BASE FOR TOY TELEEHONES.

Be it known that I, CLIFFORD M. WATROUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Toy Telephones, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby anyone skilled in the art may make and use the same.
The invention relates to toy telephones and is particularly'directed to the base portion of such a toy.
A toy telephone of the character lllustrated in'the drawings is shown and described. in my Patent No. 1,419, 902,-dated June 13, 1922, and the base hereinafter described is applicable to such a toy.
The object of the invention is to provide a resilient base which may be cheaplyand economically manufactured and applied to a toy. It presents a finished appearanceto thebase and covers all sharp edges wlnch are liable to mar or scratch polished surfaces of tables and the like, when used by. children.

Such atoy must, of necessity,be manufac-, tured at a low cost and therefore'the parts are made up from stampings or spun metal.
While the surfaces may be highly finished to make an attractive toy, the edges of the stamped up parts are more or lessuneven and rough and require special finishing.

Children, of course, when using a toy of this character move it about upon the tables and other articles of furniture, and if there are any sharp edges upon the base they will,
of course, mar and deface the polished surfaces. v

In the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1, there is illustrated a toy telephone such as described in'my co-pending application.
It is not necessary herein to describe the -particular gong striking mechanism and other elements, as the base is applicable to variousforms of toy devices of the charac' ter indicated.
Numeral 1, denotes a base which is pref- 'erably'stamped or spun up from sheet metal and has surmounting it, a standard 2, which 1n turn sup orts a transmitter element 3,
and mouthpiece 4. The standard 2, also has clamped to it a gong 5, and its mechanism.
The mechanism is actuated by a receiver hook lever 6, within which may be held a toy receiver 7. A replica of the usual connectlons, from the base 1, to the receiver 7, 18 secured by a cord 8.
These parts make up the general elements of receivln and transmitting telephone sets.
The resillent base, as illustrated in Fig. ures 1, and 2, consists of a fabric or other resilient material 9, which covers a plate 10. The plate 10, has an upwardly extended flange 11, said plate being preferably formed from. drawn up sheet metal.
