A. L. SWANK LOCKING MEANS' FOR NAME PLATES Filed Oct. 1, 1923 Patented ay 27, 1924.
ARTHUR L. SWANK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN. i
LOCKING MEANS FOR NAME PLATES.
Application filed October 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. SWANK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the' county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Means for Name Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to securing devices for plates and refers more partic ularly to means for securing name plates and the like to radiator shells of motor vehicles.
An object of the invention is to provide a radiator shell having means for engaging a projection upon a suitable name plate to secure the latter to the shell.
Another object is to provide simple and effective means for positioning the name plate properly upon the radiator shell when applied thereto.
Another object is to provide a strong and durable construction which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
"With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a radiator shell and showing the name plate embodying my invention attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the radiator shell showing parts broken away and showing the name plate secured thereto;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4: is a sectional view through a portion of a radiator shell before the name plate is attached;
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the name plate and cup-shaped member secured thereto.
In these views, the numeral 1 designates a name plate that is adapted to be secured to a suitable support such as a radiator shell 2 of a motor vehicle. The name plate may be constructed of any suitable material and is preferably provided upon its front face with some name, letter, emblem or design.
For positioning the name plate properly 1923. Serial No. 665,863.
upon the radiator shell when applied thereto, the front plate 3 of the shell is preferably provided with a circular opening 4. that is adapted to receive a cup-shaped member 5 which has a flat base 6 secured centrally upon the back of the name plate and which also is provided at its outer open end with a laterally extending annular flange 7 that is adapted to slidably engage an 1nturned annular flange 8 surrounding the opening 4 in the radiator shell.
For securing the name plate to the radiator shell the annular flange 8 is preferably slotted at spaced points as shown at 9 to provide a plurality of lugs 10 which are preferably reduced in length by some suitable means so as to extend substantially half way of the slots and which are bentinwardly slightly as shown in Figure 4;.
When the cup-shaped member 5 is moved by the name plate into the opening in the shell, the lugs 10 will bemoved outwardly by the flange 7 of the cup member 3, but as soon as the flange 7 passes beyond the free ends of the lugs they will spring back to their initial inwardly inclined positions to engage the rear side of the flan e 7. Thus, the name plate will be held in rm engagement with the radiator shell.
What I claim as my invention is 2- 1. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening therein, of a name plate having a projection adapted to be inserted into the opening, lugs upon the shell adapted to spring into engagement with the projection when inserted within the opening for securing the plate to the shell, and means between the lugs engageable with said projection for positioning said plate upon said shell.
2. The combination with a support having an opening therein, of a name plate, and means for securing the name plate to the support, said means including a flange 0n the shell marginal to the opening, a member secured to the back of the name plate and having a flange conforming in shape to the shape of the opening in the support, and lugs projecting inwardly from the first mentioned flange and adapted to spring between the last-mentioned flange and plate to secure the latter to the support.
3. The combination with a support having an opening therein, of a name plate, and means for securing the name plate to the support, said means including a flange extending around the opening, a cup-shaped member secured to the back of the name plate and having an annular flange, the first-mentioned flange having recesses therein at spaced points, and inwardly inclined lugs projecting from the recesses, said annular flange being adapted to be moved through said opening beyond the ends of the lugs whereby the latter may be moved between said annular flange and the back of said plate for securing the latter to the sup port.
4. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening therein," of a name plate,
means for securine the name plate to the support, said means including a cup-shaped member secured to the back of the name plate and having a flange, lugs projecting from the shell adapted to spring between the flange and name plate when the cupshaped member is moved through the opening in the shell, and projections on the shell between the lugs engageable with the flange aforesaid for positioning the name plate upon the shell.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ARTHUR L. swarm.
