EXCAVATING BUCKET WITH ATTACHED 1P.
Application filed January T all whom itmay concern:
- Be it known that I, DONALD H. YOUNG, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and 5 State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Excavating Buckets with Attached Lips, of which It has heretofore been proposed to realize the. above-named conditions by'providing 0 the lip with a continuous flange in position to overlie the inner face of the forward margin of the bucket from end to end of the lip, and thereby resist separation ofthe lip by the spreading of its ends: and having a 7 short flangespaced from the continuous flan e in position to overlie the outer, face of the ucket along the intermediate portion of its said margin to resist displacement of the lip by the effect of earth penetration. But
9 this construction is objectionable because of the excess of nietal employed, and because of the necessity of fitting the margin of the bucket between two flanges.
It has also been proposed. to attach the lip through the medium of three short flanges,
namely, an intermediate flange seated upon the outer face of the bucket, and two end flanges seated upon the inner face of the bucket, but this construction is objectionable to because of the liability of the lip to fracture at the points ofreduced transverse dimension between its flanges.
Now, the present invention insures all the securityv of a continuous flange and of the 46 combined inner and outer seating of the lip,

by offsetting the end portions of said flange from the intermediate portion thereof so that while the intermediate portion overlies an intermediate outer face of the forward margin of the bucket, the end portions of a, 1922. Serial No. 526,507.
the continuous flange overlie the inner side faces thereof; and by recessing said forward margin of the bucket, between said intermediate and side faces,-so that it will admit the offset portions of the flange and so avoid the necessity of interrupting its continuity. This integral continuity of the flange of the lip insures maximum strength and durability, this arrangement offering the possibility of placing the notches or recesses in the bucket member where there is less likelihood of fracture because of the sturdier bucket construction and the relatively protected position of the same.

1 represents the lip, and 2 the bowl of an excavating bucket, such, for instance, as one adapted to enter as a unit into an end less chain of'buckets usedfor dredging purposes.
Lip 1 is constructed with an attaching flange 3, 3*, made continuous from end to end, and of which thepart 3 is adapted to seat upon the external face of the intermediate portion 4 of the front margin of the bowl- 2, while the end portions 3 arejoined to the portion 3 of the flange by offsets 5 which cause said end portions to be presented in position to'overlie'inner faces of the side portions 6 of said bowl. 1
Finally, the side portions 6 of the bowl are separated from the intermediate portion 4: thereof by recesses 7 extending inwardly from the front edge of the bowl a distance sufficient to admit the offsets 5 that join the portions '3 and 3 and thus permit the latter to reach their respective seats upon the outer and inner faces of the bowl, without interrupting con inuity of the flange 3, 3, of ma- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lip tion to the sides thereof without offset, and

ilarly, the rearward limit of the seat 4 will be defined by a shoulder 9 upon thebowl, which will-receive the rearward thrust of the intermediate portion of the lip result ing from earth penetration. lfn this way, rivets 10 securing the lip at its intermediate portion, and rivets ll securing its ends, will be materially relieved of shearing stresses.
ll claim:
1. An excavating bucket lip having a continuous attaching flange constructed with seating portions positioned to lie. respectively, upon the inner surface and the outer surface of the margin of a bucket, and with offset flange portions intermediate of and integrally uniting said seating portions.
2. An excavating bucket lip having a continuous attaching flange comprising an in termediate sea-ting portion positioned to lie upon one surface of a bucket portion, two
. end seating portions positioned, relatively to said intermediate seating portion, so that they will lie on the opposite surface of such margin, and two offsetting flange portions integrally uniting said intermediate seating portion with the respective end seating portions.
3. In combination, an excavating bucket having alip-receiving margin constructed with recesses extending rearwardly from its forward edge and completely through it. and a lip having a continuous attaching flange adapted to seat upon said margin: said attaching flange comprising an intermediate attaching portion seating upon one surface of said margin, end attaching portions seating upon the opposite surface of,v
said margin, and offset flange portions occupying said recesses and integrally uniting the intermediate attaching portionwith the respective end attaching portions.
4. An excavating bucket, comprising a bowl having a lip-seat upon one face of the intermediate portion of its forward margin and recesses extending through its said margin. at either end of said seat, and a lip having an attaching flange adapted to said seat, with offsets extending through said recesses. and with attaching ends beyond said offsets lying against the face of the bowl opposite to that of said seat.
5. The combination in an excavating bucket, of a bowl having a lip-seat on the imargin of said bowl having a continuous attaching flange comprising an intermediate portion fitting said seat, offsetting portions extending through said recesses, and attaching ends overlying said attaching faces.

In an excavating bucket, a'bowl having an exterior intermediate lip seat, interior lip seats lateral thereto, and recesses separating said seats; and a lip having a continuous attaching flange through which it is secured to said bowl and which comprises an intermediate seating portion, two end-seating portions, and offsets joining the end por tions and intermediate portion in positions adapting them to overlie, respectively, the inner and outer seats of the bowl; said lip having a body portion that forms in relation to its said flange a shoulder that abuts rearwardly against the bowl.
