation while at the same time it may w th great facility be rendered temporarily 1noperative so as to be incapable ofuse by any unauthorized person to open any door to which it is applied.
I attain this object by the construction llustrated in the accompanying drawings 1n which- Fig. 1 is a side view of the knob and spindle of the lock, in outside elevation.

The spring is seated in the slot 24: and is provided at mid length with a short flattened portion 27 apertured as at 28, being extended on one side of this portion in U-shaped form, as at 29, while on its opposite side it is first curved outwardly, as at 30, then reversely bent into U form, as at 31, and then doubled over. as at 32, being finally carried along horizontally as at 33 for a short distance inwardly in the same plane as the fiattened portion 27, and within the space 34 formed by the doubled over portion 32 is inserted a small coil spring 35.
36 indicates a square sided plug adapted to engage slidably the square recess 15 in the end of the spindle 3 and also the recess 26 in the cap, which plug is provided in its outer end with a threaded hole 37 into which is secured a screw 38 passed through the aperture 28 of the portion 27 of the spring 25 and thus connect the spring and the plug together. From oneside of the plug extends a square section arm 39 which is bent inwardly at right angles to form an extension member or arm 4'10 which arm 40 projects through a slotted aperture 41 formed in the part 2 and is laterally movable therein, this arm being threaded on its outer end as at 43 and provided with a button '44, which is screwed on to the thread 13 exteriorly of the part 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 45 indicates a notch formed in the member 40 intermediate its length in which the free end of the U-shaped portion 29 of the spring 25 is engaged when the device is assembled.

The thickness of the discs is such that when placed in the recess, with a thin washer between each of them, as indicated by the numeral 53 in Figs. 2 and 3, to reduce friction between the discs, the outermost disc does not project out of the recess, and a side pressure is maintained on the edge of the discs by means of a small leaf spring 54 seated in a recess 55 cut in the wall of the recess 6 and secured at one end as at 56, this spring being in the form of three spring fingers 71, 72, and 73, as shown in Fig. 9 each bearing on one disc so that a pressure is assured on all the discs.
The outer periphery of the extension 7 is graduated at its outer end as indicated by the numeral 57, the graduations being preferably in the form of lines representing different numbers, one line indicating the number 1, two lines 2, three lines 3 and so on and between the respective numbers are formed small knobs 58, the purpose of which is to assist in forming'the operating combination in the dark by the feel of the knobs.
Th graduation marks are read in conjunction with a central mark 59 on the escutcheon plate, indicated by the numeral 60 in F ig. 13. Any other graduated ar-- rangeinent may be used, however, as may be desired.
The locking device may be used with any form of look, a preferred form being that indicated in Fig. 13, in which 61 indicates the locking bolt slidable in a tube 62 insertible into a hole 63 bored in the edge of the door, which bolt is provided with a jaw 641 in which is seated for partial rotation a pawl 65 engageable when turned in either direction with a right angle lug 66 formed on the jaw to retract the bolt, the pawl being operated by the spindle 3 which extends through it from side to side of the door and on the inside of the door the spindles is fitted with an ordinary door knob 67 while on its outer side the combina tion locking knob described in the foregoing is fitted. The bolt 61 is projected by means of a spring 68 extending between a shoulder 69 on the bolt and a shoulder 70 on the tube 62 respectively.
The manner in which the combination locking device is assembled and its operation may be briefly described. The parts being disassembled, to put them together the part 2 is placed on the spindle 3 so that the barrel 10 and ball races 11 and 12 are seated in the enlarged bore 9, the square portion of the spindle then extending freely through the bore 8 and the end portion of the barrel 10 carrying the key 16 projecting into the recess 6. The combination discs 50 are then placed in the recess one on the other with a washer 53 between each of them and it will be seen that the end of the barrel 10 also projects through the assembled discs and that the key 16will con tact with one or other ofthe projections whenturncd in either direction. The spring 25 is attached to the plug 36 by the screw 38 and the free end of the spring portion 29 is seated in the notch -15 of the arm 40, the spring and plug being then placed in the cap slot 2st and recess 26, as also is the follower 46 the pin 47 of which. is inserted through the hole 48 of the cap, this. pin being disposed under the horizontal portion 33 of the spring 25 which exerts a spring pressure on the pin, this spring pressure being assisted by the small coil spring 34-, which is under compression when in place. The cap is now placed on the part 2 and secured to 'it by the screws 5,and, referring now. to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the arm 40 is disposed in the slotted aperture 41 and that the plug 36 is resting on the end of the spindle on one side of the recess 15 its arm 40 being clear of the combination disc notches .51, consequently the spring 25 is under compression tending to force the plug downwardlywhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and as just described. It should be noted here'that the length of the recess 26 in the cap is such as will permitlateral :movement therein of the plug 36 and follower 46 sufficient to bring the plug into alignment with the recess 15 and that the spring 25, while tending to force the plug downwardly also tends to move both it and the follower laterally in either direction according as the combination is arranged or disarranged.
It has already been stated that the combi nation discs are under a slight side pressure due to the spring 54,but this pressure is not sufficient to prevent free turning of the knob when hand pressure is exerted thereon suflicient to overcome that of the spring 5-1 and thus when the arrangement of the parts is as shown in Fig. 2 the knob maybe rotated freely without actuating the spindle, thus giving the impression to anyone attempting toopen thedoor without authority and with out knowledge of the operation that the lock is broken or out oforder, the discs in that event being held stationary by the engagement of their projections 52 with the key 16 while the part 2 moves around them.
The side pressure on the discs due to spring 54, however, is such that when the knob is partially rotated slowly, as when making the combination, the discs will move with the part 2 and thus, if the discs are arranged so that it is known that, the knob being turned first in one direction, a projection 52 of the first disc will contact with the key 16 when the graduation 3 is aligned with the mark 59 on the escutcheon plate, that a projection 52 of thesecond disc will contact with the key 16 when the graduation .6 registers with the mark 59 the knob being eration of the turned in the opposite direction, and that a projection 52 of the third disc will contact with the key when the graduation 1 registers with the mark 59, then to use a combination of 361 the knob is first turned to 3, then back to 6, and back again to 1. When this is done the slots of one set of outer peripheral slots 51 in the discs are in registration one with the other and with the aperture 41 so that the arm 40 is moved thereinto under v the influence of the side action of the spring 25 thus bringing the plug 36 directly into is necessary is to press the arm 10 inwardly by the fingers to disengage the plug 36 from the recess 15, whereupon it is moved out of alignment with the recess by the spring 25 and held out of engagement therewith until the combination is again made as described in the foregoing, the knob being spun a few times to throw the disc slotsout of registration.
Different combinations may be made by rearranging the discs differently so as to allow more or less travel of the key between the respective disc projections and also by changing thekey 16 from the slot 17 to the 30 degree slot 18 but it is not necessary to describe this in detail as the action and opouter part detachably connected together,

knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner and outer parts having a concentric annular recess and a transverse slot in their inner faces respectively, a plurality of discs mounted in said annular recess in frictional contact with. the wall thereof each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted recessed in its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a key carried by said spindle with which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches arerbrought into alignment one with the other, a plug carried by the outer part slot engageable in the spindle recess on the aligning of the disc notches, and means for disengaging the plug from the recess. I
3. A door locking device comprising, a
knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner and outer parts having a concentric annular recess and a transverse slot in their inner faces respectively and the inner part having a slotted aperture on one side of the annular" recess, a plurality of discs "mounted in the said annular recess in fr1ctional contact with the wall thereof each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted recessed in its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a key carried by said spindle with which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches are brought into alignment'one with the other and with the inner part slotted aperture, a plug carried in the outer part slot out of alignment with the spindle recess having an arm extending through the slotted aperture of the inner part, and spring means for effecting the engagement of the said arm and said plug in the disc notches and spindle recess respectively on the aligning of the notches one with the other and with the said slotted aperture.
4. A door locking device comprising, a
knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner and outer parts having a concentric annular recess and a transverseslot in their inner faces respectively and the inner part having a slottedaperture on one side of the annular recess, a plurality of discs mounted in the said annular recess in frictional contact with the wall thereof each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted recessed in its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a key carried by said spindle with which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches are brought into alignment one with the other and with the inner part slotted aperture, a plug carried in the outer part slot out of alignment with the spindle recess having an arm extending through the inner part slotted aperture, and spring means for effecting the engagement of the said arm and said plug in the disc notches and spindle recess respectively on the aligning of the notches one with the other and with the said slotted aperture, said spring means being adapted to move the plug out of alignment with the spindle recess on its disengagement therefrom under inward pressure on the plug arm.

A door locking device comprising, a knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner part and said outer part having a concentric annular recess and a transverse slot in their inner faces respectively, and the inner part having a slotted aperture on one side of the annular recess, a plurality of discs mounted in the said annular recess in frictional contact with the wall thereof each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted recessed in its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a'key carried by said spindle. with which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches are brought intoalignment one with the other and with the slotted aperture of the inner part, a plug carried in the outer part slot out of alignment with the spindle recess having an arm extending through the inner part slotted aperture, spring means for effecting the engagement of said arm and said plug in the disc notches and spindle recess re spectively on the aligning of thenotches one with the other and with the slotted aperture, said spring means being adapted to move the'plug out of alignment with the spindle recesson its disengagement there'- from under inward pressure on the plug arm, and a follower member abutting the plug movable with the latter as it is moved into or out of alignment with the spindle recess.

A door locking device comprising, a knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner and outer parts having a concentric annular recess and a transverse slot in their inner faces respectively and the inner part having a slotted aperture on one Side of the annular recess, a plurality of discs mounted in the said annular recess in frictional contact with the wall thereof each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted recessed in its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a key carried by said spindle with which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches are brought into alignment one with the other and with the slotted aperture of the inner part, a plug carried in the outer part slot out of alignment with the spindle recess having an arm extending through the inner part slotted aperture, said arm having a notch inter mediate its length, a follower member abutting the plug seated in the outer part slot having an arm extending slidably through the outer part wall, and a spring disposed in the outer part slot secured at midlength to the plug having on one side a substantially U-shaped portion the free end of which. is engaged in the said arm notch while on its other side it is designed to press on the follower arm, said spring being adapted to effect the engagement of the plug arm and plug in the disc notches and the spindle recess respectively on the aligning of the notches one with the other. and with the slotted aperture and to move the plug out of alignment with the spindle recess on its disengagement therefrom under inward pressure on the plug arm.

A door locking device comprising, a knob divided into an inner part and an outer part detachably connected together, said inner and outer parts having a concentric annular recess and a transverse slot in their inner faces respectively, a plurality of discs mounted in said recess each having an outer peripheral notch and a plurality of unequally spaced inner peripheral projections, spring fingers secured to the wall of the recess bearing on the peripheries of the discs there being one finger for each disc whereby they are maintained in frictional contact with the recess wall, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted re cessed at its inner end and extending at its inner end through said annular recess and said discs, a key carried by said spindle with" which predetermined disc projections contact when the knob is moved in opposite directions alternately whereby the disc notches are brought into alignment one with the other, a plug carried b the outer part slot engageable in the spindle recess on the aligning of the disc notches, and means for disengaging the plug from the recess.
8. A door locking device comprising, a knob, a spindle on which said knob is freely and rotatably mounted, means within the knob for engaging the knob and spindle so as to operate together, and combination means within the knob controlling such engagement, said means being in frictional contact with the knob and only operative to effect the combination on partial rotation of the knob under pressure insufiicient to overcome said frictional contact.
9. A door locking device comp-rising, a knob, a spindle on which said knob is freely and rotatably mounted, means within the knob for engaging the knob and spindle so as to operate together, combination means within the knob controlling such engagement, said means being in frictional contact with the knob and only operative to effect the combination on partial rotation of the knob under pressure insufficient to overcome said frictional contact, and means for indicating the required amount of such partial rotation.

A door locking device comprising, a knob, a spindle on which said knob is rotatably mounted, and combination-con trolled means within the knob for operative-' ly connectingit to the spindle including a key removably seated in the spindle capable of being transposed from a longitudinal position on the spindle to an angular one whereby the range of possible combination changes is amplified.
